In support of the widely held claim and view that V Anand is or was the best speed chess player of his times, and he is still holding the record for the fastest chess player of all times.
I must add now, since we must give credit were credit is due, Carlsen has smashed that. Carlsen has proven over and over he is the best speed player in the last several years, if we take into account his winnings and achievements in such a time control.
NIA Mac Yeah! Now carlsen is better! But anand was better at rapid more than blitz and he has become older too! Carlsen won both blitz and rapid world title but recently had to give it to Ivanchuk for rapid as he won..!
Anand is the only palyer in the world that plays a blitz game, and it looks like he spend 10 hours thinking! great footage, thanx for the upload!!! Vishi rules!!!!
Proud To have met my Idol Today.....Anand its my greatest pleasure to meet you personally today.....thanks for the photo op as well....i have posted it on my facebook....you will become 7 times World Chess Champion beating Kasparov and Karpov and Emmanuel Lasker's record!
6:17 "OOOOOOWWWWWWW, and he's sacrificed his QUEEEEEEN !!!!" Little did he know after taking the queen, black rook takes the white rook and checkmates!!!
Gerardo León No its not a sacrifice sacrifice is done for positional advantage and enough pieces to mate or turn into winning position! Thus it just used for checkmate and therefore not a sacrifice!
treta yug by sacrificing his queen he would have turned his position in a winning one after 2 moves later. It was done for positional advantage thought. Don't understand your perspective.
Gerardo León No it wasn't a positional advantage the opponent just blundered the pawn overlooking the mate threat and therefore it wasn't a sacrifice its just a capturing of pawn..! To know exactly what is called sacrifice look at Kasparov immortal queen sacrifice game or Fischers Sacrifice Game and Even More Fantastic and MindBoggling would be to watch Anand vs Aronian (Tata Steel Chess 2013)
Maurice Ashley is the commentator, and hes a very accomplished grandmaster. Of course, he has to misuse some terms such as sacrifice for the sake of making the game more exciting and enjoyable to watch, especially in the case of an audience that is not familiar with chess.
Well the queen sacrifice is technically a sacrifice. It's the most simple case of a sacrifice, where you give up a piece to checkmate on the next move.
I think Anand wanted to return to the main variation that was played but suddenly he was afraid that Smirin will sacrifice the knight on f7 so he did a bit of calculation. White move-order was rare and it reaches the same position as in the main line with an extra move.
I liked this game because you could actually see the pieces on the board. Some of the game clips on TH-cam were filmed from very far away, making it impossible to really follow what's happening on the board.
That's the thing with speed chess, you can expect your opponent to make a mistake like that because it all happens too fast, but then again, playing against Anand, you know he doesn't sacrifice a queen that easially without gain
Also, remember that Anand only had to draw this game to win the match. By the time the endgame kicked in, his opponent had no chance to come out with a win.
For a person who almost never plays chess, but knows the rules and loves to watch the games, 6:19 is absolutely AMAZING to see. Any normal person would've taken the queen, even the commentator was fooled, however, had the pawn taken the queen, the rook could have advanced and checkmate him...
lol the commentator was not fooled. he's a GM and it's a really basic tactic. it's called a pin. the pawn was "pinned" and couldn't recapture the queen, because it was lead to a back rank checkmate.
YEAH but if u come at intermediate levels , u can definately see the backrank checkmate there if u take the queen Idk if u are even gonna see my reply to this 11yr old comment
Hello. A queen sacrifice is where the opponent will lose material and the game if they DON'T take your queen, so it seems the person is now sacrificing his or her queen for what looks like a loss in material. In the above game, white made a mistake with the move f4 as it's not protecting the pawn on e5 at all - if the pawn on the f-file leaves that file to re-capture, white gets mated in one move. In effect pawn f4 is pinned. That's not a sacrifice that's an oversight on white's part.
@eggkunt He's a GM. his name is Maurice Ashley, and he intends to make it understandable for very wide audiance which includes sub patzers (1400- elo fide players)
Hello. No, by the standard definition: a queen sacrifice is when if they don't take the piece, they lose material, but when they do (and it looks like they will gain material by doing so) they will end up losing anyway (perhaps by a mate and so on). The move the commentator was calling a queen "sacrifice" was nothing of the kind: his opponent flat out lost a piece to the queen and could not take it back or be checkmated.
Maurice is awesome! He’s a very good chess player and analyst. There’s a lot of haters but the only people that have the time to hate should be practicing instead.
@FanjitaTowels No worries. Anand offered his queen as a sacrifice. Of course the "gift" can't be accepted without losing the game. A grandmaster announcer is aware of this distinction. They are just keeping the game exciting for the layman by letting them know the queen is en pris.
I don't think Anand was really calculating this position, he is a very good player in blitz and he knows that, this may have been a psychological strategy to make Smirin nervous
@ChessNoir It unleashes a discovered attack by the Bishop on e4 on White's Queen. White's Bishop on d4 will drop. So too will White's Bishop on c4 if Black captures the Bishop on e7. And if White decides to hang on to his c4 Bishop then Black can post his dark squared Bishop on c5 with threats on f2, and a threat of a Bishop sacrifice on g2 leading to a probable mate as well. BTW 2.22 refers to the time on Anand's clock. It corresponds to 5.12 on the video.
@kiranyoutubification smirin resigned because there was no way of protecting his last 2 pawns from being taken. If he doesn't exchange rooks, anand could just move his rook to g3 and it's bye-bye pawns. anand can then queen both his connected passed pawns and easily win the game.
Spending 1:43 mins on move 4 is a bit dangerous in blitz games, but Anand calculates precisely and he set the curve! Anand's opponent didn't manage the time control well, he have more time left on anand.
Anand is simply amazing! What a champion! Maurice Ashley is the right guy to commentate on chess games. Others put be to sleep. I mean c'mon, chess is already a boring game to the public. Spice it p a bit! Fantastic commentating, as usual, from Maurice!
@ChessNoir Thanx, I noticed just after posting it! the initial reaction was basically because of over-reacting comments from commentators... They were like "aww... Anand what have you done..." But seriously seems like those commentators were like novice players....
Both Grand Masters in their own right. Would have been nice if they put the game score up. This was a unusual line in the Petrov Defence and I am guessing that Vishy did not want to face Cochrane's Gambit!
"Give me six hours to chop down a tree and I will spend the first four sharpening the axe." - Abraham Lincoln quotes
He obviously just calculated 50 moves ahead.
hahaha
That’s exactly what happened
he was thinking about whether or not he turned the stove off at home before he came
"and he thumped that rook down with authority"
The commentator is awesome!
it's grandmaster maurice ashley!
This is what TH-cam is all about. We watch genius chess players, commented by strong grandmasters, then call all of them stupid.
this is what life is all about
He stopped and tied his shoe ... in the 100 yard dash :)
Ronbo710 badass
Anand known for his Speed and accuracy proved .....
6:18 looooooooool
Bro that sacrifice would've won it for Vishy.. by checkmate.
@@Krato65 yes but that "oooooh" by the anouncer is hilarious

i cant believe he was thinking so deeply. nerves must have got to him at the big moment
1:22 Smirin is like wtf are you plotting?
This Anand has been around for a while. It's 2011 and he's still #2 !
2023, he still in top 10

This has gotto be one of the most amazing game of chess I have ever seen and the commentary was awesome!
Gone were those days vishy ....
2:26 you see he saw the clock and realised its HIS move.
+Sunny Jain lol that'd be a great story
aushusuhahasuhsuhasa Really?
He just saw how much time still left to destroy the other side
back when Maurice didn't have the engine
when the engine would have told him it was not a queen sacrifice since taking the queen would lead to a back rank mate. lol
lol
@@GSBroker Amen. I love how Danny stiffles a laugh many times in these Intel videos when Maurice suggests moves.
He should have choose basketball

Watched it again. Very exciting game! Looking forward to watching more videos.
Thanks again,
Tim
Oh man, very exciting game. Love how they just keep "sacrificing" knowing they will win a piece back within a few moves. Amazing!
That knight on d5 was a beast.
Also, uncertain players are afraid of the clock; they're not chilling out to meditate on the position in the 4th move.
Amazing!! Thank you for posting this action filled game! WOW! I'm going to save it and watch it again.
peace,
Tim

It's not a sacrifice if it's a checkmate trap. Is it?
Maurice Ashley is the commentator, and hes a very accomplished grandmaster. Of course, he has to misuse some terms such as sacrifice for the sake of making the game more exciting and enjoyable to watch, especially in the case of an audience that is not familiar with chess.

I wonder if Vishy was having a flashback of his 6-move loss in the Petroff against Zapata. 😂😂😂😂
Thumbs up for 6:19
He was fucking awesome! How else are non chess players gonna ever like this game??
I like to believe he planned the entire game in that 1:43 ;)
I loved the commentating. I've got to favorite this just for the commentary.
Also, remember that Anand only had to draw this game to win the match. By the time the endgame kicked in, his opponent had no chance to come out with a win.
Anand had 1 minute and 20 seconds left. That's enough to play the endgame to the mate more than 10 times.
Anand spent that much time just to listen"MAKE A MOVE".. Anand
Anand calculated 40 variations
6:18 That's hardly a queen sacrifice, considering it would be followed by a mate in 1 with Rxf1#.
That was awesome.
@ksri66 if smirin takes the queen, it would open the f file for anand's rook to capture on f1 which is checkmate.
For a person who almost never plays chess, but knows the rules and loves to watch the games, 6:19 is absolutely AMAZING to see. Any normal person would've taken the queen, even the commentator was fooled, however, had the pawn taken the queen, the rook could have advanced and checkmate him...

GG!
It's rare in high level games for the king to actually be checkmated. Once a player realizes that he's going to be mated, he just forfeits the game.
I don't think Anand was really calculating this position, he is a very good player in blitz and he knows that, this may have been a psychological strategy to make Smirin nervous

After Bd4, Nxc3 wins the house, surely. Picking up the d4 bishop with monstrous centralization afterward.
Anand owns Smirin and the commentators. looks like he knew what he was doing all along.

to be fair to the commentators, it was a bit fast and they just didn't see that if the queen is taken then its checkmate.... great game!
