Arranger's Words: What a beautiful song full of authentic female sensitivity. Syncopated songs like this are always a little trickier to arrange since the notes are either in triplets or the whole song is in a signature other than the "easy" 4/4. First, I went with a faster chord progression with a chord change per bar, instead of the chord change per two bars of the original. This along with the defined bassline help boosting the energy of the arrangement. Since it's a ballad song though, I have chosen some of my chord connections to be weaker in order to drive the listener a bit further away and compensate for the heavy beat. In order to achieve that in a nice way, I've also changed the first chord from BbM7 to Dm which is chord I to the key and progressed quite different than the original which is what gives it the sensitive yet serious feeling. Although there is no much dance performance in the music video, I was still in mood for a nice drop but at the same I wanted to keep the romantic yet mysterious feel of the original song. Thus the detuned sounds on the drop that emphasize the mystery. I really liked the rap part more emphasized so I intentionally displaced the second verse by half a beat, which means what it used to be on beat became off beat and the words of the rap part sound like "hitting" the bassline. The displacement is removed by stretching the last syllable before the second chorus. [JUN]
