Great advice on softening up on rod stiffness! So many people talk about using telephone poles for flipping and locking their drag down. If a bass has a one-ounce sinker in it's mouth when you rip that broomstick, it's exactly like you said, that weight will BANG that lower jaw open (maybe why we always have them hooked in the top???) stopping the hook point from hitting that lower jaw, causing us to only hook up when the point is upwards! There's no way to know which way that point will be after he inhales it, so enough power to plant that point, and cut the grass immediately near the fish's mouth, is all we need!! Let the pull of the rod and turn of the reel get him out!

I can't say I ever thought about always pitching back to the same place I just got a fish from. I am sure I have done it from time to time, but now I'll try to make it a regular practice after catching a fish..

Thanks Bob! Quick question.. When assessing a big expanse of vegetation with pads, how much do you think about deeper water or proximity to it in selecting your targets?

I think having deeper water nearby or a slight depression can be a big deal. The slight depressions on a large flat are super important. Usually they don’t show up on a map so if you discover them in a large grass flat you’ll usually have those fish to yourself.

My man… you have to practice keeping them vertical when lipping them. You’re turning their heads straight and letting their jaws carry the body weight.

So many guys do this not meaning to, hey just don't think "Hey! That's gotta hurt!"

Easy on those jaw muscles!!! Keep em vertical when lipping, or use two hands to hold the weight!!! We all can do better, and we need to, now more than ever before!
