  • So close to the finish line! I get the top end of the mill put back together and fire it up on the bench for the first time, in spite of an interesting new quirk I discovered about static phase converters.

    Extremely helpful. I'm working on a mill that came with the head already apart and just a bucket of parts. Suffice to say that some of the stuff has left me scratching my head, and this cleared some things up for me. Thanks!

    when putting the belt back on the motor I Always struggle with this on our machine, the belt is so damn tight even though Ive got the adjustable speed all the way adjusted to give me the most play in the belt. I thought I was re assembling it wrong but you do it the same way I do lol.

      Ive got to take ours apart again, we've got an issue with the low gear, machine locks right up when the low is engaged.

      There's a snap ring on the one shaft with the drive dogs. Mine came off and did the same thing.
      But I also need to take it apart again. I'm getting a ticking noise. Could be the lift mechanism on the front pulley or the plastic bushing. I just replaced the bushing, so hoping it's an easy fix.

      @@MyLilMule I just ours back together yesterday after finally every issue resolved with this one. The last maintenance guy for the facility didn't take care of it too well

    another helpful video, especially for those looking to acquire an older 3phase milling machine. have you considered using a variable frequency drive (vfd) to run 3ph from single phase to your mill? i've been having great success with the huanyang inverters.

      I did consider it, but I also have a K&T horizontal mill with a 3ph motor in it. I also have plans to add additional 3ph equipment. Having multiple VFDs just didn't seem like the right choice for me. Plus, with the variable speed head, I wouldn't take advantage of many of the functions in the VFD.

      I think there's interest. My channel is still rather small and doesn't get a lot of attention. Occasionally, something gets recommended by the TH-cam algorithm, but it's rare. By likes and comments help a LOT.

      About $1,000 USD in parts, plus another $500 for the motor repair. In hindsight, I could have repaired the motor myself and saved $250 in labor costs.

      @@MyLilMuleIt was a good deal since I saw the ways where still in good shape. Total cost for your Bridgeport was $2,100. Smart. I hope you can make a video based on the tolerance you're achieving now. Bridgeport usually holds 0.0004" tenths to 0.002" thou tolerances. The spindle runout is around 0.0005" tenths.

      @@ShopperPlug The spindle on this is in great shape. The table and X feed screw have wear in them. $2,100 is not a lot for a Bridgeport, but it was more than I really wanted to spend, mostly to stay in a budget, but some of the parts are VERY expensive.

    Have you thought about the "phase conversion" problem when the machine is functioning under good load? Single phasing that motor would not be good in my experience, unless I misunderstood what you were driving at. Not faulting, just concerned. Thanks for the look.

      No worries. Essentially, that's what a static phase converter does. It charges a capacitor to feed the third leg of the motor, but then it can't persist that and shuts off. It's only powering the third leg long enough to get the motor spinning - a kick start of sorts. But once it starts spinning, it can keep running on just the other 2 legs, just under reduced power. The problem I am having here, is that at high RPM when the motor is at maximum load (free spinning), the third leg doesn't stay energized long enough to get it spinning fast enough, where it can stay running with just the other two. So, yes, it boils down to running it on single phase power without rewiring or remotoring (is that a word? It is now!) the machine. Long term solution will be to get a rotary phase converter and have "real" 3 phase power all the time. Probably sooner rather than later.
