The lever sacrificing yourself was a good discussion. As much as I'd love to think I'd pull it and sacrifice myself low-key I wouldn't have the cojones to do it for random people. I'd probably only sacrifice myself if it was friends or family on the other track. For randoms I'm definitely not sure

Nobody of reasonable intelligence would sacrifice themselves for 5 people in that scenario. Human nature prioritises self preservation. If someone puts a gun to your head: you would do exactly what that person says, unless they're telling you to kill somebody much closer to you (family, child, close friend) in which case you may doubt it. There's no reason for you to act so selflessly, the average human fears death to a certain extent, even if they don't actively contemplate it.

Personally I agree with Talia, in my head I would like to think I would be the hero and save the 5 people, but deep down, I wouldn't have the balls to essentially "kill myself", the thought of inflicting pain upon myself is terrifying, and in the moment I would try and avoid that fear and deal with the survivors guilt

@@nbassasin8092 its not personal belief system tho. Its people in all their comforts wanting to be the hero without actively contemplating the repercussions. Simon for example is saying he would sacrifice, but really? That is nonsense. Would he really give up every little thing hes done in his life for 5 random people? Im a million percent sure he wouldnt even do it for 5 of his friends, and that is completely normal. There are certain things such as love, attraction, self preservation that have been present in humans since the dawn of time. Those wont change just because you want it to.

I struggle to believe that anyone would choose to die in order to save 5 randoms that they've never met. Simon might believe he would do it, but I 100% don't think he could if that situation were to ever occur.

Not concerning at all. It's the natural law of self-preservation. People would probably like to think they're selfless when asked in surveys, but in reality I'm betting 90%+ of people wouldn't give up their life savings or their lives to save 5 random people.
@@s94628 you didn't let 4 people die, you observed 4 people die. Switching the trolley could even lead to complications futher down the track you didnt know about.
On the end, by not switching you also didn't save the one person, you let the train do its natural course
Also switching could mean that you get charged for murder, accessory for murder or at best man slaughter

Simon probably doesn't realize that pulling the lever in any given situation means that he will be held accountable for the consequences that may come later on. Choosing to be a witness is a safer option as no matter what happens, you aren't directly responsible for anyone's death. Sure, you may not be able to save the larger number of people but at least you aren't a murderer.
Being a wtiness and doing nothing still means you will be held accountable by yourself. You'd see yourself as a murderer and you would technically be one.

Whether or not you see yourself as a murderer is entirely up to you but you wouldn't be legally marked as one as you had no input in what was happening
@@aabidhjaufer7225 How could this fly in court? If you had a situation where you clearly figure out that you can derail a trolley to NOT kill 5 people, surely the law can make you accountable for the deaths of those 5 even if they're on the preset path of the trolley.

@@Karppaguy Choosing to derail the trolley would mean that you're deliberately killing that one person who would've otherwise been completely safe had you not done anything about it. You're literally participating in an action that involves putting someone's life in servere danger whereas choosing to remain as a bystander would mean that you aren't responsible for anything that occurred.

In real life, when you know you have the ability to save those 5 people and kill the 1 person for it, you kill the one person. Otherwise, you KNOW you "observed" 5 dying despite having the ability and complete control over the situation.
There is no competition. I'd be glad to be ostracized as a murderer in that point (although I wouldn't be). The problem didn't occur because of me, I made the best case scenario CHOICE in the scenario I came up upon, in which I had all the info needed to save the most amount of people.
Nevertheless, my original comment had NO ONE dying if you pull the lever. You'd still be "observing" 5 people dying if you did nothing. But the whole point is that you know that you have the choice to alter the situation. Hence you pull the lever.

As much as I want to be able to say that I am a good enough person that I would save those 5 people over myself I think realistically I wouldn't. I would be so emotional and stressed in a situation like that, that I think I would end up just closing my eyes, blocking my ears and waiting for it to be over because like Talia said I don't think I could bring myself to just doing it and killing myself.

The money is calm. But I don't think I'd pull the lever if I was on it either like Talia. I'd probably get my hand there, ponder about it, then chicken out. I know some people are extremely selfless and would do it. Or they have major hero-complex vibes and they want to die a hero. Or they don't want to live with the guilt of saving your life for 5 other people. The sacrifice lever was pretty easy to me, as much as I would like to think that I am ‘heroic’ in a sense but I don’t think I would pull the lever because if it’s random people I don’t care about their life’s as much as mine because I want to be able to still see my family and I get it they probably have families too but for me, it’s an easy decision I’m not sacrificing myself for random people

They answered that they would both pull the Lever. This is not wrong but its their opinion. However, from another aspect simon and talia should be doing nothing and should not be pulling the lever to kill one person. This is because by fate the train is en route to kill 5 ppl instead of 1. This means the one person should be safe due to fate. If talia and simon were to pul the lever they would be messing with that one persons fate causing him death due to their own preferences of wanting to save more ppl. So the answer i would have went for is to do nothing and to let the train take its natural course instead of intervening with one mans safety.
Even if it’s a million people including all my friends and family I would always save myself and that’s the same for most people whether they admit it or not
