Why I No Longer Film Haul Videos

  • If you've been around on this channel for a while, you probably remember the days when I was constantly filming haul videos. Unboxings, clothing hauls, beauty hauls, college dorm/apartment hauls, PR packages, yearly Black Friday + "What I Got for Christmas" videos. So. Many. Hauls!!!! You name it, I was either buying it or filming a video about it!
    Of course, none of these things are inherently evil. I do see the good in the fact that I was able to share about great brands, great sales, modest yet cute clothing, etc. I'm thankful that these videos connected me to so many viewers over the years!
    However, looking back, I had quite the consumeristic/materialistic mindset. I put so much value into the things that I owned, what I wore, what companies sent me, etc. It breaks my heart to think that I could have ever sent the message of "if you have this, you will be happy/your life will be better."
    The "shopaholic" days are now over... thank the Lord! There is so much freedom to be found in contentment and gratitude, realizing that you have more than enough as is. If y'all would like to see any other videos related to this topic, please let me know :)

    Meredith, I have been subscribed to your channel for as long as I can remember, and I am loving this new era. The past few years have been a big growing season in my life, and during that time, I stopped spending so much time on TH-cam (and shopping, etc.), and instead learned to rest in who I am in Christ and not in what I own/achieve. It is so cool how the Lord has shaped your heart in similar ways and that He has led you back to TH-cam. It feels like reconnecting with an old friend. Thank you for speaking the Truth with boldness + sharing your wisdom with us!!

    Thank you so much for being faithful and sharing this video. I’m not a very materialistic person but God is still convicting me about some of the possessions I have that are still holding too much value in my heart. I’m crying because I’m finally to the point that I want to be free from these possessions and I’m going to get rid of them. It will be hard but I know I will be free once I do it. God bless you💕

    Please don’t be too harsh on yourself on your hauls, it was very trendy and popular to make those videos and share what you were buying. I thoroughly enjoyed your haul and clothing and adore your style. I too had a “shopping era” in my teen years and can relate to feeling some guilt for spending so much energy towards that. Your new mindset is healthy and a great message to share, and I think a lot of us who grew up through that time and are slowly recovering. It’s so tempting even now with Instagram and tik tok to see other people still sharing their hauls and deals 😅

      Thank you 💗 I definitely try not to be tooo hard on myself about it, as I can now see how God’s plan was to bring me out on the other side + be able to share about it!
      I agree that part of it is likely just due to age... The older we get, the more we realize the things that truly matter :)

    You are such an inspiration!! I struggled with materialism as well when I was in college. I mean, buying a lot of clothes to impress guys, even strangers. But when i started reading the Bible and listen to solid Christian pastors in 2018, my perspective on material possessions changed. All glory to God for that. The kind of content you do right now is way better than any type of clothing hauls/ makeup tutorials/makeup reviews or get ready with me we all see on youtube. May God bless you more and more!

    One of my goals for 2021 is to get better about controlling my materialistic tendencies and save more of my money. So far I’ve been doing really well, and this video was just further encouragement for me to keep going. I already feel so much happier inside and I feel more free knowing that I’m controlling my urges and putting more of my money towards my future. I think this video is something everyone needs to see! I love this! My little sister and I talk all the time about all the things we wouldn’t own if it weren’t for TH-cam and social media. I don’t watch haul videos and haven’t for years for that very reason. It just encourages you to buy things you don’t need and in all honesty, probably don’t even want. The power of influence is real. It’s funny you made this video because when I think of you, I don’t remember a single haul video you did, but I definitely think of you talking about Jesus 💗💗

    I can totally relate to this! As a predominantly fashion and faith TH-camr I was in rut for while. I felt like I needed to buy clothes to make content. Then I began my faith videos, let me tell you making faith videos really brought me so much joy. granted I still make fashion videos but not as often as I used to. With less spending I’ve also become more frugal with my money!

    This video contains a great message that is definitely the opposite of what is popular these days. Allllll the time I see "Amazon and Tiktok recommendations" in my subscription box. Sure cool stuff is cool stuff, but mindless consumerism is so bad for our self control, our wallet, and the environment. As a kid I always wanted to be a shopaholic but never really could be bc I didn't have the money lol. Now I do have some money bc I'm 19 but I've learned recently how horrible fast fashion is for the environment (as well as any area of consumerism) so I buy as little as I can now, which is better for me financially and certainly better for the environment. I get most of my clothes from the thrift store, which is cheaper AND keeps items from the landfill so it's definitely a win win. Thanks for making this video bc it's definitely something that needed to be said

      Ohhh yes to all of this 🙌🏼 SO many reasons not to get caught up in the consumeristic mindset. It’s hard to stay away from the influence and recommendations coming in everywhere... but it’s definitely worth it!

    That's something I've been praying about for this year in my life (to be content with what I have). It's so hard, but I'm trying not to shop as much and to be conscious about my motive behind something I'm considering buying. It's especially hard because gifting is my love language, and I love buying things for others as well as myself. Any tips to help me move forward in this?

    • @Meredithgraces
      @Meredithgraces  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Wow, totally relate to this! And kudos to you for making that a focus this year 🙌🏼
      Something I’ve learned to love, in terms of gifting to others, is the specialness in something homemade. I love painting little cards, sending snail mail, baking goodies, etc! These things are full of meaning and typically not too expensive, if you’re looking to save money. On the other hand, I definitely don’t think gift giving in itself is bad, when you’re doing it from a place of love for others! 💗💗
      I think I’ll make a future video on actionable steps to take towards being less of a shopaholic :)

    Meredith, that's a really great topic for discussion! I went back to Jesus earlier in 2020 because of a lot of sad things happened. God helped me and healed my wounded heart. And through my journey I started to realize that modern life is definitely more materialistic. When we young we can be easily deceived and fooled by ads, marketing and all that evil. That's why I let myself buy the last makeup products (makeup become my way to show creativity and have fun mixing shades.; I have also analyzed that makeup is sinful if we use it for evil purposes). So, in 2021 I went for low buy/no buy.
    I can sign after every single word and thought in your video. If everyone could spend a dollar not on unnecessary thing but on charity, our world would be so much better!

    • @Meredithgraces
      @Meredithgraces  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Isn’t it wonderful how God can open our eyes to things we were previously blind to?!
      I agree, it’s so easy to get pulled into the marketing behind everything. There’s definitely nothing wrong with having a passion for fashion or, in your case, with makeup and art! It’s just when we let those things take priority over God that they become an issue.
      And I also completely agree with your comment on donating to charity.... imagine if everyone, for just one month, donated their money instead of buying more clothing/makeup/accessories. So much good could be done in the world!!!

    • @alexandrinedubois769
      @alexandrinedubois769 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Meredithgraces Absolutely agree! Always remind myself that there is only God and our souls, hearts, not goods and thing that even has some meaning for us. And 1 John 5:21 is a good short prayer.
      And once again thank you for uploading these videos. I am always looking forward for hearing from you. Unfortunately, there are not so many conscious Christian youtubers talking about this basic, yet important parts of our lives. Especially in 2020 there was a total boom of online shopping and brands making new stuff and collection almost every week.

    Your faith-related content is why I subscribed to your channel. You do a great job! This talk reminds me of the passages in the gospels with Jesus and the rich man, where the man asked Jesus what good thing he must do to inherit eternal life. After Jesus told him to keep the commandments, the man said that he has kept them. Then, Jesus told him to go sell all his possessions and give to the poor and he will have treasure in heaven. Then to come, follow him. The man went away sad because he had great wealth. Jesus told his disciples that it is hard for someone who is rich to enter the kingdom of Heaven. It is easier for a camel to go through the eye of the needle than for someone who is rich to enter the kingdom of God.
