I went to high school with the kids of Roger Cook, one of the guys who wrote this song. His son was a grade ahead of me and his daughter was two years behind me. Cook is from England, and his son retained his British accent, but his daughter has an American accent.
The story of the song: the man is working undercover for the FBI. He is in the bad guys club “a nest of bad men”, drinking with them “whiskey bottles piling high”, bootlegging boozer on the west side of town “doing wrong”. He was just about to call in the District Attorney (the “D A Man”) to bust them when he heard a woman singing. He was struck by one particular feature that coursed his arousal, her 45 inch chest! The rest of the song is him saving her from being arrested! Singer Allan Clarke adds a distinctive sound to all those great Hollies hits! He lent his vocals to the Alan Parsons hit "Breakdown" in 1976 (please review it)!

For years I thought this was a Creedence Clearwater Revival song. This is the closest I ever heard anyone come close to sounding like the great CCR
Used to think the same, and when I found out it wasn't I assumed for a while that it was Fogerty without CCR. The voices are that similar.
