3:37 - even if most people can't hear it, the fact that so much thought was put into such a minor detail is just amazing composition. I'm a concert violinist, and there are small details like that that are incorporated into our playing. One example is a trill. Some trills you start with your base finger, and some you start with your next finger. Similar to your upstrum, I change the variation of the trill I use depending on if the music is going up or going down.
I think your mention is really flattering :) as a guitar player, I know how important are these things for a musician that is always trying to craft a song in the best way he can.
Yep, it’s usually those little things that most people miss which make the difference. It’s always great when instructors (in the case, obviously the guitarist from the band) don’t shy away from the minute details when teaching how to play something accurately.
its cool that some new players are trying to learn stuff like this but remember u r goin to have to play it slow till u get it down reall good. I wanted to just play fast when i first started 13 years ago.. And I was the only person i knew let alone girl playing slayer in my first year but i was also practicing 5 hours a day and had a friend wit 8 yrs exp who would slow it down for me . I think solid state amps can still get pretty mean sound depending on the amp. For those who are new and want to seriously just play metal, you should get some 10 or at least 11 gauge strings and think about getting your guitar intonated for playing in drop C. Bands like this are what got me into string skipping..Hope they have a tutorial of the solo of These fevered times.
I'm too lazy to look it up right now but they may be a pair of 81/85's. You may not like them, that's up to you to decide, but a number of great bands have been/are using them, so there sould be no worries about the (sound) quality. The debate around active vs. passive pickups is always hot amongst guitar players. I'm not the active pu. guy either, I use DiMarzios and a few Seymour Duncans, all passive. I can recommend some, if you think.
@knightabor You may be limited by a number of things. The first and foremost thing that shapes your sound is your hand (i.e. you playing style). As you progress, your sound will get better. Second thing is the guitar. Kris is using an ESP M-II in this vid. The quality of the wood and the pickups make a huge difference. The amp is only the last thing mentionable. A tube amp sound is much different from any solid state (like your Vypyr).
Just started playing a little bit ago. Trying to learn by sound and through resources like this. i've got a BC Rich Warlock and a Peavy Vypyr15 amp. Playing in the D standard for this song, but I can't seem to get the sound anywhere close to this. Am I being limited by my amp or something?
this is one of the most beautifully crafted songs ever on guitar (coming from a drummer)

Holy shit! It's Kris Norris! He was the guitarist for Darkest Hour from 2001 to 2008!
Still one of my all time favorite songs
I second that.
For anyone wondering, D Tuning is DGCFAD, Drop D tuning is DADGBE, this song is D Tuning.
that's awesome that you're doing lessons on all these darkest hour songs kris
this guy is an awesome guitar player
I am a drummer and I LOVE this shit man. I just wish it had the full song.
God damn what i would give to have him as my teacher.
I will 2nd this I have become such a better guitar player just watching him teach on jamplay.
I want to say thank you to you guys!
"I love those Swedish metal riffs..."
I think we all figured that out when Darkest Hour hired you XD

Any chance we can get some Locus Factor lessons? That would be amazing.

I like his hat is he selling it and also that bridge part was wicked. P.s he must be the son or even grand son of chuck norris

@danukenator123 No need to be cocky, just someone trying to learn...
does he teach the solo to this song in the full lesson?
@BizzonaterInc Chuck Norris of Guitar
This is DGCFAD right?
Wish you could tell which frets and strings :(
Well you could just search for tabs then dude

wish he´s still with them
@TheWoodenmushroom i think its Drop C tuning
He literally says D standard in the video
tuning sir
what kind of amp are you using?
Sounds like a triple rec
The lyrics to this song are scary cuz it's what were headed too did y'all predict the future
how the hell am i supposed to know what to play if i dont know every variation of every chord
kris norris
i would give a lot for that surname
u should name your kid chuck :D
the pickups are just EMGs. not too high quality if you ask me (i have them myself, nothing special imo)
IT'S D STANDARD NOT DROP D OR DROP C
D-G-C-F-A-D
here is an idea why dont u say how 2 play the chourds
@indelebledance drop d i think..
@TheSamShowOfficial Here's an idea. How about you learn to spell. And actually look at how he plays them? It's very simple really.
....Duh?
This C# tuning, actually.
No its not its D standard
