Welcome to Chasing Latitudes! Have you ever imagined the smell of the ocean air as your boat crashes through the waves? The freedom that comes from casting off the bow lines and heading out to sea to explore new places you can’t reach by car or airplane? Then this channel is for you.
You will not see white sand beaches here, restaurant reviews, beach parties, selfies or Japanese knives. What you will find is factual information based on decades of sailing experience.
My channel is specifically meant for one thing and one thing only, to help YOU find your new to you fancy-dancy yacht of your dreams and get on the water in the fastest, most time efficient manner.
Don’t get caught up in looking at old boats! I focus on mostly newer vessels, built in 2000 or later because I want you to spend as much of your time as possible sailing, not practicing your restoration skills on an old boat attempting to bring it to its former glory.
You want to take advantage of the amazing newer technology and modern hull designs when it comes to sailing. This is going to make your vessel far easier to sail solol or short handed and make them far more comfortable and efficient to live aboard full time or even just weekenders without buying more boat than you need.
I offer a wide variety of services including consulting where I will take you through the entire process of how to budget properly, choosing what vessel size will work for your needs, what type of vessel, I will help you shop for vessels, determine offer prices, schedule surveys, talk with brokers, teach you how to do your own pre-survey, walk you through hiring the correct surveyor and help you avoid all of the common pitfalls that you will find when purchasing used sailing vessels.
The consulting does not stop there, I will be with you every step of the way and long after you have purchased your vessel as consulting also comes with lifetime access to the members area,.
Chasing Latitudes hosts a large, active private members area where the members are more than happy to offer their own experience to solve problems, host private videos for ASA Sailing quizzes (ASA 101, 103, & 104), and live stream videos which feature anything from member cruising to boat shopping, boat comparisons, and other live content with chat from the subscribers to my TH-cam channel and channel members.
It’s time for YOU to get on the water. Come aboard!

Got a quote from Geico today for a Jen 45.2 for $2,500 /yr covering US waters with no international rider. 300k Liab, 500 deduct. Solar rack batteries and all-in-one inverter/converter prices are dropping if you have dry storage for the rack batteries. Thanks for the video!

You always put the reality check in your videos. I appreciate very much, that you do not sugarcoat any aspect of what one must have in mind for a successful purchase. Many times, the swinging back-and-forth between models and their characteristics, often lead many people (me) to start thinking of ONLY the price of the vessel. But there is MORE to it, as you put it realistically. I thank you for this, and many other tips, suggestions, and advice, that we have available on your channel. Your editing, photos, and sequences, are really fine, too! Thanks again, for your sage advice that helps people to keep needing a reality check!!

Great stuff. This is all stuff people don't think about. Drop $150K on a boat and before you know it you are in for another $15K- $30K depending on what you want.

They way I think about it - if my budget is $150k/total - the actual boat can’t be more than $60k. Everything else needs to go to repairs/fees/running costs.

I appreciate the way you explain the TRUE costs involved. Most people are very vague and a new boater has no idea how much money one needs to either make annually or have available to be able ($) to go sailing (even part time).
I just bought my first tiny (older) boat. 30 feet. Not living on it. I want to see how I like to own a boat (or not) first.
Then I may move on to a larger one but also newer.

Should I set up a contingency for an Orca attack if I want to sail in Spain/Portugal?

A couple of your estimates are quite high in my opinion. Insurance depends on location and the value you are insuring. If you are outside the hurricane zone during hurricane season a better estimate for insurance is 1.5-2% of the insured value for a boat under $100K. As the value of the boat goes up, that number goes down. Your dinghy estimate is way high. You can get a new rib and 6 hp motor for around $3,500-$4,000 and considerably less with a smaller motor or non-rib dinghy. You do not need a watermaker. That is a luxury that MANY cruisers have and do live without. Now, as far as the power system goes, people now days use ridiculous amounts of power. You can get by on much less if you plan your boat appropriately. Also realistically you can't put that much solar on a sailboat. For a 40 footer 400-600 watts is about the upper limit for solar. That will cost under $1000 for panels and solar charge controllers. 600 watts of solar will put out no more than about 270 amp-hours per day for a 12 volt system ion full sun late June days in the northern hemisphere and less at every other time of the year. So you need no more than about 500 amp-hr of lead acid batteries or 300 amp-hr of lithium batteries. So you are looking at no more than $2,200 for solar and batteries. You don't need and inverter. Just run everything off of DC. Furthermore if you are going to be on the hook, you don't need a charger. As far as AC goes, if you want to run AC you will need to be plugged in to shore power or you will need to install a generator. Yeah, you can run AC off of a BIG bank of lithium batteries, but you can't install enough solar to keep the batteries charged if you run the AC.

I think your prices in this video are realistic, but probably a little low unless you really shop around.
And the sailing TH-camr creators I'm aware of that ended their relationship did have very basic boats.
