Heraclius was not Armenian, he was born in Carthage in North Africa. John Tzmisces was certainly an Armenia Emperor, but he did not reign until the 10th century.
Although the Byzantines and Armenians had much in common they were certainly not always friends. In fact it was Byzantine aggression during the 11th century that saw Armenia reduced in military power and internal leadership, just at the time when the Turkish invasions started.
A strong Armenia may have saved the Empire :/

Wrong! At first Armenia shifted to the Christian Byzantine Empire, but what happened in Avarayr and later events pushed the Armenians ever closer to the Sassanian Empire (the Persians). In Avarayr Armenian asked for Byzantium's help to defend Christianity, Byzantium did absolutely nothing and after much bloodshed the Armenians did it all by themselves.

My grandparents were Irish but moved to Britain, and I am British. I don't consider myself to be Irish and I doubt Heraclius considered himself to be anything other than a citizen of the Roman Empire.
The Empire was the 'America' of its day, it was a melting pot for people from all nationalities and races. What counted was one's Orthodoxy and an acceptance of the Byzantine view of the world and its place in the heavenly hierarchy.

In an attempt to bridge the two religions & facilitate faster conversion of Mithraists to Christianity , the Roman Emperor decided to celebrate the Birth of the Christ on the same day as the Birth of Mithra/sun = winter solstice, that's why we Persians also celebrate exact same day.

Do you have a brother? I have a older brother, at least once a week we have an argument , and atleast once a year we have a punch up..
But God help anyone that that comes between us,.. Brothers fight, as long as we forgive and always support each other.
btw my Wife is Greek, so my children have Armenian, Greek & Georgian blood, thats what I call a good bloodline.

  • @Turamber
    @Turamber 15 ปีที่แล้ว

And my grandparents are all Irish, but that doesn't make me Irish. There are a number of sources that say there was Armenian blood in Heraclius' line, but he would have considered himself Roman and not Armenian.

Mithraism (>4000 years) & Zoroastrianism (600 BCE) were both Persian monotheical/ mystic thoughts which had a significant influence on Greek & Roman philosophy. Judaisms has similar beliefs including good and evil were prevalent among the followers of the ancient religion of Zoroaster to which the Israelites have been exposed under the Medes. Judaism and Zoroaster both derived their views of God from a still-earlier, common source = Mitheraism.

as Roman, even though the term 'Roman' was very much an umbrella term encompassing all subjected people, if he was emperor & was involved in court life he certainly would not have been considered Roman & would've been considered an outsider (as he was). He was born to ARMENIAN parents, spoke Armenian as his first language, & furthermore Armenians & Armenia in the Byz. Empire came to dominate military & commercial life composing the economic and military backbone of the empire (Greeks-cultural).

The Byzantine Empire didn't want to exterminate the Armenians, they wanted to include the land to their borders. The Armenians have made a slight abbreviation from Ordodoxy. We Greeks and the Armenians wouldn't have been conquered by the Turks if they had not abbreviated.
Personally, as a Greek, have a strong feeling of friendship for the Armenian nation. I would exist my friends.

Armenians (Heraclius) were persecuted because of their Monophysitism within Christianity and evenmoreso (ferociously) within the Byz. Empire.
The only emperors who supported the Monophysite doctrine (a drastic theological break from the Orthodoxy faith) were, ironically, in fact Armenian!
Pushing this doctrine was obviously not a very smart political move considering the political & religious implications, so why would they push the Monophysitism of the Armenian Apostolic church.

The Empire may have been multi-ethnic and multi-national in NAME, but it was very much in fact an empire dominated by Greek (or Greco-Roman) culture and traditions, by Armenian military leaders, and by Armenian merchants who held a commericial monopoly on all trade crossing through the Armenian Plateau and Anatolia.
Again your familial example has no relevance.
The Empire was a melting pot but certainly NOT the 'America of its day' socially or politically.
