    In my experience toxic students usually get bored and get rid of themselves.

    Gyms that don't clearly define and protect their etiquette/culture are bound to fail or at least produce lackluster students.

      I just recently went to a gym where the instructor didn’t even have a gi teaching class. Everyone was super tough and dedicated.

    It would be terrible to "be removed" from an academy. That would most likely mean a problem was clearly communicated to me previously, and I failed to correct the issue. That would truly suck, and if a person didn't learn from that...

    In my opinion mat enforcers are the best way to deal with the hot heads and such. I’m a product of this, I came in a little hot headed and after the higher belts put it on me and bumped me down a notch, it helped cool me off a little and not spaz as much and just overall helped me get comfortable with not going 100% all the time and get more technical. It sucks but it’s kind of a necessary evil. It’s happened to some other guys and after they did a complete 180, they went from being dreaded to great training partners and some just left. People might not agree with me but this is just my opinion

    Very interesting and I agree with the idea. How does the month work? Is this like a free trial period for them? Does this effect sign ups or do you experience difficulty getting people in the door?

    • @ChrisMatakas
      @ChrisMatakas  5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Great question. The expectation is that it will work out for both the school and the student so it rarely becomes an issue. We never present the first month as a time where the student needs to be on pins and needles, it's more of a mutual observation period with latitude. For us, we found it best to offer an intro special that includes no commitment, the first month at a reduced rate, and a lightweight Gi that can get the student on the mat. So far, we haven't found that is has been a barrier to entry for students, nor a reason for students not to stay past the initial month.

    I’m in a situation where I’m loyal to my gym I’ve been apart since I was 13. And been on and off until last year, last year I took it serious trained consistently, went to a tournament gi and won gold. And a month or 2 goes by and I notice people are getting promoted stripes and belts. Getting promoted belts without competing and I wasn’t getting noticed until I asked when I would get promoted. Only then I got promoted 2 stripes at once. And I honestly thought I was going to get my blue belt. Giving the years I’ve been with them and only them and also I competed and won gold and I do very well against the blue belts amongst me, recently I’ve stopped doing the gi as much and focused on no gi because I was preparing for a fight, which I lost to a great wrestler..And there’s some guy from another state. Who comes to train for only a few months at a time got promoted to blue belt from my gym….
    Like I said I don’t know what to think would like some opinions maybe I’m being a baby about it or maybe I should leave but like I said I am loyal to this gym and don’t want to leave but I am just confused.

    What about a student who is good with students, treats every student while rolling with respect, has never injured anyone, but is frowned upon because he brings up toxic stuff in the gym?

    Lot of new people don’t know what the proper behavior is. Me included. I remember muscling a purple belt as a new white belt years ago. He let me do it.
    However, in our next roll, he absolutely demolished me. 😂 I think he was pissed off.
    We have a gym cancer now at our gym, 18yo, 250lb, and super aggressive white belt.
    I was talking to my professor about him. He said I should crush him. 😂

  • @johncasarino5627
    @johncasarino5627 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    The place I went to championed their gym cancer as like some eccentric beloved pet or some shit. He was too young to be in the adults class but he had gone through immature puberty and was freaking huge at under 15 years so we had to train with him. He had it in for me for no reason and everytime he rocked up I knew it was gonna be a shit time, he'd roll like a dick, throw older guys around and if he didn't like you when doing drills he would be completely non cooperative, have his head down and do everything sloppily. But the people who ran it were all fond of him even though he ruined the place for many newcomers. You could tell he was some spoilt rich kid with zero empathy, no one put him in his place they just let him rot the place.

    I have only had to kick 4 out in the 10 years I've been teaching. Two were relationship issues (I highly discourage) one was the wrestler guy hurting ppl you spoke of and one had mental issues.

    • @hamburgaremedost
      @hamburgaremedost 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      What kind of relationship issues and why do you highly discourage relationships in gyms?

    • @dragonballjiujitsu
      @dragonballjiujitsu 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@hamburgaremedost Relationships that form inside the gym almost always end in taking at least 2-3 people out. Girl comes in, guy likes, they start dating, guy gets pissed when she trains with someone else. 3 ppl get kicked out or leave. I've seen it happen probably 50-70 times in the 22 years I've been training BJJ and over 12 schools. Nothing good EVER comes from it.
      Another one is the gym whore who tries to bang every guy or girl there. I've seen one 10-15 times. It can wipe out 50% of the gym in a few months.
      Anyone who has run a school more than a few years will know exactly what I'm talking about.
