Upon reflection I find that I do idolize BABYMETAL. I found out about them one year ago and have binge watched since. I never liked metal and I'm not fond of idol groups. I am willing to accept that they are an idol group and they have increased my interest in metal greatly.

You are correct sir! BabyMetal is Label Vehicle for SuMetal Nakamoto. As opposed to BAND-MAID that formed organically. Miku may have secured the record deal as an idol, but all the member formed organically with the exception of Saiki who they found through their agency.

Without a doubt, Babymetal is an idol group. For many foreigners, the ONLY idol group they know.

BABYMETAL and BiS formed around the same time in 2010 and both groups developed fairly strong anti-idol rhetoric, which they went on to (mostly) drop. Between them, they were the birth of alternative idol. While BABYMETAL opened doors for Japanese artists to escape Japan, BiS rewrote the rule book on what idol groups could be within Japan. I'd argue that BiS may have been the more influential of the two groups, but it's a close call.
A lot of the (western) snobbery around idol groups seems to come from some irrational fear that they're "manufactured" and for some reason that makes them "bad". Sure, the west has some pretty bad examples of manufactured groups, but some seem to get a free pass (waves at The Sex Pistols). There's also the lack of "fingers on frets" that seems to freak some people out, completely ignoring all the musicians behind the scenes writing and performing music for idol groups. It also overlooks the other skills idols bring to the table and the way they're trained to be talent for a future beyond the music industry.
Live bands are fairly rare at idol shows. Usually the group can't afford it, or there's just not enough space on some of the microscopic stages they perform on. When they get a decent fan base, then you start to see live music being introduced for the bigger shows. To the best of my knowledge, none of the three generations of BiS ever performed with a live band. What you saw in the video was a collaboration with the noise band Hijokaidan. They played shows and eventually released a couple of albums under the name BiS Kaidan. it's not for the fainthearted - their live shows were health and safety nightmares. Although Hijokaidan did their parts live with real instruments, the whole thing was set to BiS's backing tracks.
BiS gets really interesting in the second generation, when their management ramps up the crazy stunts. It eventually lead to Pour Lui leaving and was the catalyst for her current work in the group PIGGS. Third gen BiS were not as wild or as notable, but did put out a lot of decent punk-rock inspired music. They disbanded early in January 2025. WACK, their talent management company, still has several active groups, including GANG PARADE, ASP, MONSTER IDOL and ExWHYZ, but I do think they're missing BiSH, who were by far their most successful group to date.

1:43 both started in 2010, Babymetal's song iine (their second released song) was partly inspired by EC. You could argue maybe they are Babymetal's electronic influence..?

The anti-idol label has always bothered me. Only for the fact that internally the groups still operate exactly like every other idol group, it is only externally that they differ with all the edgy stuff.
Also, that part when you see the guy with the guitar (Jojo Hiroshige), that is from a BiSKaidan performance when BiS were teamed up with HijoKaidan and mixing the idol sound with a noise project. They were not an idol group that played with a band on stage that I can ever recall, not even at their 2014 farewell show, except for the mentioned BiSKaidan project.
The video you watched barely scratched the surface just like all the videos that guy makes. He does a good job but barely touches on the high points of anything he covers.

In December of 2014 i discovered Babymetal i also discovered BiS at around the same time I think it was because they had the most viral videos on TH-cam at the time so TH-cam just kind of lumped them together in their algorithm being that they both started in 2010 also these two groups change the entire music landscape in Japan going forward becoming two of the most influential music groups of their time

Been a Babymetal Kitsune since 2013 here. Best of both worlds is all I can say. I love metal music and enjoy some J-Pop and not K-Pop for some reason. Though, I did had a phase where I listened for two months nothing but K-pop (mostly Blackpink) after that I got bored with it.

Babymetal does not operate like an Idol group and never have. On the surface they seem idol, but dig down to the practices of how idols are managed and marketed and Babymetal is very different. Saying Babymetal is an idol group is like saying the Ramones are a pop band. Yeah, there are some elements, but really not that many and more ways they diverge. One item for example - there is no MC'ing in a performance, and that is a staple in Idol, where each girl spends time talking to the audience ending in tears. It can be a third of the show. So really easy to dispute actually. Not that it matters.

As much as I love the Japanese Rock/Metal genre and tolerate some IDOL groups, this exemplifies the draw backs. There are so many world class musicians in Japan and this diminishes their talent. If I want to see something tossed in my face I would go to a strip club. I didn’t know you were traveling. I might have made suggestions as a traveler if I had known. Enjoy the trip.

Babymetal and Bis are the first alt-idol groups. In Japan, Babymetal is considered a "metal dance unit", an idol group. Riho Sayashi, one of Babymetal's 3 Avengers. came out of Morning Musume. And one of the other Avengers, ended up in the idol group @onefive the other group that came out of Sakura Gakuin. Akane, the singer in East of Eden came from the idol group Predia. And we know Miku Kobato started out in Lil' Cumin.

Babymetal live the life of idols. It's what they aspired to be and what they trained for. They're image is controlled. They are idols in an untraditional group.
A funny thing. While there are metal elitists that say BM are not metal because they're idols, there are BM fans that are influenced by that and are embarrassed to call BM idol. But there are also idol elitists who say that BM are not idol because they don't do exactly the same things as the groups they follow. But they don't realize that some of these groups, like AKB, differed from the standard idol formula. Idol changes, just like other genres.

    • @FourBleats
      @FourBleats 9 วันที่ผ่านมา +7

They didn't mock the Crucifixion. They used the symbolism of the Crucifixion and the Resurrection to portray SU-METALS rebirth, transitioning from and idol to a metal goddess. Anyone that knows anything about Christianity should be able to understand that. Of course, only watching small clips from bigger shows can lead to misunderstanding.
