It’s a small detail, but whenever jinx says “make her go away” I think because she sees Caitlyn as a monster, and she wants vi to “make the monsters go away” like she did when they were children.

Your point about Mylo and Claggor being representative of Jinx's negative and positive self talk made me think of the sizes of the dolls. She went to the trouble of making a full-sized Mylo but Claggor is just a small plushie. I think that represents how much more power those negative thoughts (Mylo) have over her psyche than the positive (Claggor).

I don't think that Claggor is particularly positive influence on Powder/Jinx, though. From the little that we saw of them, Claggor was mostly a passive presence from her perspective, he didn't bully her but also didn't defend her like Vi. He was just there. And that's why his doll is little, he didn't have a great impact on Jinx beyond her guilt of causing his death.

It's interesting to me that nobody seems to have noticed that Jinx paints her fingernails both blue and pink. She clearly never let go of her sister. In fact, when she uses Vi's Atlas Gauntlets to drop the silver platter on the dinner table in episode 9, you can see that she painted the fingernails of the gauntlets blue and pink as well. It will be interesting to see if she continues to hang on to Vi this way in season 2 now that she has ostensibly fully embraced the Jinx identity and completely shed any remnants of Powder within her. And if she does continue to do so, would that mean that she still harbors a tiny shred of Powder somewhere deep inside?

That would be nice to see, but current Jinx, has black painted fingernails. I noticed as I was watching the show and was wondering if the stuff and lore (back story of champoins) matched up. The only trace of her childhood still having effect on her, is what she says and the fact that her mini-gun is named Pow-Pow. The childhood nickname Vi have her. And she's always taunting the gun and saying 'she's such a cry baby'.
Arcane is set in the past, so I think Jinx considerably let's go of her attachments. But even then, she's always pranking Vi to get her attention, so there's that 🤔. (My source is from the League of Legends lore 😊)

I also want to say that Jinx's negative self talk and PTSD definitely takes away from the fact that Jinx understands what's in the notebook. The notebook of the master engineer who studied in school for years. Jinx didn't receive an education, but she was still able to understand the contents of the notebook. Jinx is incredibly smart and intuitive and probably has an incredibly high IQ. Makes you wonder what she could've done with her life if she was raised like Caitlin or Jace.

18:05 Another thing that happens during the reunion scene is that Vi tells Jinx that she got arrested and Jinx says "Marcus?!" in response, realizing that it was Marcus who took her sister away from her, which is most certainly why she kills Marcus shortly after that. In episode 9 when Silco talks about how the late sheriff "had his uses", Sevika responds by saying: "Too bad Jinx didn't think so". Killing Marcus was very much NOT on Silco's agenda but from Jinx' perspective, Marcus took her sister away, and she was going to make him pay for that sooner or later.

That's a cool little nugget. I do think she cared about who she killed. Every enforcer (beside Caitlin) and Marcus died , Caitlin and ekko came away relatively ok so I think jinx was extremely selective with who was targeted.

I disagreed with Jinx in the finale, when she said that Silco thinks he created Jinx but in reality it was Vi...I think it was Mylo. Not exclusively, of course, but of any individual person whose interactions caused damage to her, I think it's clear that Mylo had the most impact.
Her recollections that cause her torment and trauma arent showing shades of Vi, or Claggor. They almost exclusively show Mylo. Even the things that don't make much logical sense to tie to Mylo, like her fear of abandonment, he is still there. He made her feel so awful about aspects of herself that everything she hates about herself, she subconsciously represents as Mylo. More than anyone else, Mylo made Jinx (and not just the name).
It's interesting (and juicy in a dramatic way) that we start to see a shift toward Caitlyn being demonized more in her head as she convinces herself Vi replaced Powder with Caitlyn. She had no issue sharing affection as a child, but then again considering what she's gone through and the fact that her fear of abandonment had spent years being honed like a razor blade by Silco, I probably shouldn't be surprised at how quickly she would villainize a perceived threat.
    Also, LOVE THE OUTFIT!

Mylo is the entirely negative voice in her head. He never had anything positive to say to her, so it's no surprise that he's the voice of her negative talk. Vi is a mixed voice. Both the positive enforcement that kept her going. And the face of her abandonment issues. Vi is a much more important figure to her, but I think that for a while she was trying to hide Vi away, because she was too painful to deal with. She had Vi's doll closed off in a box with the flare. As a symbol of hope that she was scared to try for. While Mylo and Claggor's dolls were out in the open. Vi is much more of an influence on her than Mylo is. Mylo is the voice of all her negativity and doubt. Vi is family and hope and abandonment.

    • @Orapac4142
      @Orapac4142 2 ปีที่แล้ว +65

Dont forget, thats just how she sees the birth of Jinx, and shes not exactly in a great spot. Honestly I think it was a mixture of all 3 in different ways. Mylos part in it was his constant belittling of her to become the cruel voices always poking at her. Vis part was, as she said, the part that helped her keep going and picking her up when was down and all that. But Silcos part? It wasnt to do his "hard won lessons" at all, but the fact that he enabled and encouraged violent tendencies, fed into her abandonment issues because of his own issues and his projection onto her, turning her into a child soldier and really making her a darker parody of powder, turning her from a (relatively) well meaning child inventor to the monstrous one she is now.
I also think its sort of telling she doesnt outwardly say Mylo or Silco had a role to play for a couple reasons. For Mylo, its because she doesnt want to give him credit or power over her. For Silco, I think its because she doesnt want to blame him for something she knows her sister wouldnt like. But when shes saying Vi did it, shes trying to phrase the whole becoming Jinx thing and Vis role as something good; she helped her survive the undercity even when she was gone, helped her see the colours in life, kept her safe still.

The fact the Mylo and Clagger were there with her kinda shows in that moment she was putting EVERYTHING she was out there to try to find Vi. @Raven_Black_252 2 ปีที่แล้ว +281

There's one thing that picks my interest and I've written this in another video but here I write it again.
You know, there are crows everywhere in Arcane. Jinx keeps shooting them, there are a "murder" of crows in the background during the scene where she kidnaps everyone for the table scene. Crows are a symbol of change and adaptability in literature. She keeps shooting them in previous acts, resisting change. She proves this resistance by lighting up the flare Vi gave her years ago, proving that even after all those years all she wanted was her sister to find her. In the table scene, though, the crows are all gathered on the roof of the building as if waiting for it to happen. Finally, she sits at the "Jinx" chair, which is decorated with the crow feathers she collected from the ones she shot. She finally accepts change, as Jinx, and the hope of getting Powder back is gone.
I feel like the mere presence of crows and how she deals with them represents her inner struggle with changing, being a different person from how her sister used to see her, and accepting that change in the end.
What do you think about this?

    • @amaranth7612
      @amaranth7612 2 ปีที่แล้ว +38

I thought that the crows represented bad luck and were the harbingers of misfortune as every time they showed up something bad happened. I have two takes on the scene where Jinx shoots one. First, is that she acknowledges this kind of superstition, and she doesn't want it to be true as she came to this place to battle her insecurities so she doesn't want to mess up. She shoots the crow as the sign of 'nah, I won't let the situation screw up this time, it's too important'. My other take is that she sees herself as the harbinger of misfortune as well, as a 'jinx', and shooting the crow represents her self-loathing for all the trouble she have done.
But I like your interpretation as well!

Mylo has always been the critical voice in her life, and he remains so even after his death. To Jinx, he's still there just like Claggor and Vi were still there in her mind.

Throughout the series. Any time we see her schizophrenic aspects "talking" to her. We only hear something akin to white noise in the background. That is until E7. After her reunion with Vi and she is at her table to staple her leg wound then for the first and only time we can actually hear Mylos voice berating her for losing Vi at the end of the battle with the fire lights, and echoing and emphasizing Powders own fears and doubts about Vi's relationship with Caitlyn.
Side note. The Mylo aspect is the one most often seen. And appears to be equal in size and strength to the Claggor aspect. That is until the lighting of the flare. In the scene in which Powder is holding the flare and we see the ghostly image of Mylo and Clagger at her back. The ghost of Mylo appears to be in agony while Clagger appears stoic. I took this as an affirmation that Powder was finally reaching a point in which she could release her guilt and shame over the events that caused he initial schism. That with Vi back in her life Powder at that moment could have finally been free from the cage she was trapped in. In fact throughout the whole series. Right until the moment she killed Silco. It was still mostly Powder. At least it was Powders ID that was the dominant personality. Jinx was the name of the cage. The ID that Powder built around herself to shield her mentally from the damage she caused the night of Vander, Mylo and Claggers deaths.

What I think is interesting that a lot of people haven't brushed on is in "The Boy Savior" (ep 7) Jinx specifically shoots between Vi and Caitlyn on the bridge almost to force them away from each other rather than to do harm. If you watch the bullets go right down the middle, not on the right side where Caitlyn was. If Jinx really was targeting Caitlyn to kill her, she would've shot on her side. This is revisited in "The Monster You Created" (Ep 9) where Jinx wants Vi to get rid of Caitlyn. Jinx wants Vi to pick her over Caitlyn, not force it per say physically through her hands. Might also have something to do with how Vi reacted when she accidently killed Mylo and Claggor.
It's also interesting that's it's not really talked about how Jinx had the shot on Ekko but didn't take it. It could be argued it happened too fast, but if you think about her reaction time in other scenes she would've either landed the shot, dodged, or continued to fire. You can see this reaction in her face just briefly when he dodges it which either snaps her out of the trance she was in of when they were kids and made the situation of potentially killing her friend real to her, or something else.
It wasn't until she had this facial reaction and a guaranteed shot on Ekko where she stopped firing. She traced his jump and had him targeted centerfold the entire time. Makes me wonder if she was more taken back that he adjusted from when they were kids, or if she, just like Ekko, couldn't "pull the trigger" for the final blow. Jinx, to me, was actually was the first one to display restraint or incapable of killing off a childhood friend, which was then mirrored by Ekko.
I might be completely off though lol
Loving all these react videos giving an even deeper dive into the characters. Can't wait to see more!

Something that strikes me is how very quick Jinx (I almost don’t even like calling her that, damn…) is to leave Silco behind and lash out at him, and how quick she is to crave Vi’s affection and approval again. Vi kinda held a surrogate parental role in her young life and I think Silco stands as more of a replacement for Vi, rather than something new, as what she looks for in Silco is very similar to what she looked for in Vi. She is of course very attached to Silco, but I think the nature of that attachment as a psychological placeholder for Vi’s absence and how it causes Vi’s return to cause inherent and automatically heavy strain on her connection with Silco, I think that says something about how unhealthy her bond with Silco is despite being a genuinely loving and caring one. She flips right back to her sister the moment she comes back and the only thing that gets in the way of that initially is her perception of Caitlyn and how it makes her question Vi’s sincerity, but still, the moment Vi returns, she’s automatically the center of Jinx’s world, Silco barely enters the picture.

I think this is an awesome, well thought out take, even if I disagree with some of it.
If she wrote Silco off as soon as Vi re-entered the scene, I don't think she would have doomed her relationship with Vi after killing Silco by choosing the Jinx chair and firing the weapon. I believe Jinx is co-dependent, violent, volatile and reactionary, and responded in the heat of the moment and in the worst way when the two most important relationships of her life were irreconcilable and at odds. It's an honest to God tragedy, and one of the best character-driven story arcs I've ever had the privilege of experiencing in my life.

    • @The_Story_Of_Us

@@The_SinisterMister I’m not saying she writes Silco off like that. I did say they still love each other, years of attachment and emotional dependency will do that, but love doesn’t get put on hold, it stays in the mind even when a relationship is severely strained (her embracing Vi in seconds after she turns up if proof of this). Silco’s death mattered to her, but ultimatelt why she turns away from Vi is because Caitlyn (unintentionally) and Silco (intentionally) convince her that Vi won’t be able to stay faithful to her and would inevitably abandon her again (because of this Jinx identity that Silco has also convinced her is perfect and shouldn’t change, even though neither of those are even remotely true and even if they were, Vi still wouldn’t abandon her. It isn’t loyalty or love for Silco that causes Jinx to abandon Vi (Jinx actually instinctively fires at and kills Silco to protect Vi when he tried to shoot her, one of the writers confirmed this).

My mother had schizophrenia. Her experiences greatly impacted my life. To me, the reason why Jinx is so reactive is that she lacks object constancy -- the trauma brought about by neglect and post-traumatic stress has made it impossible for her to integrate both the good and bad sides of a person. Great analysis; another point to consider on how Jinx views Caitlyn that I haven't seen anyone else mention: her stereotyping of Caitlyn paints her with fangs and features closely resembling the mischeivious monkey toy that sits at the root of all her present sufferings. This is fascinating, as it suggests Jinx may be projecting her own failures with the crystals and her contraptions onto Vi and her association with Caitlyn, the enforcers, and Piltover's gemstone, precisely how her own father figure Silco projected his fears of Vander and abandonment onto Jinx and Vi. What's even more interesting about all this is Jinx's actual awareness of Silco's shortcomings without that same clarity when it comes to herself.

My personal opinion on them is that they both shared the same dream for the underground but Vander realized that what they were doing is not creating a better future but repeating the cycle at the cost of change that is what he thought when he saw VI and Powder when they were kids that his actions cost them their family and any more it will cost them as well. Vander wanted VI to realized that as well so she can be better because the young can change the future to be better. Silco however came to realize that as well when rising Jinx that she can continue what he wanted, to do better than him. That’s what I think about Vander and Silco ideology but came to realize the cost of their actions and the potential of the future 🤔

Good analysis, but I don't think it's about Vander realising the cycle being repeated.
Imho Vander saw the cost of their revolution, the price of true freedom and was unwilling to pay it. Silco is willing to pay whatever price is required to be free of Piltover. It's the age old question of does the end justify the means. Silco believes it does. I don't think he's evil, but just set on his goal - a free Zaun, free of Piltover. To do this, he needs power, which means he's willing to do anything (child exploitation, the bit where he says he would have killed the woman's son for betraying him, drug supply) to achieve it, because it may be bad, but it's for the greater good. He's willing to head into the abyss in order to achieve his aims. Vander stares at the abyss and blinks. He views the lives being lost as too high a price, that being alive but living in terrible conditions is better than sacrificing lives for freedom.
Silco wants to be free of Piltover, he needs power to achieve that aim. But it doesn't drive him in itself, he views power as a means to an end. If all he sought was power and wealth, he already has it. For me the telling scene is the one with the other gang bosses in the penthouse, where they bring in the dirty air. The other bosses have used their power to give themselves a nice life, clean air - and they all choke when the contaminated air comes in. Silco doesn't. He hasn't allowed himself to forget, to become weak. If he was motivated by power, he wouldn't have been breathing the dirty air as a reminder. For him, any hardship, any cost is acceptable - at least until the cost becomes Jinx.
      At least that's my interpretation.
      Georgia Dow,
I'd love to see more about Silco, him and Jinx are by far the most nuanced characters and I think he isn't really a villain, just someone who is "willing to do the things others aren't" in order to achieve his goal - being free of Piltover.

When Vi and Jinx reunited, the scene really hit me like a truck. I know what it's like to be abandoned by someone you really care about. I've had so many dreams and nightmares about the person that reality and fiction started to blend. I know the feeling of thinking you recognize someone because they look like that person who abandoned you. The line "Are you real?" is such a genuine question, because once you see this distorted version of someone for so long, the real version is jarring to see again. Especially when they're so different to what you think you know. The Vi that Jinx believes in is cruel and heartless. She abandoned Jinx so she believes she doesn't love her anymore. So when she sees the real Vi, it doesn't seem real. This Vi embraces her and clearly still loves her. This is the Vi from when Jinx was still Powder, the one who seemed to die with Mylo and Claggor. Combined with her hallucinations, Jinx has no reason to believe in any of this. And sadly, the part that makes her realize this is real is Caitlin's entrance, because it assures her that what Sevika said is true.
There's also Vi's perspective, who had this vision of Powder in her head for all this time. And when she finally sees Powder again, she's looking at a different person. Jinx. And when she sees that she just freezes and watches her, which in turn allows her to be captured.
I still remember watching this with my friends in my dorm for the first time. We were binge watching the whole series and we got to this scene. I had to leave the room because it was so emotional for me. Incredible job on everyone's part when making this, it still blows my mind how real this scene was.
Also I've really been loving the arcane videos, keep up the great work!!

I'm so glad I found your channel. I've been coming to terms that I have been dealing with depression for many years, so I'm trying to save some money for actual therapy, but until then, its been so healing to watch your videos. You've confirmed so many things that I feel, and all while enjoying the same kinds of things I love like Arcane. Every time I see a new video, I immediately save it for after work as a personal treat before bed. Idk if you'll ever see this, but please know you're appreciated and cherished. Thanks for everything you do! ❤

Weirdly enough 2:08 that deer in headlights uncontrollable shooting reminds me of the first confrontation with the Predator in the 1987 movie, you have all these seasoned soldiers on top of their game, they saw everything they went through hell and back and nothing can surprise them anymore, and then they just break... in that movie it's a perfect setting to fill the audience with horror.
For Jinx reminders of that massive traumatic event are like that. It was the first time that her toy trap worked. It worked spectacularly as well, finally she could show everyone and especially Vi that she is a valuable part of the team, but in that moment she also learns that she lost everyone and even worse it's because her spectacular trap caused so much damage and then even Vi leaves her again. I can imagine the terror. For her, it's especially brutal because even her biggest triumph just ends up as her biggest loss and defeat. Then she does the same thing in the final episode.

I would like to add something, to your statement: "the negative thoughts and voices we carry in our heads, often happends us from our childhood."
I figured that, even in traumatic situations, even when I wasn't a child anymore and my sister had a lot of impact on me, did a lot of influence how I´m thinking now as an older adult woman.

I will also add that Jinx seems to bury many of those doubts brought about by the incident in the 3rd episode after her "baptism" scene with Silco, since we see her more free afterward making the gemstone work for her. We don't see those doubts resurface until Sevika tell her about Vi being back. As shown by the scene contained in the blade. Those seeds mentioned are growing during the reunion with her sister and the introduction of Caitlyn but made worse when she confronts Silco about his involvement in keeping the sisters separated. When he says "she is here for the gemstone, not for you" she hesitates. This may be why Mylo seems to grow in the bridge scene when Jinx sees Vi running back for Caitlyn. Many of her fears are coming true even if only true from her perspective.

One thing i have not noticed anyone talk about is "Chuck" the bartender. Jinx insists on calling him Chuck because he is the same kid from the episode 1 kid fight. He was the boy "Chuck" who cornered powder when she threw the stolen loot overboard. I believe the reason he tells her he has a different name is because he is now afraid of her and doesnt want her to make the connection to that fateful day. But jinx cheekily lets him know that she does remember him by setting off the same faulty "pink smoke" grenade on his back that she used "with nails" when they were kids!

Something that I noticed about the fight between Jinx and Ekko. How Ekko used the game that he played with Powder as a child to gain an advantage with there fight on the bridge. I really think the game was Ekkos successful attempt at baiting Jinx into a pattern he was most familiar in fighting her with.
When we usually see Jinx in control and focused in a fight, we see her aggressively dominating multiple people by keeping them away with her mini gun (which she does both physically and emotionally), crippling people using her explosions, and taking out any main threats using her pistol and amazing reflexes. Shes even able to take immediate reactions on order to take out incoming projectiles with it in a blink on the eye. So how was Ekko able to still beat Jinx when she had such an advantage?
It was the game. Ekko use the game, something that had specific rules and familiarity with the both of them, to fall into a familiar pattern of attack that Jinx took as a kid. And for anyone who knows Ekko, he uses his past experience and learns to make changes to get a successful outcome. He made it so that Jinx would likely fire off in a pattern he was already familiar with, and adjusted himself in order to take the win.

What I found interesting about the way jinx hear the voices is that neither vander nor vi are actually part of her common hallucinations, vander didn't quite die because of her explosion directly and she still feel he was his father and never said anything mean to her, as for vi, she isn't dead so not a ghost, even if jinx doesn't know she is alive, she doesn't know for sure.
I also like the fact it shows jinx might be "crazy" but she isn't stupid, she one very ingenious and she was never going to be as good as vi fighting, she was a shooter.
Both sevika and silco know jinx for years and know when not to lie to her or play the "what do you mean?" Card

As someone who went through childhood trauma, has undiagnosed PTSD (the psych worker at my GP literally told me so) and had EMDR therapy at 19, I found Jinx so relatable. It really never stops haunting me, though EMDR did help me, for one, I no longer wake up in tears from trauma related nightmares, but the moment a situation happens that hits to close to home or someone disrespects my comfort zone, I still have the anxiety attacks. I was born with GERD, and PTSD attacks actually trigger that. Spent the entire night vomiting after my last PTSD attack 2 weeks ago, (a now ex-)friend brought me in a situation that could have ended similar to one of my traumas despite me warning her that was outside of my comfort zone and saying 'No'. Jinx' flashbacks, as well as being arguably psychotic just sends me back to a time before EMDR and medication. I really do wish I could hug her.

I just realized when Jinx is holding the gun towards Vi and says "youre playing me" and Mylo says something to her in her mind and shes said "I'm in no mood" it made me wonder. Where did that speech pattern come from? Vi and Vander didn't talk like that...but Silco does. So it really shows how the scriptwriters took her personal development into account from child to teenager/young adult and how the people around her shape the way she talks and reacts to things.

Id love a prequel where we see how silco raised her cus when she is at the fighting machine plus when she is first introduced. She is an exceptional fighter but just not as good as vi which is why she reverts back to her actual strength which is shooting. But she was definitely taught how to fight in her own style but also didnt become completely emotionless or cold which means silco taught her more as a way to protect herself not as a way to turn her into a soldier for him.

I'm surprised that nobody has noticed that the first time Jinx looks at who she thought was Vi, it actually looks like Vi. Notice the face structure. In the second shot though, wrong-Vi has a different face structure. Our brain tends to trick us in that way. It's amazing just how much the animators pay attention to detail.

I also think it's interesting that she has the blue cloud tattoos....when vi gave her that blue gas flare to "call for help" so that vi would be able to find her no matter where she was. She has those blue cloud tattoos and it's a blatant cry for help. But notice, it's only on one side. Meaning that she's split between jinx and powder..... interesting

I can relate to Jinx the most out of this entire series, I am part of a DID system and see a lot of ourself in her. From the mood swings, to hearing voices, heck even seeing who is speaking. We aren't for sure that she has DID but it wouldn't surprise us, and if she does, it's a better representation than what Hollywood gives of a very serious mental health issue.
