- This week Kevin is building a new hoop coop for our ducks and giving the chicken hoop coop some upgrades. We need to keep the animals safe and this should do the trick!

Would love an update on how these hoop coops worked through the winter.
Hey Kimberly! Not sure if they made a video on that or not, but when I had built these in past, I tacked up tarp over the higher open places too with zip ties, and then just took it down afterwards, and we had snow and everything and ours did fine in there, with their body heat it was nice and toasty. Only thing I would do different after that winter, lol was for winter get the coop near an electric outlet, and buy that water heater thingy that Carolina Coops uses in their big water drums...and feed that in and have the big water thing in the coop/warm enough to not freeze b/c our hoses/nozzles/their waters were freezing every morning and carrying out gallons of water from the house everyday to fill the waterers with got old real quick! Then would just do deep bed method in that hoop coop til snow/cold passes enough, shovel it out into compost when done and move coop after snow part of winter passes. :)
We were in zone 8 though so if Colder....instead of tarp, maybe could try sheet metal or plywood? I dunno if it lasted super long if the tarp would've been good enough for the chickens but the ducks, they were good.
@@learninladyhomesteader9374 They did make a video wherein they inserted plywood panels to cover the higher open spaces during the colder months. They think of solutions long before I even know there might be a problem.
This may sound weird, but when I get overwhelmed with things I have to do and learn, I just come back and watch another one of your videos... does not matter when the video was made, it is still a treasure watching you guys working your homestead. Love you guys!!

I used to have a little farm in Drury... we'd go to Ava often because we were within 30 min of Mountain Grove, Ava & West Plains.. nice area! we homesteaded there for about 6 years... a long time ago. Love your videos.

Love that the plywood is inside the door! No opening the door to chicken yuck within the frame, when they smoosh into the door while yelling to be let out in the morning. Can you guess how I know this? haha Clever use of materials, all around. Really loved the latch fix/grace space idea in previous video too.

I really like your hoop coops. Wish our tiny property was bigger so I could do those. We only have 50X100' space including what the old mobile home we live in sets on so limited space, but do meat rabbits, chickens and garden. I did put up cattle panel arched trellises this year for the first time to extend some growing area to vertical. Prayed for you Sarah this morning for the Lord's hand in your healing and for you to be sure to take it easy long enough. Have a great day and thanks for always sharing what you do. I've watched many styles of coop builds and I have everything I need (except the vinal)I'm doing it this weekend.
Your Black silkies are so cute. Silkies go broody often, great sitters. I had a variety of them, I also had Polish. They are not heavy layers but fun to have, they are quirky.

This looks great. I built one with just 2 cattle panels also. We put the covering on, then put chicken wire over it. Also made a window like door in the back so we could retrieve the eggs without having to enter the coop.

Loved the video you are a kind and loving man looking after your wife and family the way you do Coops are great well done all. Carol
Robbie and Gary simple gardening uses tulle fabric wrapped around things to keep out rodents etc. It might help you around the legs of the next boxes. She also uses it to cover veggies when young and birds want to eat them, helps with bugs too. Like moths wanting to lay eggs on tomatoes etch.

I did see the silkies. I had 2 white, 1 buff and a black hen. And a black rooster we called dad. He took care of all the chicks and he didn't crow, he opened his beak and made the most awful screech. Once we got used to it, it was really amusing. We had a couple of extra roosters we put in the freezer. Don't bother everything about them is black and tastes horrible. You should get some frizzles, they're great fun! I miss my mini farm. I love your videos, it takes me back.

Looks great!. I have to say I love how you roll. Yes animals don't care what tge things look like, only that they are fed and safe. My husband and I are the same,,the things have to function,,pretty can come later, once we have a better sense of what is working and whether it is worth putting more time and money into the project,,, with full time jobs, kids and other commitments,,, many times it is not worth the extra energy.

Your second homestead seems to be working out beautifully for you. Kevin it seems whatever you are faced with you just get to work and find a way to get things done. Sarah you look so rested I am glad you are taking care of yourself. Mama always takes care of everyone but I learned the hard way after surgery that sometimes others need to take care of Mama. I have had a sever deer problem for many years and have rarely eaten a tomatoes from my garden. Well, that stops now. The hoop coop/green house I just built will prevent the deer out of my garden. Thanks for the idea. too, late for this year but it will be a greenhouse next year and a garden protector.

We tried ducks , but they are so messy and a lot of work , they always trash there water and soak everything , i had to get rid of them but i didn't want to because the eggs are so much better than chicken eggs IMO!
Man, you made those roosts far too easy. It's like you have been doing this for a while or something. Bird row will be a sight to see some day.

I love the simplicity and affordability of the hoop coops. I wonder though what keeps predators from digging under to get get at the chickens or ducks?

Seeing you put straw into the duck coop got me wondering whether the previous owners of your new property used Grazon or other persistent herbicides on their hayfields. I got straw for my duck bedding from a different local farm, starting in fall 2018, not realizing that their fields had been sprayed, as has apparently become a common practice. We put the used straw on our vegetable garden as usual and into our compost pile. Our tomatoes started showing herbicide damage later last summer. I thought we had some kind of disease process. This spring, we put more straw on our garden. We planted our tomato starts and within a month, after the first big rain, every plant started showing herbicide damage (deformed, curled, leathery leaves and stunted growth). The horticulturist at our local garden center told us it was herbicide damage. Our beans are also affected. Nightshades, carrots, beans and a few other plant families are most severely affected.
Grazon and other persistent herbicides pass through the digestive systems of cattle and other animals without being broken down and hay, straw or the manure of animals fed on them contain the herbicide. It will eventually break down in compost or soil, but not in the time people usually use for composting. Grazon is not supposed to be used on fields that will be producing feed for animals whose manure will be composted for use in vegetable gardening or for direct use in gardening as a mulch. My garden is suffering and I will have to take remedial actions before I can grow tomatoes successfully again. I think it is a question worth asking about your new property, given that you have a barn full of hay cut from those fields. If it was sprayed with a persistent herbicide, that will limit what you can use it for.
Deep South Homestead has a couple of videos telling about the Grazon damage to their vegetable greenhouse. I think someone should go on worldwide TV & tell the world the problem Grazon has caused homesteaders? I'm not a homesteader just a TH-camr & learning 88 years old.
Was told by DSH that you should plant sunflowers in the soil as it will rid the Grazon?????? It was said that Japan planted sunflowers on their land after their disaster???? I do not know if that is a fact!

@@analarson2920 The grazon helps to keep the weeds killed or a low amount so the hay isn't full of weeds . It's awful for the animals and composting and therefore on your garden. It gets into the soil and ruins your plants. I've heard some homesteaders are having to find some people to get their hay from that doesn't use the grazon. I hear it's hard to do because so many use it. The homesteaders buy the hay from people and don't realize they're using the grazon on their fields and then feed it to their cattle and then they compost the manure and then the compost is mixed into their soil. Therefore ruins their plants.

It is to " improve " the pasture by killing weeds and other rough growth that the cattle will not eat. The cattle will eat only the sweet grass which leaves the rough growth and weeds to thrive. It is the modern man's way of doing things.
You see , the pastures could be improved by having cattle such as the Scottish Highland cattle. They are much closer to being wild cattle. And they WILL eat the weeds and other rough growth. They are also browsers much like goats. So the Highland cattle will also eat brush and brambles. The Highland cattle also produce a superior , prime beef. ( The queen of the U.K. has her own herd of Highland cattle and specify's that she will eat no other kind of beef .)
There is one problem with all of this. The Highland cattle are slow growing. And the modern farmer wants what ? Fast growing modern cattle that also will grow larger. Fast ! They will not eat the weeds and other rough growth so............
It's all about money. The buying public will buy the inferior beef , the modern beef cow will grow larger and will grow faster , so the pasture and hay fields are sprayed with herbicides
which cost money so they must be persistent and long lasting. And around and around we go. Slowly harming ourselves for the sake of profits. GMO crops are for the same reasons.

I just saw the article on you and your homestead in the latest issue of the electric cooperative's Rural Missouri publication. I'm born and raised in Lincoln County in E. Central MO. I went to school at what is now Mo State in Springfield. Our #1 son is a 'sort of' neighbor to you. He and his wife live near Nixa.
