I had routine envelopes all year. One for kid's lunch money, 1 for Christmas, one for unexpected, and the rest for me. I would use my "allowance" to fill up these categories. The unexpected was usually to cover when my husband's paycheck was late; this was solved when we changed to direct deposit. I also saved for Christmas all year for gifts; the food was bought by shopping sale ads. I would buy a turkey for Thanksgiving and a second one for later in the year. By making a second feast, it would be used when money was more tight in February or so. I'd make the feast, leftovers, sandwiches, and soup or casseroles. I never thought about back to school or other categories like yours, but my kids are grown and gone now. Great ideas, though.
One of the two months from each year, I take that extra paycheck and save one for my Christmas budget. That has been a game changer! Tax refunds get divided into envelope or electronic envelopes ( bank accounts) for stuff like debt, property taxes, HOA fees, etc.
Thank you for this video! Very clear! I also watched your live class video yesterday about sinking funds, and I really want to give it a try. I usually don’t use cash at all, but I think it may be an effective way to actually “seeing”the money being saved for a particular purpose and hopefully it will give me more motivation.
I hope your girls have a great year! Our daughters school district started today and I remember you mentioning in another video that your district there also starts pretty early. Summer is officially over, so this video is perfectly timed for me because my next thing on the agenda is saving for her birthday and then Thanksgiving. Thank you for sharing your own ideas with us.🙏🏻
This year, we did not anticipate our daughters hair expense but we had a little bit of extra cash so we were able to cover it. Next year I will be ready! Lol
