Nipsey Hussle is an incredibly intelligent and self aware individual. When he speaks you wouldn't expect such wisdom and knowledge to come out of his mouth. His music can be soulful at times and surprisingly eye opening. I don't think he gets as much credit as he should for this new generation of rap. It's great you took the time to do a break down on him.

Awww Nipsy kiss baby of his sister on the cheek. I bet he was such a loving dad to his newborns Emani and Kross. I wish we could see those pictures here on youtube💕🙋☺💐🌸😇
Nipsey music is the same as his mind.. its deel & detailed.. listen to his lyrics. Its teaching motivational & all about his true life.. his music is his story.
If you take time to listen to his mix tape on you tube & victory lap. You wouldn't say his music is just cool. Its obviously your not up on his music only what you hear on the radio.
It's crazy how big Jay-Z became. I was just watching his Dead Presidents video (love that song and vid) and here is a young ass Jay-Z spittin bars like "Rappers going broke, tryin' to keep up with me My rise to riches surprised the bitches: think harder You know this nigga, Jay-Z, Shawn Carter" and not even knowing the super rich part comin true. What always gives me goosebumps is the last scene when he's just chillin, jus chillin wit AZ, Big, rollin dice. Makes you think that the people you chill wit today and love to be 'round will one day be somethin big, but the question is will they forget who they really are and give back to the people that made them who they are in tha first place? "I don't have the answer to these questions"
Xavier Greaux I'm a huge Curren$y fan. In 2016 he dropped 12 mixtapes, and the quality for each one was very consistent. The man gave a full year of free music, so I will definitely be buying his next LP.
Thank you sir! I've read countless interviews and books from co-producers and former artists that worked with him. Everyone has a common theme that they recorded the greatest material of their career with Dr. Dre. Not to mention how Stat said Jimmy Iovine called them the greatest practice team of all time.
Nipsey not just talk the talk he walked the walk he showed his dedication by example of being hands on to his city to help make a positive change. With Ownership Employment.. Education. Entrepreneurship. Donations to schools.
Goin back to watch how Nipsey was grinding and make his way up, makes Victory Lap sound even more like a true victory lap. It got my vote for 2018 album of the Year
You guys are lucky Hip-hop DX doesn't charge for the college course Hip-hop lessons they constantly drop. On that note, every few years comes a rapper who changes the way rappers approach business ventures. Easy-E, Jay-Z, 50 Cent just to name a few. In an appearance on " Sneaker Shopping", 50 said that a pair of kicks will never be a car, and that he never understood why people spend so much money on shoes before more important priorities. It's that type of thinking that helped secure both Reebok and Vitamin Water, and helped him survive beef with basically all of New York rappers. Beef? 50 got rich off Beef. but I will admit Jadakiss got him on Checkmate.
I tend to go the hipster route. The least successful the more I listen. Narratives about grinding to get to the top are more earnest coming from a person on the way up than from a person already there.
Respect to Nipsey Hu$$le keep getting it. Jay-Z continue elevating. Jay-Z is the artist of our dreams & nightmares. He has skills, he's still competitive in his late 40's, he boasts about what he really has done and achieved, he's focused. If Jay-Z had Papoose-level sales, fools would be like 'yooo son, Jay-Z deserves to be #1...' but since he actually DID make savvy music & business moves, haters be like 'Jay-z is overrated...'
Thank you for another dope video. I remember Nipsey posting flyers at the Subway at Crenshaw and Slauson. I had a copy of Slauson Boy Vol 1 from 2006 (cd's were lost or stolen)
Not a huge tech-9 fan anymore but I've come to really respect the way he runs Strange especially love how he brings out and signs some old and new talent. ie Mayday or brotha lynch
Man! ¡MayDay! is one of favorite groups ever. I LOVE Take Me To You Leader and Klusterfuck. Thats one of the best signings in Strange history in my opinion. He does a great job of keeping the label diversified. Great point, TD.
If I'm being honest, 50 cent is a guy that comes to mind. I like 50 a lot, in fact I'm planning on going to see him preform in may, but after the first album which was undoubtedly dope, it seemed he declined each project. He still had hits like I get money, candy shop, etc, but after Get Rich or Die Tryin' I don't know if he really had a body of work that strong. If I'm being honest though his latest work has been very disappointing and as a fan I must say I'm a fan of the image, as well as bravado 50 has. As always great job Justin, thank you for those two stories and the work you do every week.
Thanks sam! I don't think you're wrong about 50's album trajectory. GRODT is such a great project. Same for the first half of the Massacre. I do love War Angel still, but nothings been the same. And at the same time, his profile is bigger than ever.
we need justin hunte tshirts asap... one of his head with the smile, and a breaksown one with the i dont have the answers to these questions on the back
I think Nipsey would've surpassed Jay. Z Nip was an threat to all aspect of life in our culture in this generation in positive ways. When Nipsey spoke he was intelligent enough to breakdown his points that you could visualize his meaning in our mind. He was hope for our society who didnt know what hope was.
Just to watch this video MORE than 2 years later POST transition of Nipsey Hussle, I'm in awe of how calculatingly smart he was to maneuver in the manner of which he did. We lost a good one way too soon. It's so sad to know that he's not with us anymore after all that he did for the community. And then you wonder, wow, he brought it back to the hood and the hood let him down. It's always some jealous hearted ASS that wants to see you fail and won't mind snuffing you out to NOT see you get to your kingdom. But GOD ain't dead...Nipsey had the biggest send off in HIPHOP history..and NO one has ever seen a greater man!! I am in my 50's studying a Master's program at Full Sail University and came across the Late Great Nipsey Hussle...So, this video is pretty sentimental to me. May God continue to watch over Nip's family and may his soul Rests in Enternal Peace. Love, Toni Sea
For me before i ever listened to Kanyes music(which i know is wierd im only 16) i liked him because of how he tried to create his own business and brand and he is doing fairly successfully but then when i listened to his music and realized how great it was i gained so much more respect for him and what he does and is doing on the business side
Thanks for another great episode, Justin. I've been back since episode 12 and I usually don't have the gumption to comment, but this breakdown is impeccable and the new format suits you 10,000% bro. I'm proud of you and I hope you're well.
I've been going a lot better. Saved my mom and finally put all the fitness advice you and Dana gave me to good use! I'll definitely contact you on Twitter soon, big bro!
i would love hip hop dx to turn their website and app into a fluent player for their youtube content essentially making it a smart tv app turning hiphopdx into a crossplatform channel, up the breakdowns without watering it down, add more exclusives and live peformance, but more importantly add a shop tab which opens a mini hip hop amazon that we can buy any hip hop album or single or artist merch thats out, hip hop dx gets a cut the artist takes a bigger percentage, which could evolve to a spotlight partnership to help push hiphop acts and the dx brand, which is vital to hip hop.
Justin - Love the way you break things down with respect and research and leave people with things to think about. I love that you don't tie things up at the end! Keep up the amazing work!
Very interesting video. Subbed. I'm loving these breakdown videos. Intelligent debate on a musical (and geographical) culture which is, too me, quite alien. Quick aside, Edinburgh is pronounced "eh-din-bu-ruh." Us Scots do that shit a lot, and I wholeheartedly apologise!
A lot of people also forget fat Joe 360?? one of my favorite professional inspiration here it is 30 years later and he's still getter bigger n better . Bottom line OWNERSHIP !! Build brick by brick if that's all you can afford soon you'll own a house!
MORE ENTREPRENEURSHIP BREAKDOWNS PLEASE... I think it's a major part of hip hop....Maybe even another element of it... Definitely not covered well by the hip hop blog world.. I hope to see more
i mean, don't get me wrong now. i love all these breakdowns. its just seeing artist using their influence on the culture to leverage their way into success, it's great to see
To the last question of the video. I, for one, don't care about how successful a song/album is. I only care about whether it's good or not. I've never been one to argue an artist's (or athlete, for that matter) financial gains as if I'm the one who gets to spend that money. If I'm arguing a rapper's greatness with a friend or someone else, I'm gonna talk about the bars and content of the songs, not the money they generated. There are plenty of things I find to be garbage that have been bought in MASSIVE amounts by others.
I'm with you. I hate that when I try to discuss hiphop with most people they use $$ as an arguing point, but they do that with everything. "Apple makes the best products because everyone has them". "Men Lie. Women Lie. But numbers don't." Is a dope line but I always disagreed with it wholeheartedly.
Great breakdown! Regarding the question at the end - for me Chamillionaire is a prime example of this, although his music is really great his success outside his music and his knowledge really amaze me and make him that much greater in my eyes
Check the video list Jake Rohn did on Rappers who Found New Hustles outside of rap. He covers Chamillionaire in his piece. Thanks for the comment, Reh!
I think that the internet age and specifically SoundCloud killed the dope cause of success thing, like there are a lot of SoundCloud rappers that are really big, and they put that shit out for free, and they don't make money like that, I still think they are dope. Smaller rappers as well, they are just harder to find
This has to be my favorite breakdown, hits too close to home. i grew up listening to nipsey hussle and i use to see him all the time in the streets when im going to get food and shit being a fat ass. But i respect this man a lot, me being indecisive about the gang life his music showed me that shit aint worth and or it isnt cool, to something more positive with my life so i decided to start making music so i can star building my empire. Nipsey changed my view on life forreal. LA shit man, i want to work with him one day
OH I can't wait for the next video. Who do we respect more as a person rather than their art, and who do we appreciate their art more than who they are. DAMN! I cannot wait (+)
This is a dope breakdown. I've been sleeping on nipsey and I will definitely check out his projects as a result of his entrepreneurial zeal which you've hi-lighted here! Thanks HipHopDX. Btw where do I get a record wallpaper like that one?! I need that in my life
Man that's 90% of ppl!! LOL! Every time there's a new artist or song on the radio or playing in the club no one changes the station or stop dancing because that rapper is talking about BS. Ppl listen to the beat and keep it moving.
@HiphopDX Yo when u say the brother had a jerry curl. If you did some research or knew what ethnic background, brother You'll already know that's his Natural Hair. So no Drippings or whatnot. West Coast Fresh Coast.. Do the Most, Blaaaudadahhah
Run DMC, Kool Moe D, Ice T and artists like that from the "golden-Age of hip-hop" have always had my respect for what they did but ive never been a big fan of their actual music.
Honestly, i started listening to hip hop after seeing the article by Forbes of the highest earners. Blueprint is one of the first full hip hop album I listened to. Jay-z is still my favorite rapper, presently he might not be the greatest but he was back then for a long time. Whenever someone says that Jay Z ain't great I say respect the 600 million man.
Justin you my dude so I say this with respect. Speaking to the question about dopeness vs. success, you know the answer to that question bruh! You just doing your job in posing it but, you know dopeness trumps success and one does not equate to the other.
I definitely now how I feel, SF. I honestly think how successful an artist is definitely colors people's view of an artist though. I meet a lot of young people who quickly talk about how great Jay Z is or 50 cent but know very little about their music. I knew JFK was great before I knew anything about what he did or who he was, for example.
Heh up Justin. Dope and deep just like every week. I have never liked a song or an artist just because of success but I will go out of my way to listen to it more or be a bit more patient if I don't like it the 1st time I hear it.But there are plenty of Artists who's music I don't particularly like but who's hussle and game I admire.Master P is someone we have spoken about before but there's a lot of them.Flocka is 1,Nippsy is some one who's music and game I like.Hip Hop is a weird genre. You can float along for a long minute not really blowing up and something really bad can happen and boom your popular think 50 Cent,Troy Ave, or even Tupac (wasn't really a superstar until he had been shot and was behind bars) that sort of popularity is bizarre.I can't think of many examples outside of Hip Hop.Anyway another great BD.Take care.
I'm a big fan, love the Breakdown but just as a pointer you pronounced Edinburgh a bit wrong. It should be pronounced like edinburrah (burgh is the Scottish version of borough) but most locals just say edinbrah. Much love, you should do a breakdown of how the internet has completely changed how rappers break through and maintain their careers
Justin you should check out the swedish radio who has done AMAZING interviews with some of the greatest rappers alive, check out P3 Soul, the dude who does the interviews is the same guy who gave Kendrick the 2pac interview for TPAB
More life is successful but not dope, the hype and support of the fans create that image and portrays the released art as something "dope", that's how important having fans to have your back is.
Nipsey Hussle is an incredibly intelligent and self aware individual. When he speaks you wouldn't expect such wisdom and knowledge to come out of his mouth. Nipsey's music is cool but I respect his mind more.

Nipsey one of the slept on geniuses in the industry. REMEMBER KIDS, JUST BECAUSE BLOGS DON'T TALK ABOUT IT DOESN'T MEAN IT'S NOT HAPPENING
Master P represents that for me. Never cared for his music but admired his business acumen.
That's an honest answer. Thanks, SD!
It's crazy how big Jay-Z became. I was just watching his Dead Presidents video (love that song and vid) and here is a young ass Jay-Z spittin bars like "Rappers going broke, tryin' to keep up with me

@Boi Nipsey fully Awoke now.
RIP Nipsey Hussle. your legacy will live on.
CURREN$Y is another rapper that understood his market and how to make it a profitable lane
Facts.
Xavier Greaux I'm a huge Curren$y fan. In 2016 he dropped 12 mixtapes, and the quality for each one was very consistent. The man gave a full year of free music, so I will definitely be buying his next LP.
Wow, never heard of him before this comment..
Yeah they sleep on him😔
I wish you guys did a breakdown at some point at the mystery of Dr. Dre's enormous vault of unreleased music and the huge what if's of his career.
Good ass idea.
Thank you sir! I've read countless interviews and books from co-producers and former artists that worked with him. Everyone has a common theme that they recorded the greatest material of their career with Dr. Dre. Not to mention how Stat said Jimmy Iovine called them the greatest practice team of all time.
Dre said all of his unreleased were bad. so...
Dre is honest
rappers like drake release it as playlist.
For sure. His untitled unmastered would be impeccable.
Nipsey not just talk the talk he walked the walk he showed his dedication by example of being hands on to his city to help make a positive change. With Ownership Employment.. Education. Entrepreneurship. Donations to schools.
I️ liked Wiz Khalifa before he was famous it was always something about his art that was captivating.
Goin back to watch how Nipsey was grinding and make his way up, makes Victory Lap sound even more like a true victory lap. It got my vote for 2018 album of the Year

Bryan A its a balance
Bryan A I barely have success, love me
you're pretty good
Success can make people comfortable.
Nipsey music is the truth.. listen to his lyrics. Describing nipsey music as being cool is saying his mind is just cool. His music is great
fav nipsey album wat about bullets aint got no name 3.1 & mailbox money those are my fav
uzumaki boi I liked B.A.G.N.N. Vol. 1 & 2, The Marathon, and Crenshaw.
Great selections. Nipsey is somehow still underrated.
Respect to Nipsey Hu$$le keep getting it. Jay-Z continue elevating. Jay-Z is the artist of our dreams & nightmares. The presenter knows his job very well but can you please do a breakdown on the G.O.A.T tupac
Definitely doing at Pac GOAT piece. Probably around the release of the movie.
Shane Mulamuleli in my opinion the most underrated lyricist by some. I mean he really was amazing on that front to me.
Thank you for another dope video. I remember Nipsey posting flyers at the Subway at Crenshaw and Slauson. I had a copy of Slauson Boy Vol 1 from 2006 (cd's were lost or stolen)
Every Saturday I look forward to the Breakdown, keep it up Justin 💯
I'm still waiting on that Black Thought GOAT video!! Great job as usual though
Thanks, Jaleel!
that video would become my favorite as soon as it's posted.
I thought this last week Now i see it every where people agreeing
Not a huge tech-9 fan anymore but I've come to really respect the way he runs Strange especially love how he brings out and signs some old and new talent. ie Mayday or brotha lynch
Man! ¡MayDay! is one of favorite groups ever. I LOVE Take Me To You Leader and Klusterfuck. Thats one of the best signings in Strange history in my opinion. He does a great job of keeping the label diversified. Great point, TD.
HipHopDX 100% agree
HipHopDX Say MayDay a few times in Portland OR. one of the best performances Ces Cru was there too; another great signing

As always great job Justin, thank you for those two stories and the work you do every week.
Thanks sam! I don't think you're wrong about 50's album trajectory. GRODT is such a great project. Same for the first half of the Massacre. I do love War Angel still, but nothings been the same. And at the same time, his profile is bigger than ever.

what's the background sound that's on while Hunte talks ? I love the instrumental!
Nipsey is the truth!
R.I.P Nipsey, an inspiration to us all

OH I can't wait for the next video. Who do we respect more as a person rather than their art, and who do we appreciate their art more than who they are. DAMN! I cannot wait (+)
always great to log into youtube have a coffee or some food and let you give us the #BREAKDOWN - keep them coming.close to 200k SUBS 198,124
This is a dope breakdown. I've been sleeping on nipsey and I will definitely check out his projects as a result of his entrepreneurial zeal which you've hi-lighted here! Thanks HipHopDX. Btw where do I get a record wallpaper like that one?! I need that in my life
awesome segment. I feel inspired!!!!
Man that's 90% of ppl!! LOL!
Every time there's a new artist or song on the radio or playing in the club no one changes the station or stop dancing because that rapper is talking about BS. Ppl listen to the beat and keep it moving.
True.
R.i.paradise . Time to sleep king.
“I got to this paper, no industry favors, sticking to they soul so they tell me I’m their favorite” NIP HU$$LE THA GREAT 🏁TMC🏁 RIP Homie 🙏🏾
@HiphopDX Yo when u say the brother had a jerry curl. If you did some research or knew what ethnic background, brother You'll already know that's his Natural Hair. So no Drippings or whatnot. West Coast Fresh Coast.. Do the Most, Blaaaudadahhah
Adam Barney that's fair. I replied to a similar comment earlier. My mistake.
Run DMC, Kool Moe D, Ice T and artists like that from the "golden-Age of hip-hop" have always had my respect for what they did but ive never been a big fan of their actual music.
This series just keeps getting better
R.I.P King Nip
I listen to all 12:00 minutes of this song at least a few times a week. Classic 🏁VL🏁A$I🏁TMC🏁
its just like how quik described kanye.. he is only successful because his celebrity supersedes his talent now
I really like this video great job. keep up the great work, fam.
Breakdown Slim Jesus, the rap messiah
Honestly, i started listening to hip hop after seeing the article by Forbes of the highest earners.
Blueprint is one of the first full hip hop album I listened to. Jay-z is still my favorite rapper, presently he might not be the greatest but he was back then for a long time.
Whenever someone says that Jay Z ain't great I say respect the 600 million man.
Thanks for being honest, Info Giant. That's a great example.
it is what it is
Info Giant kinda weird you started listing to a genre of music based off how much money artists make.
Darnell Jackson 😅😂😅
I always like the art first. I don't follow artist based on their success.
Thanks Pat.
Nipsey is the new age Jay-Z everybody wants to be him but he is the only one who is really doing it
No Big u is a jay Z Nip was like TuPac Nip the Tiny Loc
Justin you should check out the swedish radio who has done AMAZING interviews with some of the greatest rappers alive, check out P3 Soul, the dude who does the interviews is the same guy who gave Kendrick the 2pac interview for TPAB
WE NEED MORE TUPAC!!!!
I Provide Useless Statistics for Your Pleasure OVER RATED 😪
Seriously, this guy has video blogging down. This shit is really informative. Shouts out to HiphopDX
Nipsey Hussle consistently changes the game, but people won't realize it until everyone else does what he's been on...
I want some WakaVodka 😂😂😂
Breakdown Joey Badass
GoingFull Saiyan coming next Saturday
great interview ..the public consumes what's given to them..but they cherish it when it's earned
RIP Nipsey
More life is successful but not dope, the hype and support of the fans create that image and portrays the released art as something "dope", that's how important having fans to have your back is.
Solid example. Thanks Geo.
