    Sooooo... Volibear showed up in a short story recently. At least I think it's Volibear. I'm reasonably sure. Did, uh... did Volibear always have twelve eyes and mind control powers? Cause he's got them now. It might be more than twelve eyes.
    Oh and also Udyr is Sejuani's dad, so THAT's a thing. Let's discuss!

    It feels like, at a glance, that they were looking at Volibear and felt he was some weird fusion of Polar Bears and Thor. It just didn't make sense. So for inspiration the writers either looked directly at Native American mythos or read Pet Cemetary. Volibear really feels, at a glance, like it takes strong thematic notes from the Wendigo. The Wendigo is a spirit of death, undeath, and cannibalism, and this new Volibear touches on that realm really nicely in a way that doesn't feel out of place with a more spiritual and naturalistic Freljord.

    • @Lablass-

      I remember when my grandparents first told me about the Wendigo. It was a hand-me-down story that my great grandfather first herd from a Native American farmer who didn't live to far from us. When I did my first read through for the story, my mind insistently drift to the story of the Wendigo. I wonder what else they have in store for the Freljord.

      "Where savage nature overtakes a human being and turns them into a monster" 13:05 - 13:10 This specific line reminds me of that survival horror game called Until Dawn. Where the wendigo spirit (the main antagonist) possesses the person, if that said person succumbs them self into cannibalism. Then tranforming the victim into a cannibalistic monster who hunts solely for human flesh. Ironic enough is that this mythical creature is usually mentioned in cold climate and northern regions, an icy place just like the freljord.

      There's also Finnish mythology, with our holiest of animals being a bear and also having shamanistic beliefs, well before the Swedes crusaded us with Christianity, even still, by sheer word of mouth, those beliefs, spells and traditions passed onto this day, similar to some of the Ancient American mythos, which is why some of the Finnish who migrated into America, lived with the 'indians'. Ya can see it with wooden bear statues as decoration or protection in-front of people's houses or the alternative names given to them, not to spell out their actual name. Hunting them and making a feast afterwards to pass the spirit was important as well. There's also the god of harvest and lightning, Ukko, who was also beliefed to be a thunderbird before. So I'd say more so Finnish, but it also could be native American beliefs, or a mix.
      Actually listening to this more, the blood, the chanting, which is common you can see in ancient Finnish spells, sort of a poem that refers to some sort of origin.

    • @rokka7188
      @rokka7188 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Actually I'd say this is based on Bear Worship/Cult tradition that the ancient (Uralic) Finns, Sami, (Asian) Ainu, some of the Korean and also Slavic cultures worship. Partially ancient americans do worship animals, including the bear, but it's not specifically bear. Still, most of those are cultures that rarely get attention as well.

    Regarding Udyr being Sejuani's father, we were told that warmothers in the freljord take multiple husbands and when they have children all of them act as dads even though nobody knows who the biological father of every child is, so Udyr seems to be the former partner of Sejuani's mother but who knows if he actually is the biological dad.

    A few things:
    First off I think the reason volibear is so attractive to shamans in particular is because he silences all the other animals. Imagine hearing all these voices and this dude walks up who can just make them go away in a snap as long as you devote yourself to him. You may be tempted to take that easy way out of your problem.
    Second I’m worried they will tie volibear to the void. I really hope they don’t as the void is too often used as is imo, but that’s just my opinion.
    Finally I hope one day we get some kind of story with ivern and udyr, since they now have such similar yet different experiences. Just something I think would be neat.

    • @diegosaez4885
      @diegosaez4885 5 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      I believe there's a simple solution, similar to how Akali's VGU was managed: The current Volibear is his historic and heroic representation, while the Volibear that's portrayed in this story is the actual character.
      As to how to explain his visual design without shoehorning the Void -which personally is the least explored faction and yet the most exploited to the point of being used more as a plot device than an actual faction- is that he's nature's undiluted violence. He's a Freljordian demigod that aligned with the primal Bear spirit, mangling into such a volatile mixture that causes everything else to simply bow and give themselves to him.
      He ain't related to the Void as much as possibly being/becoming the planet's response to it with their own eldritch but self-controlled horror. An unyielding, war-forged, tempered warrior that's such a natural threat that eveything else has to stop and surrender to him (which does sound like a good counter-measure against the Void) other than his followers. A warrior with the simple power to spiritually demoralize his foes and both withstand and regenerate his wounds sounds like the perfect warrior.
      And personally, considering his brothers are a rune-ridden sedentary blacksmith walrus that secretes lava and belches fire, a giand inmortal bird made of ice that keeps an entire region covered in eternal winter, and a seal that can manipulate the ocean's currents and everything beneath, I'd say an armored, self-regenerating and multi-eyed horned bear that belches thunder, transforms people into man-bears, and spiritually demoralizes people around him doesn't sound as different, just more graphic.

    I don't nececearly see this version of Voli as a completely diff character. I see this version of voli as the dark side that is rarely seen. So I don't want a reworked voli that is just a zombie-bear or whatever, but it wuld be interesting to keep that as an element. Like when Voli os low on health his passive triggers and he gains his hp back rapidly. I'd imagine that his visuals culd change when he's low on health, that he looks torn and nasty and his "mortality is shown". And when the passive hits he goes back to his fresh state "the god can't die". Just a thought but who knows what Riot has in mind. I still love Voli perfectly the way he is even if he's just a "boring" thunder-bear demigod. But yeah still an interesting take that gave me some interesting visuals and inspiration.

    Well i have a theory that they gonna change that the old volibear is what he used to be in the past where he battle the void or something then got corrupted and turn into this horrible abomination we got now. It make sense that a demigod led a tribe of warmonger to fight against the void then got corrupted in turn. It would be the most direct and easiest way to have both version of volibear make sense.

    • @ArtumTsumia
      @ArtumTsumia 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Udyr is one of the few remaining 'Yorick' characters that Riot has just kind of been ignoring (Mordekaiser might be the only other). It's been really _strange_ too because they even made *Spirit Guard Udyr* which felt like they were attempting a rework internally, couldn't settle on things, scrapped the changes and sold it to players as a skin.
      These resent stories have me mildly hopeful that we'll be seeing some changes for these characters. Volibear isn't one that would have jumped to the front of my mind, but he too is from when _League_ was quite a bit more incoherent. Such changes to the likes of Volibear might even bring in a place to try and make characters like Fiddlesticks or Nocturne fit better.

  • @latrodectusmactans7592
    @latrodectusmactans7592 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    For Volibear's physical appearance, I imagine it's dependent the perspective you approach him from. Notice that all the horrifying descriptions of the Volibear are the scenes with Udyr's point-of-view. Udyr lost his former student to the demigod and therefore sees it as an all-consuming horror that he can hardly bear looking at. Sejuani probably saw a Volibear closer to the the League of Legends version, a mighty warrior who embodies Freljord's rage and pride. I think each perspective is just one aspect of a mighty being that defies mortal comprehension. The only ones who can truly see Volibear in his entirety are his fellow demigods.
    As someone who has never played League of Legends but got into the lore with Legends of Runeterra... I *love* this story. It's fantastic and all 3 of the champions in it (Udyr, Sejuani, and Volibear) are well-characterized in their own ways. Udyr is the hero conflicted by his role as both a father and a servant, Sejuani's ambition and strong familial relationships drive the story, and Volibear is a titan that inspires awe, horror, and curiosity.

    I think this is linked with the history of ornn.Could be in that moment Ornn was so pissed that he riped volibear apart and forced him to seek strenght again for some kind of ancient magic or the void.Or the real form of the demi gods of runeterra is abstract and they choose a form to speak with humans and when they are riped apart they turn back to what they were in the beggining.Or the history of ornns is just a legend but the batlle is real and the old volibear was ripped apart and volibear became more insane and tries to consume to be whole again.

      If Riot is going for an authentic mythology feel, that sort of contradiction would work. But both are supposed to be concrete characters in a world which "feels" like post-Tolkien fantasy, where its people are well-defined and internally-consistent (or as close as the author can manage), so yeah, that's weird.

    I was thinking that The Volibear is the radical, outgoing Ursine went overboard while the real Volibear resides in the utterly xenophobic, purist Ursine that most of the Freljord doesn't know.
    But who knows? The Civil War "Ursine" seems quite possible if Riot seems to want save the old Volibear along with The Volibear. Making Volibear a demigod with a duality, the Volibear who made the rivers and the seas, the Eye of the Storm and The Volibear, the eldritch horror, The Thousand-Pierced Bear.

  • @AladiahV97
    @AladiahV97 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    Well, Volibear being some kind of lovecraftian terror while being a demigod can be possible. I feel like a demigod like Ornn could turn into a twisted, unnatural eldritch horror if something terrible happens to them. And there is something that could do that, the other eldritch terror in The Freljord, The Watchers. I think that Volibear, ages before Lissandra, could confronted The Watcher, and that confrontation could've plant a seed on corruption on his mind. A corruption so powerful that not only made him fight his brother, but also twist his mind, his power and his very nature. Similar to what happened to Renekton, but in a more unnatural way, of course.

    • @diegosaez4885
      @diegosaez4885 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Little problem with that: Chronologically, the Watcher's first contact as per their retcon last year was with the Three Sisters, and physically manifested for the first time in the Howling Abyss to halt the Insurrection of the Three Sisters after the three wanted independence from the Watchers.
      In your defense though, that same retcon also made the Great Void War (Mt. Targon & Valoran vs. The Void) the biggest plot hole in the lore now, so take with a pinch of salt.

    So, for anyone who plays magic, I feel like Udyr would be gruul/green aligned, Ashe would be Selesnya aligned, Sejuani would probably also be gruul, but I can also see her as Naya, Volibear would be Rakdos, but Anivia and Ornn are 2 that I am having a hard time placing. Ornn, even if he has a lot of fire based powers because of his forge, I believe he would be more mono-white aligned than anything, and if you want to put him in a red-alignment I don't think he would be boros, and would most likely be jeskai to subdue any red impulsivity. Anivia I kinda see her as blue because of the whole frost thing, but she is kinda green or white given how she is portrayed in Nunu's lore, but I can't quite place her.

Any person, entity, or creature can put the mantle of "The Volibear" upon them and take on that role for better or worse depending on the vessel that chooses to take that on. Volibear, the champion, is a being that did that for his reasons and the creature in the story did it for their own reasons. Just because they refer to it as "The Volibear" rather than just Volibear as the name of someone. Imo.

    • @Davesknd
      @Davesknd 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@felixrivera895 Nothing fits the Freljord, since the Freljord was completely retconned twice. This isn't "slight change to better fit standing lore" this is (just like with Trundle) "we don't like this area... rip up some characters so we can contrive an event to make it fit". If you have so little regard for your own witting, sorry, you suck.

    • @Davesknd
      @Davesknd 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@demsterclippy4252 If that was enough to get me to leave, it might just be enough. The thing it: All those "fun" skins are just that: skins. They aren't the heart of the lore and design. The characters are. And they aren't fun in the way they used to be. Kinda like TB explained how the game lost it's ugliness, it also lost it's self-awareness. Example: Veigar was basically a huge parody of the EVIL WIZARD MAStERMIND. Now they have like 5 of them and Veigar has some tortured past to make him "serious".
      Most original characters were spins on tropes. Now they just are tropes.

    I would literally throw volibear into the garbage if that story ends up being canon. It's literally just an eldritch monster. He sounds more like a void monster trying to wear flesh which would be cool, but not at all for volibear. Volibear honestly should just get Aatrox's old character in that he's a war god who charges into battles he has no part in because he lives for it and people praise him hoping he'll come to their battle on their side.

    I'm like 99% sure that Udyr is not Sejuani's father. He is/was the shaman of her tribe and has been her mentor for a long time. He feels fatherly responsibility for her and swore to protect her, but I don't think that the is her actual father.
