There are pullover spots every few miles if you want to soak in what it is to stand right next to that much fresh water. It's not really a lake, it behaves like a sea, and the waves can be really impressive, and sometimes even intimidating. Also, there are streams coming down into the lake at least every mile or so... bridge on the highway going over it, most have some sort of waterfall you can check out - a few of them are really large and impressive, some more cute. Several historic lighthouses to check out. Split Rock lighthouse in particular is really neat. Partway down this ride (they claim to be going from Duluth to Grand Marais, but this footage was clearly from their _return_ trip going back to Duluth since lake is on the left and the road signs are not "mirrored"), you can stop at Lutsen Mountain - a pretty decent ski resort all things being equal; you can ride their gondola (even during summer) to the top for an amazing view out over the lake - you see various states and provinces off on the horizon. Its a baby mountain but the view is still great. Lots of random tourist trap diners (Betty's Pies) and beef/fish jerky stores along the way. Also, a few actual really high quality restaurants along the way - not diners, actual fancy stuff made by some CIA graduate living on the North Shore, etc. Stop at the lake.. search the rocks and try to find yourself a nice agate... it shouldn't be too hard, there are so many :D

What is so scenic about it? You only occasionally get glimpses of the lake.
There is only one way to find out
