The blue fire, the echoing roars, the undead appeal, all perfectly suit him.
Sometimes i picture him as a separate entity, and is an ancient Bowser, possibly the ancestor to who we see all the time, who survived his death thanks to magic augments from a Magikoopa.
This way he's more than a state of undead being that Bowser can become

I REALLY hope Dry Bowser comes back for more Mario games in the future. He's one of my favorite Mario characters! He's even stronger than normal Bowser, because instead of the usual yellow fire, Dry Bowser spits blue fire, which is the hottest type of fire there is! Not only that, but he can't really die. He just regenerates, much like a Dry BONES, which is probably why they called him Dry Bowser. He can't permenantly die! He's like Jason! Dry Bowser is my boi!

Headcanon Time:
Dry Bowser was created from the remains of Bowser's ancestors by Kamek's magic, and that's why he's often seen as a seperate character from Bowser.
Despite being technically related, Bowser and Dry Bowser are the polar opposites of each other. Whereas Bowser cares for his minions and rules out of their undying respect for him, Dry Bowser is selfish and rules his army by force. Because of this, the two Bowsers do not get along.

I have a theory on Dry Bowser. When Bowser Jr. threw him in the cauldron to resurrect his dad, the spell had not only revived Bowser himself but made Dry Bowser a separate being.

Did you know that Dry Bowser’s the mysterious villain? He’s STILL not as quite as evil as he is.
In Bowser's Tank Terror, Bowser’s HP is halfway through at 50, and his tank exploded and then he hurled into the lava, and his skin IS off of Bowser, and he made a quick return himself as Dry Bowser, and as he appeared in Mario Party 10, just like in Mario Party: Island Tour's Dry Bowser’s Brain Bonk, he returns as Bowser’s other half of his HP. As Dry Bowser returns, he’s giant, and he’s gonna breathe fire, and throw bones at them the same time.

The first time I fought Dry Boswer was in 2012 when I got my first Nintendo game: Super Mario 3D Land. But there are other times where I confronted the Koopa King's Skeleton/Dry counterpart...one example is the 3DS Version of Mario and Sonic Rio 2016, where the player must defeat him to unlock him as a playable character for the Javelin Throw Event...
Anyhow, I still have 3D Land, Mario Party 10, New Super Mario Bros 2 and Mario and Sonic Rio

As a kid I was told that dry bowser was bowsers grandfather. I’ve honestly held onto that even tho it might not be true it gives a little bit more of a story to the character instead of him just being bowser in skeleton form. That little misconception and also the design of the character makes him one of my favorites in the Mario bro’s series.

It is unknown about his backstory in the Spin-off titles, but he is the stronger, lighter version of Bowser. In the adventure games, specifically New Super Mario Bros, he is the melted version of Bowser.
