Yep....68 also....I had a 1973 triumph stag v8 .....I would put the top down and drive around with this playing on the cassette player.....thought I was so cool driving a car that bond drove in DAF only his was yellow.
Same, almost 68. This was *the* album of the golden summer of 1979 in Kenai, Alaska, working in the salmon canneries with workmates from all over the world.
I'm 58 and thanks to the previous posters for suddenly, and briefly, making me feel young. 😊 This was one of the first ( of 12) non 8track albums I purchased for a penny from Columbia House in 1979/80
Stellar job on this one. No serious complaints on your takes. I appreciate “Lord Is It Mine” a little more than you, but the difference between good and great is not a vast chasm in this instance. This was required listening back in the 8 track days.
100% support you and the channel while Andy's on sabbatical. Love that album too! I sometimes think Supertramp doesn't get quite the respect they deserve.
Andy & Alex, I have watched a LOT of music reaction channels, and I have found that some reactors are good at expounding on the emotional aspects of the music, and some are good at expounding upon the technical. The reason I always keep coming back to you guys is that you are the one channel I have found that is EXCELLENT AT BOTH. Great job holding down the fort, Alex. Andy, take care, and I look forward to your return when you're ready.
This channel put me onto Supertramp, and they have since become one of my favorite bands. I really appreciate that it's not just a one and done reaction, but actual opinions are formed, presented and held on to.
I agree with you about "Child Of Vision". I consider it iconic since it is one of my favorite Supertramp songs period. I found the rest of his analysis spot on and totally agree with him.
This is a great album. I bought it in 1982. If you'd like to know my first album I bought with money from a real job was: Ray Charles..,...Ain't that Love from 20 years earlier 1962. The year many of the commenters were born. I was 17. My first concert was Ray Charles. Best concert ever. And I've been to a lot of concerts. Thank you for liking my comment. Alex, you're very good, you don't need Andy, ......just kidding you guys are great. Look forward to Andy returning to the new freedom shack.
Hey Alex! Thank you for "holding down the fort" while Andy takes a break. And, I'm excited to hear your thoughts on each of the Supertramp's songs on "Breakfast in America".
Watching you and Andy listen to “Goodbye Stranger” is one of my favorite musical reactions OF ALL TIME. After you check out the lyrics and come back, the reaction is priceless. S-tier reaction.
This album along with Tom Petty's "Damn The Torpedoes" are my 2 favorites albums. I would like to see you do more of these from albums that you listen to on Patreon.
This was great. One of the "shortcomings" of reacting to songs is that the whole of a great album can be lost or hard to discover. A great album elevates all the songs, which have to be obviously great to begin with. Breakfast in America is a great album. One of my favorite nighttime driving albums of all time.
Crime of the Century, Crisis What Crisis?, Even in the Quietest Moments, and Breakfast in America...are 4 amazing albums done in a row....with not a boring song between the 4 of them.
I love 3 of those albums, but for some reason I can't get into Crisis? What Crisis? Not even one song. I listened through it at least 3 or 4 times and nothing. I may attempt another try at some point
Love them all, but have Even in the Quietest Moments on my phone. Listen to it at least once a week ❤❤❤❤ phenomenal musicians who are tragically underrated
Still have my $7.50 ticket stub from Supertramp 1977 "Even In The Quietest Moments" tour. I was one of only twelve attending arena rock show - they performed full set-list and encored us with six songs from *unreleased* album *"Breakfast In America"* Total Professionals!
Loved this album and bought it when it came out. I was in junior high and played it over and over. Gone Hollywood is my favorite, but Goodbye Stranger is a close second.
Really appreciate the thoughtfulness you (and Andy) have approached what is "old" music from your youthful perspective as music is my favorite art form and means of human expression. Also, you are the king of metaphors and analogies Alex, so hope you get to developing a list of your all-time best to share on the channel! 😄
This is one of the few channels as a 62 yr old female..iv followed from pretty much the beginning and will continue to do so..Just play more Bowie please !❤ Shout out from Australia 🎉
Listening to this album come through the radio back in the day when it was released, compared to other stuff coming through the radio at that time, really set it apart. It sounded "different". It had a clarity and dimension to it that made it stand apart.
Goodbye Stranger is my favorite on the album too. The guitar solo at the end is one of my favorites of all time because of how well it fits the song. Its a travesty that a lot of radio stations would fade the song out before the solo even starts!
When this vinyl album was released, my brother and I listened while racing AFX slotcars . It's a timeless classic... and the lyrics make sense as you age. It's like a fine wine ... haha !! S tier tracks.
Always great to see Supertramp get the love they deserve. Such a talented band. With fantastic list of hits and songs. Why they aren't in the Rock and Roll HoF is beyond me??
I have been following Andy , and then the two of you, since the beginning, and in many ways your musical journey mirrors my own back in the late 60s/early 70s. First it was all guitar solos and bombastic drums- MOUNTAIN, BLACK SABBATH, DEEP PURPLE, YARDBIRDS, THE WHO, STEPPENWOLF. T Then the proggy groups captured my attention, with new instruments and complex arrangements like Yes, Pink Floyd, ELP , Supertramp, Jethro Tull. Finally the folk rock and singer songwriters forced their way into my consciousness, including the Women of various genres. IMHO, discovering new types of music rewires our brain and allows us to appreciate the range of the human musical experience. It was an honor to accompany you guys on your journey.
To me it almost sounds too personal, like something he should have told his wife or his therapist or his priest. It's a beautiful song, don't get me wrong. But it feels uncomfortably personal.
@@sourisvoleur4854 I don't see it that way. The message I get is that sometimes when we find ourselves alone and in pain, such as after the loss of a loved one, or a broken relationship, that is a time we can reflect.
What a great breakdown of this album! Its been a long time since I listened to it. My ex husband bought it and played it non stop. When we divorced a couple of years later, he took it with him. I did not feel I ever wanted to hear it again, but now your review has made me interested to hear it again. Hope both of you have a great day!
Such a thoughtful take, Alex! I didn't agree entirely [love "Lord is it mine" for the vocal and sax] but think you got to the essence of the album really well.
Iconic---EVERY SONG is Great. Child of Vision is something I can listen to over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over.... Top 10 Favorite Album of all time for me.
I had completely forgotten about Supertramp until I discovered your channel many years ago. Thanks for helping me rediscover these amazing bands from my junior high years. And thanks for listening to and finally appreciating the best music of all time- 80’s alternative/new wave!
After I bought this album, it spent more than a year in my cassette deck in my car without being changed. Amazing! A terrific album from a terrific band.
The album still feels fresh to me even after all these years. Sometimes I hear a song from this album and realize how young I was and where I was working when I used to hear it play in the background and I just took it for granted because so much music was good back then but this is special.
David Bowie's Station to Station from 1976, produced by the great Brian Eno from early Roxy Music which you have just recently heard, is another incredible flowing album like this, and it closes with a spectacular banger in "Stay." You have only heard a couple songs out of context. But it needs the full listen, to really get what Bowie and Eno did here together.
I was the first to put this album on in my high school radio station. I cracked the cellophane, put it on side one, song one and let it go. I only paused to turn the album over. I was HOOKED FOR LIFE! Even Pink Floyd and Queen would generally take a couple listens before loving either. This one, EVERY SONG, first listen!!!!
I bought this album when it came out on a whim as birthday gift for a friend. Out of the blue it became a favorite and was so good that I am still listening to it.
Alex, super job with your enthusiasm describing their super high caliber prog rock. Loneliness, monotony themes mixed with banging S tier tunes. Andy 🙏 for solid recovery. You brought a 71 year guy back to relive ‘79 memories.🎶🎼🎵
What great music knowledge and appreciation! I'm 65 years old and this and so many other talented artists is what we would hear on the radio when I was in high school. Thanks Alex for carrying the torch.
I am a Brazilian that loves Supertramp. Do you know a song called Travelled from their second album Indelibily stamped? That is the best song of them for me.
I'm glad to see you back at it, and my thoughts are with you AND Andy...I know he's dealing with life and admire his honesty and prioritization of dealing with it had on! As for this album...I agree, it's a fantastic album... the album cover is iconic too, and there is an eerie coincidence regarding the view of the Manhattan skyline and waterfront and the sad 9-11 incident etched into the cover art. One of my favorite albums from this era, it is one of their 2 best... with "Crime of the Century" just a tad more iconic for me. I know Roger gets a lot of the notoriety for his songs and vocals, but it wouldn't be the same group without Rick's equally compelling vocal expressiveness he always brings to his songs. A great group...a huge oversight not putting them in the R&R HOF! Thanks for a great review!
Very influential album for me. Supertramp had such a unique sound that stood out in the 70's. Every song fuses the album and is brilliant even to this day. This album has stood the test of time. I'd love to hear current artists/bands come up with this type of creativity. Glad you enjoyed, keep discovering great music guys and take care Andy!
I wore this album out when it came out. The production and clarity of instruments is amazing. I had a very nice stereo system at the time and really appreciated this album with volume up
I'm happy to see you greatly appreciate this album! After a few vinyl albums, this album was the first cassette tape I ever owned. Which meant I could go portable with it, playing on my Sony Walkman. And listening to music on the go was a 'game changer' for that 14 year old boy.
Good ranking Alex! Really can't disagree with any of it. This album was a masterpiece. Crime of the Century is the tops for me, but this is my solid #3 (Even in The Quietest is #2). I never get tired of the opening line of the title track!
Good album review! I like the way you crafted / framed your shot here, with black / white down the middle for your background... Keep up the good work!
So glad you came back to this album. I was 19 when it was released and it is my favorite album of all time. I would just crank it up in the car, sounds incredible.
That was a great breakdown Alex, the only difference I had with your analyzing was that I believe Child of Vision also is an S-tier song...just sublime. That said, as much as I have cherished this album since its release...I believe Crime of the Century is just such the greater album. How is it not higher on the prog list than BIA? Could it be that there was so much lesser competition (distraction vying for that all mighty music feeding dollar) in 79 than there was in 74...when we were basically saturated with so much more delicious ear candy?
Goodbye Stranger is my favorite on this album too! The vocals and lyrics are amazing. But I have to say the keyboards on this song are just perfect and elevate this song so much. Then you get smacked upside the head with an amazing guitar solo at the end. This song is brilliant.
The diversity of music on the channel is remarkable. When you guys did Dave Brubecks "Take Five" I was totally sold. I hope everything works out for you guys. Cheers and take care 🍺
This was a GREAT reaction and analysis. This album came out in March of 1979, my senior year in high school. Our high school band was on our Spring trip down to Florida (from Atlanta). One of the guys on the bus had a huge boom box and the just released cassette, and us band nerds wore that thing out to Florida and back. A great memory.
My husband and I used to have a drinking game called Perfect Album. An Album is a group of songs designed to be played as a block. Certain albums make the most of it and take you on a musical journey from beginning to end or have just about every song that stands alone. Supertramp hit the mark with this one. This came out in an influential time in my life and I am jettisoned back each time one of their songs plays on the radio. What a joy! Thanks for sharing your ratings with us.
Alex, those of us who have been with the channel since the very beginning dorm room days (even before you were on camera) and others who came on board later are here to support you. Good job on picking up while Andy takes a sabbatical. Wishing him and you all the best.

Love this group .. lots of radio play at the time .. great songs on this album
64 here and i played this album nonstop my sophomore year in college. revisited it again not too long ago and damn it is such a good listen.
So what are the game rules?!
I love the love you give to the band I love.
