    Went swimming there, and as we were swimming around we saw a stray one coming up to us. He was huge and so so curious. He scared a bunch if people but omg I've never seen a more sweet, adorable animal ever in my life. They're just really curious and wanna see what you are.

      That’s probably due to the fact that they have no natural predators (except stupid humans and their boats that harm them)

    I was swimming there 20 years ago with four girls. A large female manatee swam up to us and rolled over on her back wanting a belly rub. The youngest girl then climbed on top of my head and started screaming. This place is Florida's best kept secret.

    • @wes326
      @wes326 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @Jordan Jay I used to live in Melbourne Florida and kept our boat in a marina. We were watching a group of manatees from the shore when one surfaced and blew snot all over my Air Force dress uniform. Fun times.

      I was also there 20 years ago! I just responded to two other similar comments. Imagine the coincidence if we were there together, though I suspect this experience happens often as it's common for them to pass through the swimming area and thousands, hundreds of thousands have visited and swam there. I'll add the comment I wrote below though :)
      I swam with a manatee in Florida once. By that I mean all us kids were swimming in a river, located in a state park with hot springs, when a manatee came down the river to us. None of us knew until the lifeguards started shouting to get out and all of us crowded near the single ladder to climb out onto a deck. I looked back through the clear Florida water and saw it coming towards us. The young boy bebind me was last in line to get out and just before it was my turn to escape on the ladder I looked back and saw the manatee directly under him. He started screaming terrified, "It's touching my foot!!!" I wasn't afraid because that majestic manatee was so magical and friendly looking. I remember as all of us kids and parents stood around watching it pass through the swimming area and being so disappointed and confused why we weren't allowed to swim with it.

      I grew up in a small town on the east coast of south FL and my family would go to something called, "The Indian River Boardwalk" (not a real boardwalk) to look for Manatees. They would come up close to eat the Algae that would grown next to the retention wall. And nothing was cuter than the big Mama Manatees with their fat little calves. Definitely worth seeing in person! 🥰

    Why aren’t boat propeller guards mandatory by law? Seems like an easy fix to stop the destruction of these beautiful creatures

      Good question

    • @anstjsdlr
      @anstjsdlr 3 ปีที่แล้ว +13

      As a wise question as yours may be, the answer is relatively simple and dumb; it is because they do not want to pay extra money for manatee.

    • @stevelucky7579
      @stevelucky7579 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Probably because it’s not convenient enough. People want (I assume) good propellers to enjoy speed in large bodies of water. And (I assume again) propeller guards disrupt/throw off that speed maneuverability etc. or is too expensive otherwise.

    • @snoopdogg8737
      @snoopdogg8737 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      That is a good question however the prop scars are actually not as serious as the manatee striking the actual boat. the manatees are able to recover from the cuts relatively well however when the hull of the boat hits the manatee the real damage is done. Boat strikes break bones and cause internal damage much more serious than what is evident on the outside.

    A big one asked us for directions to warmer water and a belly rub then she saw we had Doritos and asked to try a family sized bag so we said sure she loved them so we gave her a box of lucky charms she seemed to admire as well we called her the dumpster after that. She pulled us to the nearest gas station once we strapped the boat onto her. We were flying across that blue water atleast 3 knots. Then my Mom woke me for dinner.

      They are starving to death now. This is 2 years ago. Now herbicide toxins being sprayed all over Florida's waters because the agencies get grant money for it. There has been an extreme die off because the aquatic plants these vegan mammals feed on are routinely eradicated to get that grant money. All they need to get the money is say they found an invasive plant from Monsanto/ USDA list.

A place to make sure no contamination can be built from what maybe descomposition of the vegetable. Or protect the areas the manaties gather for food making sure the alge they eat can be grown. I think it be worth the try.

      They did a feeding program this year in Florida to keep them from dying. They feed them lettuce. They eat sea grass in the wild but it has died since there is too much pollution and algae that removes the oxygen the grass needs to grow. They saved many of them this year.

      This spring used to be as clear and clean as drinking water. It is kind of sad to see it this green. And yes, they normally are in the St Johns River which is at the end of this famous FL Spring. There are many springs all along the St Johns River. And they can go up into any of them. But Blue Springs is special, because this is where they are released after Sea World releases the ones healed after being injured by boat propellers. It truely is a beautiful sight to see them during the coldest part of winter, which is this month of February.

    Well done Florida. These things are slow and could have been wiped out years ago like Stellar's Sea Cow. Protecting them and their environment will guarantee spending tourists (including Aussies where The Dugong lives). A win/ win situation.
