Your “Best Strategy” is good, but not actually the best. You say that the extremes is the best, for example 9+1, but I say the opposite. I would do 6+4. In the example you gave, you had 6 and 4 at the end, giving you 6 (5/36), 4 (3/36) and 10 (3/36), giving you a total chance of 11/36 of staying in the game. My strategy left me with 7 2 and 1, giving me 2 (1/36), 3(2/36), 7(6/36), 8 (5/36), 9 (4/36), and 10 (3/36), for a total of 21/36, almost double the odds of yours. To anyone who doesn’t understand what my strategy is, it is to pick the combination in which the lowest number you put down is as high as possible. For example 6 and 4 is better than 9 and 1 because 4 is higher than 1.

I played something similar to this with my grandparents. It was a similar style box but there were 4 sides for 4 players. The way you would put the numbers down would be any +, -, /, or * between the dice.
idea for another way to play this game ( a bit weird ) you can continue playing after you roll something more or less than the remaining numbers, and the amount of rolls you have is your score. BUT if you roll over 13 times, you lose. also, the lower the score the better still applies

First time seeing this game it looks fun but may i ask why the game called shut the box? I thought at first because of the name, if you win a game the box is gonna slowly close or smth (sounds stupid but you get the idea)
Ehhh maybe makes the game longer but idrk if it would make it too much harder. I do think it would be hard to roll a 10, 11, and 12 so maybe that would make it harder than 9
