This Tiny Arcade TMNT is junk! You heard that's right, folks. Jon is not happy with this Super Impulse Tiny Arcade unit. With talks of TMNT Shredder's Revenge on the horizon, we decided to give this little unit a test drive. Unfortunately, we were very disappointed.

This could be a port of a flip phone game. I've played a few and they will map jump buttons to 7 and 9 to avoid making you mash 8 and 4 or 6 for side scrolling games. It would also explain the vertical screen.
That's an intriguing theory. That still leaves the puzzle of the joystick input, though.
I tried following up on this through some searching and didn't find anything to confirm it. I kept getting results for smartphone apps.
I’m a game archivist and this is indeed a late era Java title however some work was done to it that menu is not in the original game
I hope the new “Shredder’s Revenge” game has the original arcade game as an extra

Thinking the same thing. Galaga ran extremely choppy. They likely used the same cpu in these little things and hoped nostalgia for TMNT would overcome the shoddy game play. I just can't believe a higher up saw this in action and thought it was a legit good product to release.

Yeah I'm confused by it... I've seen other reviews on it where they could change who you play as, but my version of the game is the same as his where you can only play as Donatello! (Mind you they all apparently play exactly the same)
Also in my version you can adjust the settings (Volume exc) where as you can't in the other instead being able to pick a different Turtle... 🐢
Ether way it might be impressive for what it is... But a gold dusted turd still smells like shit...

I'm glad I watched this. I recently put this one on my wishlist because I'm a huge TMNT fan and loved the original arcade game. I'm loving my Frogger Tiny Arcade, but I think I'll skip TMNT.
That would be well-advised. If you're just trying to complete a collection that's one thing, but for playing? Meh.

I'm not satisfied with this tiny arcade because I can't barely see my combos when I'm fighting the 20 bad guys at the same time.

I remember seeing this at a walmart thinking its pretty neat that they put the entire tmnt arcade game into this little device (at least i thought it was the full game when i first saw it), and then i hit the try me button.. holy crap, does this game look like an old 2005 java game for flip phones. and seeing you suffer from its jank made me glad that i never tried to buy it.

You get what you pay for. If you don't want a big 1up version, and the countercade and first run of TMNT from 2019 has a remixed turtles theme song in the first game. The Turtles in Time 5 ft version has the original song in the first game, all the 1up versions have both games. Get the upcoming Numskull versions of both games. The cabinets are arcade accurate and the first game has the original song. They are $300 each from the Konami shop and other retailers on their site. They ship in December. They are 17.5" tall, and 9" wide and deep. Controllers can be plugged into ports behind the coin doors which open.

Yikes, that was an overreach indeed, great review. That’s $20 better spent or invested towards a nicer mini arcade product. Speaking of which, I recently ordered my first Numskull quarter arcade cab, can’t wait to get it!
Another fault to this is that the game only plays as Donatello. Granted, the other turtle sprites are in the cutscenes but Donatello is the only playable turtle. No option to play as the others.

This was my first Tiny Arcade. My girlfriend got it for me because I was making my arcade cabinet and doing something different. I liked that it lit up and had a light up marquee but the gameplay is just horrible.
Aww, sorry this was your first experience with the Tiny Arcade. If you like the size, I can tell you that the other fixed-screen games that came out before are substantially more playable than this TMNT.

3:28 the moon 🤣. this video was hilarious 5:00 foot clan ambush! you should do a full playthrough it would be comedy gold. like, spy hunter, i think they get the game right for these mini/tiny arcades it shouldn't be so much about gameplay (nes) on those cramped up controls it should be more about the presentation and novelty hopefully with arcade graphics (or close to) which they've accomplished. the speed sucks i agree also horrible sound effects

I was hoping My Arcade would release a micro arcade edition of the TMNT original arcade ROM. I'd probably buy that.
I wanna like this game. I bought it but after seeing the gameplay, it will definitely remain in the box. I don't like how the sprite of the turtle don't line up when it switches from walking to attacking. And the lack of invincibility timers from being attacked or respawning aren't there either which causes a near insta-death.
The version here is so unplayable that it's more of a "remember this game?" than it is "play this game!"
I thought it was a fun Christmas decoration.
I've seen one at Target when I got the my arcade space invaders machine.

My Arcade or Basic fun should make their own mini arcade machine.
Nickelodeon bought the Ninja Turtles IP completely, so all TMNT merchandise is licensed by Nick.

As a collector myself, I review a lot of titles across all the manufacturers you mentioned.
Whatever happened to that Tomb Raider Tiny Arcade that they showed off a year ago? Seeing how this one came out I can't imagine it being any good, but I was really wondering what it was going to be like.
I don't have any insider information, but I have heard that the Pac-Man Hello Kitty replaced Tomb Raider in the release schedule.

Semi-related, considering they're already partnering with Square Enix/Taito I wonder why they haven't worked on a Bubble Bobble Tiny Arcade yet.
I reviewed this and the pinball game a few months back and I agree with you that it’s not very playable. I also didn’t like that you can only play as Donatello. The pinball isn’t much better but it’s more playable than this
And it's too bad, Jimmy. I like where they're going, though, and am excited to see what the next wave brings.

This version of TMNT is more difficult than the arcade version. LOL

Ad someone who spent dozens of dollars on the original, it never had unlimited lives. You may have encountered it on freeplay where you had unlimited credits.
Vertical form factor- er, why? The arcade game used a horizontal screen (had to make room for four players, right?).
Left and right attacks- again, why? Did the developers play Double Dragon 2 the day before? Since they were basing this on the arcade game they should have left the controls alone (for the record, I prefer the controls on the original Double Dragon over its sequel).

That’s atrocious. I appreciate the effort but if it can’t fit on a Tiny Arcade then probably don’t put it on one? I dunno I mean I know they’re thinking novelty here. But we also have mini arcades that are very playable so this can’t fit in that category. Good look at this.
I guess it's the kind of impulse (ha!) purchase that you buy because of the packaging & promise of nostalgia, but for $20, how many people would bother returning it? Any? That's exactly why I think reviews like this are so critical. Be armed with knowledge BEFORE you drop that green, yo! 😆
Thanks for this excellent review, Jon, from one Jon to another. I was wondering what the Tiny Arcade TMNT game would be like, particularly since I had never played any TMNT games before.
I agree that the design looks awesome and it was an ambitious attempt, but the game does fall short in terms of its lag time and being overwhelmed with bad guys to eliminate.
I'm not a diehard gamer by any means and I bought eight other Tiny Arcade games (Pac-Man, Ms. Pac-Man, Frogger, Space Invaders, Galaxian, Galaga, Qbert, and Pole Position) for the sake of nostalgia and to be entertained for five to ten minutes at any given time, so I can see that TMNT will not satisfy serious gamers, particularly if they can only get past a few levels and they'll get sick of the gameplay shortcomings in no time flat. Still, at the right price, it will look cool on a shelf with the other Tiny Arcade units.

I don't want to buy one of these things just to experiment, but... I wonder what happens if you "Track&Field" the two jump buttons (press them alternately and very rapidly); do you just keep climbing up the wall? And then if you land and "Track&Field" the two attack buttons to slay the resulting huge crowd of Foot Clan enemies... (seems like the joystick is mostly superfluous, heh heh heh)
Too bad this one was a flop. The Arcade game was so much fun. I remember long lines waiting to play it.
It was a regular part of my daily routine in college. After lunch at the canteen, I'd walk across the student center to the bowling alley where they had a small arcade and TMNT was there.

Hey, chaTTSer. Despite this one being disappointing, I hope they do keep pushing the envelope. With incremental improvements in the internals, something like what SI was trying to achieve here should get easier to pull off well going forward, and that's exciting. @GenXGrownUp I think it is secondary they are made to be playable. What I do see them being used is if someone wanted to created a toy model arcade display. The units fit in there. Some people collect model trains. Other people build Christmas town displays for the holidays. For a retro gamer, a mini arcade display seems a natural. They do scream "cute". One gets to build a dream arcade without taking up all the space.
You may want to investigate this to see if it is actually a thing.

Your point is taken, but I feel your position is a bit dismissive and short-sighted. Regardless of the cost, there are hundreds of products vying for that money, so reviews help consumers to make informed purchasing decisions on product segments in which they have an interest, but also have a finite budget.
