  • This is a brief overview of heat pump thermostat wiring. Always refer to your instructions when wiring up a system to ensure you are wiring to the manufactures requirements. This video is intended to help you understand how basic heat pump systems are wired.
    ***YOU MAY SPLIT UP THE W1-W2-AND W3 TO STAGE ON THE BACKUP STRIP HEAT. AS LONG AS YOU HAVE A 3-4 STAGE THERMOSTAT.

    Thanks for your notes on the wiring of the heat pumps especially as it relates to train. discovered that the reason my heat pump(Trane) hasn't been switching properly is because the installer wired it wrong years ago! rewired it by your instructions and now everything works better than ever!

    Just a note for others watching this video. Bosch heat pumps use 'B' and not 'O'. In other words, you energize the Reversing valve for HEAT and not COOL. Also I think the Bosch heat pumps use 'W' for an Aux heat call back to the air handler. Thanks for the video.

    Thank you so much for a well explanation. I don't understand some systems Y from thermostat only connected to condenser Y outside but it's not connected to the air handler. But most heat pump systems thermostat Y connected to air handler and to the condenser. Why is that not connected the same?

    • @hvacmillionaire
      @hvacmillionaire  ปีที่แล้ว

      Y is a call for compressor. In a heat pump Y is energized with a call for heat AND with a call for cool. With a totally electric system the thermostat brings the air handler fan on for heat and cool. With a gas furnace, the board brings the fan on for heat and the thermostat still brings the fan on for cool. Y basically goes from the stat straight to the outdoor unit on both systems even if it uses a board (Y) to tie the stat wire to the outdoor control wire. So Y is the same in both systems. Sometimes there’s no terminal at the indoor unit for Y because there really doesn’t need to be one. Hope that makes sense. Just think of it like this, Y has one job which is to signal the outdoor unit to comes on. G and Y are basically the same terminal at the stat on a heat pump. Whenever there’s a call for heat or cool the indoor fan is energized at the same time.

    I hade to put back on the mercury 4 bulb thermostat and all functions work fine. Didn’t work with pro 4 thermostat.
    Is there another TState you recommend
    The mercury Thermostat was a heat pump system control Carrier since you said fault there is a Red LED bulb on that mercury thermostat.

      Keep in mind that just because they need to be "spoon fed" doesn't mean they aren't interested, or can't understand. (Though, to be fair, some aren't, and can't.) People learn differently, and different things are easier for different folks. For example, electricity has never been intuitive to me, but I can understand anatomy and physiology quite well. I'm sure you have time constraints at work. But as a trainer, you have a great opportunity to get creative. Try explaining it differently, or find other resources to help you make it clear. Sometimes, it just takes some different perspective. I guarantee that if your trainees are the kind of people who are putting forth an effort to learn, they'll appreciate your efforts. Peace!

When I upgraded my thermostat to the Honeywell T5 wi-fi thermostat, I have switched the Blue wire from B (American Standard) to the C terminal of Honeywell T5, the unit did come on but the heat instantly blowing even I turned the Cool mode on. • @danpmatz

    B is never common
    C is always common
    B is when your equipment uses the reversing valve for heat and o is when your equipment uses Reversing valve for ac.
    Some manufacturers use reversing valve for heat.Some use it for a c.
    Most of them use 0= the reversing valve for a c.
    On your outdoor heat pump you will have a w1 That will send power back to your heat on when it is defrosting.

    Do all heat pumps have aux heat?

    • @hvacmillionaire
      @hvacmillionaire  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Most do. With a heat pump once the outdoor air gets below 25-30 degrees there's not much heat left in the air for the refrigerant to absorb. Once that happens the house temp. will begin to drop. The thermostat recognizes that and a second stage gets energized which is the signal to energize the back up heat (typically strip heat- heating elements)

      Some stats have an s1 and s2 which is for an outdoor sensor. If that’s not what it is then see what color the wire is and then find that same wire at the air handler or heat pump abs see what terminal it’s going to.

      @hvacmillionaire  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      If there's an RC and RH terminal in the stat they probably have a jumper wire between them. If not install a jumper wire. Very old systems used 2 transformers. One in the outdoor unit and one at the indoor unit. I haven't seen one of those in many years. Most have been replaced at this point. You would only use Rc by itself if you were working on a 2 transformer system. I have no idea what you're talking about on the 24 V DC. ??

    Quick question. I am installing a Rheem heat pump unit. I Have "brown" for common. So what is the purpose of the "Blue" wire. For I do not have a blue on Air handler nor on the nest thermostat.

    • @hvacmillionaire
      @hvacmillionaire  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      The blue wire is "B" which is the reversing valve. On Rheem it is energized in heat mode. The thermostat has to be heat pump capable and there should be a setting in the installer configuration to change the reversing valve from "O" to "B".

    • @hvacmillionaire
      @hvacmillionaire  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      At the air handler the "b" from the stat will just tie to "B" going to the heat pump. No need for a terminal. the stat will energize the reversing valve when needed (when stat is in heat mode)
