Baby elephant helped out of water trough under cover of darkness

  • A baby elephant is rescued and reunited with its mother
When this new-born elephant calf got stuck in a water trough, help was at hand just metres away! The dramatic night-time operation to rescue her took place just outside the Sheldrick Trust's Ithumba Stockades in February 2021, after night vision cameras revealed the calf had managed to climb into the trough.
If there is even a glimmer of hope for a baby to be returned to their family, we move mountains to make it happen. Our staff immediately sprung into action, using a water bowser to carefully drive the reluctant herd away, enabling Keepers to bravely jump out into the National Park, running through the darkness to lift the stricken baby out of the trough. After visual confirmation that she had found her herd, the calf’s mother turned back to rescuers, almost as if acknowledging all that had unfolded, before disappearing into the night. A perfect ending for our staff who work tirelessly to keep families together.
We documented the operation from start to finish in our newest update: www.sheldrickw...
Established in 1977, the Sheldrick Wildlife Trust (SWT) operates the world’s most successful orphan elephant rescue and rehabilitation program, rescuing and hand-rearing orphaned elephants and other animals that have lost their mothers, all too often as a result of human activity. But we do much more than this. Through our Aerial, Anti-Poaching and Mobile Veterinary Units, we safeguard the natural environment and provide immediate assistance to wild animals in need. We also secure irreplaceable wilderness areas so that animals will always have space to roam and work with local partners and communities to ensure people and wildlife can live alongside one another.

As a marine mammal rescuer and rehabilitator I have seen almost all of our seals head to the ocean when we open their kennels, only to stop, turn around and look at us, and then hurry off to swim. We all know it’s their way of saying “Thanks!” and we always have a tear or two in our eyes! I’ve adopted Ziwadi, Olorien and Kindani and I am SO GRATEFUL for the love and care their keepers give to them and all the orphans at SWT!❤️🐘

I wonder if mum realized they were there to help. With the truck I couldn't see if she had line of sight when they simply plucked the baby from danger then let her run to her family. Well elephants are smart, I'm sure she figured it out!

@@michellesheaff3779 they had to chase mum out of the way because she was defending her baby--Indeed she couldn't have known they were there to help & they are aware how dangerous humans are & she was an elephant-sized mum defending her child. I'm sure she watched. They were right there & the humans ran back to the truck asap. 🥰 After the fact, I'm more than sure she understood.

I adopted Burra 19 years ago and have continued my adoption and donated annually. Although I have heard nothing of Burra, who was a snare victim as a baby (badly torn ear) for a very long time, I remain optimistic that he is now a huge bull leading a herd out there living the life. I relish the regular "Field Notes" I receive from SWT - so much detail, such good photos and videos and so well written. I especially enjoy the personal stories of the Staff at SWT.
Angela Sheldrick has filled her mother's shoes so well. Thank you Angela and all the people who work for SWT - and all the adopters and donors who support such a great effort to help these magnificent animals to lead their lives back in nature where they belong - Thank You!

That was a courageous, protective mom that got right in the face of the truck to protect her baby. Even after rescue they all corralled around the baby. I’m glad the baby was unharmed and found it’s mom. As protective as moms are and even when moms die, the baby, a lot of times, stays with mom’s body, I get surprised when baby elephants are found alone. I always wonder if the mom returns after the baby has been rescued? They have impeccable memory and she would remember where she left her baby.

Well done! 💕When building those water wells, they should build a ramp inside so animals can get-out if they get in or fall in!❤
