Facts: Western N.C. roads are still dangerous and impassible in many places, and landslides remain a threat. Traffic is being rerouted on some roads so emergency vehicles, disaster relief efforts and local traffic can still access them.
People die with no one noticing every single day. Disasters only make the odds better for being counted. Death isn't that big of a deal just because people personally fear it. There's 1,000s of horrors worse than death. I hope I cheered you up and brightened your day.🕊

I'm glad to hear that she, her boyfriend, and her dog made it out safely. However, I need to comment on some of her comments. It appears from her comment that someone reported them as dead so they would be "accounted" for. Rescuers' primary mission would be concentrating on people who were reported as still missing and getting to the alive victims. And, I don't think water is going to be restored for some time, and supplies are being dropped off in all of the affected areas. It just seems that everyone wants instant gratification.
I have heard this from FEMA officials, before. Americans need to know that they need to pack and prepare for 7 days of NO help! This means you need to plan, for yourself, and not count on rescue officials to get to you for 7 days of time. FEMA has stated this before and I don't think it is sinking in to people who are in the path of any natural disaster. 7 whole days before someone will reach you or rescue you! I am more than certain Western North Carolina was not prepared for this sort of devastation. They might have expected severe rain and some flooding, but not like this. These areas are remote and the roads and completely destroyed. The only way in is by helicopter or by canoe. This is a tough situation and I know they are not prepared for this. I hope they have good insurance.

Fema is blocking supplies... I've seen multiple first hand reports and I've also seen numerous first hand reports from victims/volunteers stating that fema has seized aid... if it was one or two reports I'd probably just look past but it's many more than one or two, kind of hard to just disregard what these people are saying.

I’ve lived in Florida and currently live in Louisiana for the last 15 years. I’m a property owner and a pet owner. I usually stay Cat 2 or lower but after this I’m going to start leaving for Cat 1s. I know this was a much stronger storm but why risk it? New Orleans had a horrific wake up call in Katrina - the city didn’t have much wind damage, it wasn’t until the levees burst the city suffered the most damage and loss of life. I’m lucky I have friends/family I can stay with around the country and a reliable car to get out, I understand not wanting to abandon your harm but it really breaks my heart for the people that couldn’t leave. Even physical safety - the mental anguish of seeing places you love float by, human beings carried away in the water with no way to help - it’s just heartbreaking man. Also if roads are out, large trucks with supplies are not able to pass into some areas. Destroyed mountainsides do now allow large resupply choppers to land. There are some areas that are a lot more inaccessible than originally anticipated with standard operating disaster operating procedures.

I think it’s the fact that FEMA stopped people from trying to rescue people and are taking any supplies that they come in contact with. FEMA has their system and protocols but when lives are in danger you do what needs to be done or get out of way of people who don’t have protocols to save lives.

Yes, that helps you know the past. But this storm was so much worse than anything in the past. In one town here in western NC, the flood waters from the worst flood of the past were about 10 feet lower than the flood waters from Helene. Also, here in the Blue Ridge mountains, the mountainsides are mostly covered in trees, so you can't always know where the high water mark was in the past.

With a disaster of this magnitude, it is normal to prepare for at least several days before help can arrive. Have supplies on hand. FEMA is not blocking supplies. The demand is great, and distribution centers have been set up. Once you can get out of your damaged house, leave and go to a populated area.
A flood washed away everything they had you genius, they have nothing, no food, no money, no vehicles so what do you really expect people in that situation to do huh? Suck on air? Why hasn't Anderson Cooper visited NC? I remember him in 2005 visiting Louisiana when Katrina hit and getting mad at the politicians on stage thanking everyone while there was bodies floating in the water, and people needing resued. I quess he is not the same man.
If a big one is coming: -Plan 5 days in advance of gear and canned food -Plan escape routes -Notify friends and family if you don't respond in couple of days signaling you need assistance -Get a drone and some flares and a powerful flashlight FEMA will have so much time on their hands trying to get to everyone you may feel left out if you're distant. I think FEMA should fly some helis around where they can drop gps markers on people found and maybe a walkie talkie for future rescue or food drop off when they fly over again.

My friend living 16 miles away said FEMA the National Guard a s 1800 active duty soldiers are there doing search and rescue handing out hundreds of pallets of MRE and water. Many of the people are so cut off and remote miles from the next neighbors I guess she not aware so many people are helping from where the roads are closed. 😢 I hope the next storm more evacuation happens.

I remember before hurricane Florence hit the Carolinas I packed my vehicle with as much as I could and me and my kids left state. Everyone laughed and said I was being dramatic…my exact words was “It’s not the storm I’m worried about it’s the aftermath” meaning the flooding. I don’t know why I got that feeling but something told me to hurry and get out of where we were. We flood but hadn’t been that bad in yrsss. I live in South Carolina and we have lost 2 homes already so we moved to Myrtle Beach. The flooding wasn’t too bad this go round but our roof did split and now starting to cave in😢 but I’m thankful bc it could have been wayyyy worse. It’s heartbreaking seeing what all these people are going through. Prayers🙏🙏

You would think people would have learned by now to not live by rivers or down stream from dams. They all say it will never happen to me & it does. What I don’t understand is people will rebuild & it happens all over again. Only thing I have to really worry about is earthquakes & Yellowstone erupting. I would love to live in the mountains but fires concern me. I live in a valley 50 miles long & 20 miles wide but I don’t understand why people want to live in the lowest part of the valley where all the water would go if the dams around here break.
Honey forget your house all the roads and soil is gone for miles. What is left are giant boulders and rocks. They are not going to spend billions to rebuild roads just to get to the few houses still standing. You will never have a road, never will you have water and electric. 😊
I live in western NC and the reason the flooding was so severe is that it had already rained for several days before Helene hit. So the ground was already saturated, and then we got from 18 to 30 inches, depending on where you were. We were hard hit, yes, and in some cases defenseless. But we're helping each other and getting lots of help from the government and private agencies.
Thanks to this snafu at CNN, they accidentally committed an act of journalism. Whoever vetted this woman for this interview better be looking for a new job. In 3 minutes, she turned what was supposed to be a fluff human interest story about a woman and her dog into the most concisely articulated summary of every major hurdle faced by the folks down there and provided more useful information than the entire national news media combined has provided in a week.

There has been constant reporting coming out of Western Carolina since day one. There was 4 people from FEMA maybe 4 days after the storm, followed by around a dozen more by the weekend ... these numbers indicate an artificial presence !
Fema is blocking supplies... I've seen multiple first hand reports and I've also seen numerous first hand reports from victims/volunteers stating that fema has seized aid... if it was one or two reports I'd probably just look past but it's many more than one or two, kind of hard to just disregard what these people are saying.
They actually do take the supplies to distribute themselves I think. They aren't supposed to take from churches though.

New Orleans had a horrific wake up call in Katrina - the city didn’t have much wind damage, it wasn’t until the levees burst the city suffered the most damage and loss of life.
I’m lucky I have friends/family I can stay with around the country and a reliable car to get out, I understand not wanting to abandon your harm but it really breaks my heart for the people that couldn’t leave. Even physical safety - the mental anguish of seeing places you love float by, human beings carried away in the water with no way to help - it’s just heartbreaking man. Also if roads are out, large trucks with supplies are not able to pass into some areas. Destroyed mountainsides do now allow large resupply choppers to land. There are some areas that are a lot more inaccessible than originally anticipated with standard operating disaster operating procedures.

Yes, that helps you know the past. But this storm was so much worse than anything in the past. In one town here in western NC, the flood waters from the worst flood of the past were about 10 feet lower than the flood waters from Helene. Also, here in the Blue Ridge mountains, the mountainsides are mostly covered in trees, so you can't always know where the high water mark was in the past.

-Plan 5 days in advance of gear and canned food
-Plan escape routes
-Notify friends and family if you don't respond in couple of days signaling you need assistance
-Get a drone and some flares and a powerful flashlight
FEMA will have so much time on their hands trying to get to everyone you may feel left out if you're distant. I think FEMA should fly some helis around where they can drop gps markers on people found and maybe a walkie talkie for future rescue or food drop off when they fly over again.

My friend living 16 miles away said FEMA the National Guard a s 1800 active duty soldiers are there doing search and rescue handing out hundreds of pallets of MRE and water. Many of the people are so cut off and remote miles from the next neighbors I guess she not aware so many people are helping from where the roads are closed. 😢 I hope the next storm more evacuation happens.

I remember before hurricane Florence hit the Carolinas I packed my vehicle with as much as I could and me and my kids left state. Everyone laughed and said I was being dramatic…my exact words was “It’s not the storm I’m worried about it’s the aftermath” meaning the flooding. I don’t know why I got that feeling but something told me to hurry and get out of where we were. We flood but hadn’t been that bad in yrsss. I live in South Carolina and we have lost 2 homes already so we moved to Myrtle Beach. The flooding wasn’t too bad this go round but our roof did split and now starting to cave in😢 but I’m thankful bc it could have been wayyyy worse. It’s heartbreaking seeing what all these people are going through. Prayers🙏🙏

I live in western NC and the reason the flooding was so severe is that it had already rained for several days before Helene hit. So the ground was already saturated, and then we got from 18 to 30 inches, depending on where you were. We were hard hit, yes, and in some cases defenseless. But we're helping each other and getting lots of help from the government and private agencies.
