Start with something course like 240 if you have deep pitting and then work through 320 up to 400 or 600 to make it nice and smooth and to put nice machine lines in. If you plan on polishing the letters make sure to go up to at least 400 but 800 would make it easier.

It was the paint itself, but VHT (the spray paint manufacturer) recommended you use a heat gun to make it wrinkle better.
