For me it was this nice old dude on the train! I was doodling on my phone and I noticed he was drawing something too so I kind of tried to sneak a peek at what he was drawing. I thought he didn’t notice me, but before I got off the train, he tapped me on the shoulder and gave me the drawing he did! It made me so happy and I still have it taped to my wall👌

One person I can't forget when I went to Japan last year was a girl on the train. I was watching afro dance videos on youtube from my phone and she was really interested in what I was watching and started watching it with me. I thought it was the cutest thing ever! She couldn't hear the music because I had headphones on but she literally watched like 6 videos with me. She didn't know English but I always think about her and think about how cool it would've been if we became friends. We never said a word to each other though. She just sat closer to me and watched with me.

The one Japanese person I will never forget is from the month i stayed in Tokyo in 2017. I went to a bar in Ikebukuro and sat in one of the quiet corners when a group of guys came in and sat next to me. I originally kept to myself, but decided to try and socialize a bit and after a while, we got on the subject of Pokemon. We compared the names of Pokemon between Japan and America, with me laughing every time they spoke the names after me.
One guy (who was very drunk at the time) leaned over and said "I will never forget this. I will always remember this." I looked at his friends and said, "He's gonna forget me in the morning, isn't he?" starting another round of hysterical laughter.

Boy do I have stories. I lived on the countryside about 2 hours from Tokyo for a year and I guess not a lot of foreiners come there. It was realy rural and I was renting a flat privately from an old lady and became very good friends with my neighbours.
But one woman in particular stands out. It was when I arrived to Japan in October 2014 I landed in Tokyo to then take the train out to my home station to meet my landlady and we had set a time so that I had plenty of time to get out there. However when we entered Japan there was a typhoon and the plane couldn't land for another two hours after schedule and the Narita express wasn't running as intended. It was chaos. I also didn't have a cellphone with me as I intended to get one at a later date.
After I arrive more than 2 hours after intended meetup time I was exhausted. And it was pouring down so I was like a drowned rat, soaked to my bones. I stood outside the station for 45 minutes hoping my landlady would try to come pick me up anyway but to no avail and I broke down crying. I had a phone number to my landlady but it was scribbled on a paper that was in my backpocket falling apart, but I couldnt contact her anyway. Also worth noting is that I knew ZERO Japanese at this time and was fresh out of high school with social anxiety. As I was panicing and crying I felt an umbrella come over my head and a small middle aged lady (in her late 50s) patted my back trying to comfort me. I politely declined the umbrella as I was already soaked so it was no use. She insisted and asked me in very slow english what was wrong. I tried to explain and turns out she knew my landlady and not only offered to call her but also offered to drive me to my flat. I started bawling again and thanked her before we got into her car and drove over to my landlady's house as I was renting the flat upstairs from where she lived. She offered a bath and some soup and she regularly came to check up on me as I lived there and we still send christmas cards to each other.

on my last trip in japan i was taking a breather in ueno park, and this 70 old grandpa came and sit next to me on the bench and started convo with a phrase "its a hot day, right" , it took me a few seconds to realize that he was speaking to me. I’ll never forget the beautiful Japanese girl in a business suit on my train ride towards Sanrio puroland. . I noticed someone staring or glancing in my direction but usually I always tend to overthink these situations like “no way they’re staring at me, Probably just looking at the scenery behind me in the train.” Later on my mother pointed out that a “pretty girl” keeps looking at me. Which confirmed my thoughts of this same women looking at me. For the next 30 minutes I would catch her looking and we would make eye contact, once in a while. It was my second to last day in japan, but the fact that she probably took “interest” in me (so I hoped) really made me happy. We both departed the train at the Keio-Tama-center station. 😭😭😭.

I entered a jazz bar one night in Kyoto. While drinking a scotch on the rocks, I was enjoying the music when a 50-year old beautiful japanese woman approached me and asked me if I sang jazz. I said "a little bit" then she showed me her binder full of jazz songs with musical score and said I should sing on the stage. She was really warm and approachable so even if I was shy, I said yes. She told me details about her life and it feels like she's a stranger I was always meant to meet. :)

My most memorable person was the gentleman who was assisting to park cars. My girlfriend and I were in Narita and were going to a big event at a temple and this guy was in a crisp military-esque uniform, he stayed at attention the whole day and never hesitated with his job. He also bowed to each car as they left. It may seem silly but coming from the US where our work ethic is questionable at best it impressed me greatly. He wasn't slouching or dawdling and remained professional the whole day. Even a road crew working on the side of the highway...all squared away in uniforms and all working. When you see a work crew here it is way too often one guy working, three watching, and one leaning on a "slow" sign.
Everyone I met there was so polite and helpful I was actually taken aback. Even the stockboy at the supermarket stopped what he was doing to find a particular sauce for us. I mean he ran to find and retrieve it! We just asked where it was.
Japan really impressed me as having a wonderful populace on the whole. I often wonder if I would think different if I lived there but I know it is difficult for a foreigner to find meaningful work.

This was really an awesome topic. I've had so many experiences the two times I was stationed in Okinawa, but what stands out to me the most was my trip to Tokyo way back in Christmas of '83. This is long, so Gomenasai!
I went out to a club and meet a girl on the last dance of the night. I later saw her again as I was two blocks down the street waiting for a cab to pick me up. Cabs had been passing me by for about 15min. She asked how long I had been waiting. She then hailed the very next cab. I was surprised it stopped. She offered it to me, but I declined. She explained it was alright and for me to get in. I told her I cannot as it's not my way. She said if I don't take this cab it might be a long time before someone stops for me. (In broken English) I got in and then asked her to share the cab since it's late. She and the cab driver had rude words, but he said, OK

Two days or so before flying back from Tokyo after my 10-day tour of Japan, I used a Hello Kitty bag I had bought as a souvenir for my mum for carrying small everyday items with me (since I had already pre-packed my rucksack with a lot of other souvenirs). An old man approached me asking (in English) whether he could take a photo of me because he thought it was funny for an adult person to carry a Hello Kitty bag in public. When I responded in Japanese, we had a chat, and he told me about his trip to Germany where I live. I thought Japanese people were rather reserved but this was definitely a counter-example.

Florence Lang. She lived most her life, married in US, and settled on our area. We were fortunate enough to get a Toyota Plant in our area and, of course, very one wanted to impress. They were running ads in the local paper and getting the language wrong. Even though she was recently widowed she went to the city administration and the papers and offered her services to help them get the nuances of Japanese right. She attended our church and was always kind, but she would also tell you like it is. She gave me some video equipment and I still have it to this day. Florence was a very sweet soul.

My story is a bit different and social media based.
One day last year I was feeling very down and commented online about it. I immediately received a reply asking "If I would like to talk?" from a Japanese girl. We DM'd each other that evening and talked things out, which made me feel so much better. We are now friends and message each other about so many different topics and life in general. Another Japanese girl and I chat often. We also work on our English and Japanese language skills. Both are so nice and friendly.
Cannot wait to meet them; one lives in Tokyo and the other Osaka.

When I studied abroad back in 2012-2013, I was pretty cautious about making Japanese friends. I know all about the Honne and Tanne social masks so I chose my friends carefully. Luckily, I did make quite a few dear friends while I was there who went through the trouble of celebrating my birthday with me or inviting them over for dinner at my place. However, the one who stands out the most is my bestie, Keiko. She and I hung out together the most and I’ve kept in contact with since I left Japan.
Lately, she has been consumed by her work as a manga artist and just had her first child last year. I’ve been keeping busy as well launching my own career as a storyboard artist. Although, whenever I miss her, I watch the “Uta no Princesama” series and play the rhythm game. Since she’s the one who introduced me to it, I’m always reminded of her.

I remember I did a cold weather training evolution near mt Fuji near Gotemba. I met a JSDF member named Ryuuji. The first time we met was at a military styled "mixer" where we got to meet our occupational counterparts. I was a tow gunner and he was the first person to offer me a drink. We got along really well drinking and told me about all the alcohols from different places around japan. The reason I really remember him is because he invited me to a bath which I thought was odd but I chalked it up to cultural differences and told him i had work to do. But he was still really courteous and accommodating. He would invite the guys in my platoon to his tent and with his superiors and other unit members would be really friendly and cook us food and entertain us. We ended up giving them gifts of our issued gear that ended us getting in trouble but in the end we pay for the gear anyways so... Fuck it. Still pretty cool guys 10/10 would give free shit to him again.

I had a few memorable people, first being when my sister and I had landed and came from the metro and had no clue where our hostel was located. There was this small group of people, a mom, dad, little daughter and other adults and I looked kind of distressed their way and they looked back talking with each other before I decided to ask them if they knew which way we had to go and they proceeded to walk us to it, 20 full minutes!! We were so grateful and they were very kind. Later our trip we met a really kind girl in a shop in shibuya who was very interested in us and asked us where we were from and she was soooo kind and told us where she’s from and hoped we would return. We also had several positive encounters with elderly people which we thought wouldn’t happen! I was afraid that they would frown up us foreigners but for example in Osaka they were the only ones that were kind to us! We had people smiling at us, nodding at us even a woman asking us how we were and where we were from and to be careful in the heat x our trip isn’t done yet but those were some really nice ones

OMG the one Japanese I will never be able to forget... so my husband and I were in Tokyo for the night and we thought it would be fun to visit an “adult shop” lol so there we are, everything’s all good, we are laughing at some of the strange things we see (panties for dudes, strange cosplays, etc.) and then all of a sudden I notice this Japanese man in a face mask and a bucket hat just staring at me. No big deal, he’s probably curious why there’s a foreigner in an adult shop, so my husband and I just mind our own business going down the different isles. And I realize every isle we go to, the bucket hat guy is there just lurking and following us around. Then, I split up from my husband to look at some tv that was mounted to a fence-like rack, and I see the bucket hat guy is on the other side of the rack looking at me!!! So I’m like “okay, this dude is creepy let’s go on to another floor” so my husband and I take the elevator and we think that’s the end of the story but then the elevator doors open and we see none other than our bucket hat clad stalker! He must have taken the stairs to get there before we did. 😱 Needless to say, I’ve had enough and my husband and I leave the shop and prayed to the lord that the bucket hat guy wouldn’t follow us to our hotel. He did not! 😂

I had no umbrella but then the person behind me kind of stepped forward and leaned their umbrella so that it covered me :,) I didn’t even turn around so I don’t even remember their appearance, but it kinda stuck to me

Uggggh..... hard to decide lol, a handful that I can't forget... so let's go with one that I feel most regret over (you'll see what I mean). So on JR ride out of Shingu, there was a point in time when there were two crew members in our car (I was with bro and SIL) checking tickets (not sure how they decide who to check because I don't recall them checking everyone, and I am quite certain the couple across from me had gotten on at same stop. Maybe I remembered wrong idk). The one I will speak of bypassed my bro and SIL (who were sitting in front of me) and stopped at me. Passed over my ticket and pass (for whatever reason I thought I needed to hand my pass too), and the guy started saying all this stuff in Japanese... when he finally stopped talking, I said.. "uhhh... English?" ^^; .... he then asked me if I spoke Japanese xD Stupid me just HAD to say no (I know a little bit of basics) so I missed an opportunity to flirt (which would be limited to calling him kawaii lol) and/or at least make him happy that I at least took the effort to learn a bit..
Anywho, the guy then explained to me in English that there was a section of the ride that wasn't covered by the pass. Somehow it didn't click in my head that I was supposed to pay him at this point... so I'm just blankly staring around and oddly he didn't ask for payment before moving up to my bro and SIL who paid him. My bro then asked me if I had money and I didn't think I did (my brain wasn't with me because I had the money, just for whatever reason I thought I had it in my head that I had to pay in exact change [which I didn't]) so he handed me a bill which I passed on to the guy. This is where it gets adorably funny.. after getting my change and ticket printout, went back to facing forward when suddenly I heard the guy making a commotion with a flurry of apologies and not sure what else (because it was all in Japanese). I look over, and he was right in front of the couple on the other side so I couldn't see what happened until he stepped over a bit to the side revealing... that the bill I had handed him was now sitting in the lap of the gentleman in the aisle seat. With the combination of the guy apologizing so profusely and the gentleman (older guy, maybe 60s) looking so serious with his arms dangling on his sides, I couldn't help but crack up a bit (not sure if he heard me, since I mostly stifled it after a snort).
Still kicking myself for cutting what could have been a nice conversation short... and not using what little I knew in general (kept defaulting to English or chickening out). Oh well... going to make an effort next time I visit o-o

There was pink haired seller girl who tried to flirt with me or something :D She smiled at me all the time and was sitting on her cash desk looking at me very curiously and yeah...It was confusing but funny :D Even when I went to the cash desk, bought the merch and leave, she was waving to me and smiled so much

The clerks in American shoe stores used to put them on your feet, but I don’t think they do it as much because they’re afraid of some sort of lawsuit... and because we don’t really have non-sports shoe stores anymore. There are a few mom and pop shops hanging in there, and Payless is coming out of bankruptcy, but they’re a dying breed.

It was about 4 AM at Ueno-Inaricho, we are waiting for the traffic light to turn green even though there is literally no cars around. I don't want to be this foreigner breaking the rules :) Then, an old man, probably on his late 50's early 60's from the other side of the road cross the street and told as Go go go go go while he is crossing. Telling us nicely that we can cross and that the traffic light will not going to turn green any time soon. Yeah, we are really waiting there for quite some time. Thanks old man for helping us break the law :D He's quite a cool old man. Another old man I remember is from Hachiko shrine. He is there to have your picture taken for free using your camera/phone. Wish I could have taken a picture with him.

I had a business trip to Germany last summer, and went to Deutsche Oper Berlin by myself during the stay and I met a German lady, Heike, sitting by my seat. We talked before, during the intermission, and after the opera quit a long time without disclosing any thing personal except our first names. At the end of the long conversation, I asked her to remember a short Japanese idiom, ichi-go ichi-e.
