HI, when your carriage moves at the end of loading the paper it sounds like I would expect a normal inkjet to sound with a "hushedness" whereas when my HP DJ 500 42" prints or the carriage moves it makes a "judder". The print quality seems to fine if not a little blurry on say text on plain papers..... I just assumed it was what it was supposed to sound like but I suspect compared to yours not! Any ideas on why that might be?
Looking at the user manual for the DesignJet 500 it says that it can cope with HP Matte Film of 5 mil (198g/m2), HP High-Gloss Photo Paper of 8 mil (207g/m2), HP Clear Film of 4 mil (174g/m2), HP Banners with Tyvek of 10 mil (140g/m2), HP Colorfast Adhesive Vinyl 10mil (140g/m2), and finally HP Studio Canvas of 20mil (368g/m2) so given this, there is a chance it can work with 4ml plastic but it doesn't provide any clarity on this. You'll have to try it and see I think, and report back!
@@HPPlotter thanks for replying. I have the chance to bid on one in an auction. Sounds like it’s worth trying for as I’m sure it will print on rolled vinyl. I’ll give it a bid. If I get it I’ll definitely try it. Thanks!
@@TheBaldFatGuy1 Are you in the UK? Bid on the 510 possibly but the 500 is really old - 20 years old in fact. Email sales@hpplotter.co.uk for second-hand machines - at least we offer a warranty - or just don't pay over £250 for one. Ask to see it working. Check if printheads are all working as this will cost you as much as a full set of inks if they aren't.
Hi David - you can use most types of paper/media on the DesignJet 500 printer - Paper (plain, inkjet, coated, heavyweight coated, high-gloss, semi-gloss, natural tracing, photo), Clear film, Matte film. It uses dye-based colour inks so for photos/canvas be aware that the prints will fade over time and of course some canvas weights won't go through the printer...plus you'd need to disengage the cutter if you are opting to print on canvas otherwise you'll burn the motor out as it's not designed for use with heavyweight canvas. Also a good point to note is that the DJ 500 isn't really designed as a graphics printer although it can print graphics.
Yes but you specifically need to use media suitable for dye/water-based inks for the DJ500/510. Also watch your weights of media. If you're based in the UK please email consumables@hpplotter.co.uk and let us know the width of paper needed e.g. 24" A1 media - any special qualities needed e.g. needs to be self adhesive and check the spec of your printer which will tell you the maximum weight of media you can use and provide us with this info too (we can find this out for you if necessary) and then we'll send you a few vinyl selections to choose from!
