So it becomes evident that Super Mario RPG derives its gameplay in reference from Final Fantasy and Dragon Quest. From underdogs to a secret superboss, always train hard to fight to the finish.
I was hoping and praying that Culex would get an arrangement in the remake. When I finally got the remake myself and got to Culex, I was so disappointed to hear the original theme even though I had the orchestral arrangements selected. After I beat the game and unlocked the sound test, I checked to see if there were arrangements just there as a postgame easter egg. And I saw "It's been sealed" and nearly had a heart attack. I played through all the postgame rematches, beat Johnny Jones, got the Extra Shiny Stone, grinded up to Level 30 (max in SMRPG), and when I unsealed that door and walked in, I was absolutely delighted that this incredible arrangement of FF4's boss theme had graced my ears. Between the leaks and people figuring it out before me, I had somehow managed to remain completely unspoiled on the Culex rematch. And holy shit am I glad.
I wanted to remain unspoiled so badly. But I saw a TH-cam thumbnail and I almost cried I was so upset. I want to know what my reaction would've been if I hadn't been spoiled.
Kinda gives Kingdom Hearts vibes, specifically that one track called Wave of Darkness. Not surprising, considering both games were soundtracked by the legend herself, Yoko Shimomura.
If Soken has challenged Yoko Shimomura for the crown of best FF music arranger, then it would seem she has more than risen to that challenge, because WOW!
@@DavidCosmology It seemed that he made the music for the official Inazuma Eleven games first and then made renditions for the anime adaptation. So yeah, the music is pretty memorable, but not as memorable as Chrono Trigger.
He’s not that bad if you have a good strategy, and if you’re quick on the revives if any party members go down. Peach with the Lazy Shell carries this fight as always. And remember, start with the Wind Crystal first, and attack it with Mario’s jump. And always make sure ALL your party members are at full health when Culex does his “once per 5 turns” Meteor attack. Final Claw’s not that bad though because you can block it with good enough timing.
Nintendo would never do it because FFXIV is multiplat and iirc not even on Switch so can't even be platform-specific. Square co-owns Culex, Mallow, Geno, and %100 owns the song because it's literally just a remix of FFIV's boss theme. So with Nintendo's significantly more likely approval of Mallow, Geno, and Culex, it could theoretically happen. Just without the Mario characters or branding.

I really appreciate how they were able to give Culex a fancy new 3D form in a way that keeps the joke about him being a flat 2D sprite intact.
Even better, the remake ENHANCES the joke by making the characters actual 3D models instead of just pre-rendered sprites.
Something totally off-topic, this music would be perfect for 7-star Tera Raids in Scarlet/Violet since they're *brutal*

Took him long enough, but he finally discovered the Z Axis. I'm proud of him.
