    One clarification. At around 09:20 or so, I talk about batter strikeout and walk ratings. The qualities listed for strikeouts are correct. The qualities for batter walks should read: PATIENT, SEMI-PATIENT, [none], SEMI-EAGER, and EAGER.

    Though brief, I really like how you explained, and interpreted, and gave kind of a baseline to assign the delta/sigma ratings! As a beginner in trying to rate players/teams, that is one of the areas I am struggling to get a grip on, but I think you gave me a nice angle to consider in that process! Thank you!

      Thanks for your comment. You may have seen that I did a second HMB video that talks about playing the game with baseball cards. However, it also talks about ratings in a little more detail (but not delta/sigma).

      My personal interpretation of delta and sigma ratings is that they provide a way to "paint the picture" of players that are outliers in certain categories, in particular categories that are not well captured by the main qualities in the game. I believe the Player Creation guide estimates that a player with a delta value should see that event occur about 10 times in a full-time season, which works out to about once every 60 at bats, or once every 12 games or so. In other words, they are not a huge part of actual game results, but can add some extra "custom flair" when they do come up. (Sigma ratings, but the way, have the same frequency). To me, the delta and sigmas are as much about making the card of a "special" player pop, or adjusting results for a player from a different era. For instance, Rickey Henderson, in his peak SB years, could have a delta result that says: "SINGLE plus stolen base", meaning that when that delta result come up, Rickey singles and steals second without any further checks. Other good uses are for guys who hit a lot more triples than average (this video actually points this out, in the Omar Morena example), or guys like Ron Hunt, Don Baylor or Mark Canha, who get hit by pitches at extremely high rates. SUMMARY: Don't get hung up on assigning deltas and sigmas. They are great ways to visually represent when you feel like "I think this player should do (whatever) more than most). But if you decide create cards without ever using deltas and sigmas, your projects will not suffer.

    Not sure if you have yet, but it would be interesting for you to do a video on Fast Inning Baseball.

    HMB is a good game, especially with the ability to rate your own teams and players. Someone on Facebook has created a lot of NPB Japanese teams, which is a fun season collection not offered by most other companies.
    My one gripe in the ratings guide is the fielding assignment is pretty vague and doesn't offer a lot of language for players that play multiple positions. The cards sold by PLAAY typically only have one listed position with the ability to play them more or less anywhere else with a reduction to their carded fielding rating, which I'm not wild about.

      agree with the fielding ratings. i like to substitute in basic stratomatic ratings 1=gold, 2=semi gold, 3=none, 4=semi iron, 5 = iron. then i adjust pitchers ratings to compensate using a method i came up with. i think strat ratings are more reliable.

    • @justinludwig726
      @justinludwig726 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@iamthegreatcornholio7836 using the Strat ratings is an easy way to supplement for HMB fielding ratings. My only question is why so many consider Strat to be the “gold standard”, not sure what their fielding ratings are based on statistically that might make them the most accurate.

    • @iamthegreatcornholio7836
      @iamthegreatcornholio7836 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@justinludwig726 not sure. there is a good correlation between strat and Rtot (HMB) i've found...usually. but there are exceptions. Rtot might include some luck as some fielders get more balls hit to them over a season. i suppose strat uses reputation as well as stats. look at Rtot on baseball reference for any given player. you'll probably see a lot of variation from season to season. of course nothing is perfect. but i think strat puts a fair amount of effort into their ratings. i just have a lot of confidence in strat. i hate the 50/50 batter-pitcher engine strat uses, however.

    • @Funkipotimus
      @Funkipotimus ปีที่แล้ว

      @@iamthegreatcornholio7836 HMB actually uses rtot/yr. A subtle distinction, but it is a different column in BB ref, and means that they base fielding on a rate-based stat, not a counter stat.

    • @Funkipotimus
      @Funkipotimus ปีที่แล้ว

      True, Brien's NPB sets are pretty awesome. And yes, the guide uses a player's total rtot/yr, which can be found on the fielding page of a given team (1994 Expos-->Fielding will show all players on the team, with a column for rtot/yr). This means that in HMB, each player receives one grade based on their total defense across all positions they played.
      Outfielders actually have some additional flavor to their fielding, as the "Outfield Drama" chart will sometimes check an OF's speed rating to see if he gets to the ball.
      As far as playing players out of position: this is really up to you, and what feels right in your project. In general, a player should not play a position that is radically out of line with what they typically play (Greg Luzinski should never play SS). And the general rule of thumb is not to play a player at a position for which they are not rated. (NOTE: most card sets have players rated with a single position designation, but it could be a broad category like "OF", "MI" or "UT". The Cooperstown collection and some other sets will give a few players a slash designation, like "C/3B" or "1B/LF"). I believe the Instructions make reference to how you can assign "out of position" penalties however you see fit. But a good place to start is to make the player that is out of position IRON. You can also make him COLD while he is out of position (his overall discomfort may impact his performance at the plate) and make his team DISSONANT when in the field.

    Steve, did you end up getting and playing this game? My current games are Strat, Season Ticket Baseball, Payoff Pitch, Batter Up and Baseball Classics. I'm looking for my next game I want to experience. I considered this one. What other game or games besides the one I mentioned would you pick next if it was your choice?

    • @steve_etzel
      @steve_etzel  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I have the basic HMB results booklet and some sample cards in PDF form so I may be able to play a basic game, but I think I would need the other charts to get the true feel for the game. I can see the appeal for some people, as the game unfolds somewhat like a story. I would probably enjoy this game the most if I played head-to-head with somebody. Your current selection of games is good, and I'm familiar with most of them. I've been studying APBA to try to appreciate why it is loved so much. If you like the "result board" aspects of Batter Up, you may like APBA. If you like the pitcher-batter interaction of Batter Up, then you might like Sports Illustrated baseball. There is lots of free stuff on SI Baseball in the Facebook group by that name. Some people like Replay Baseball, but I haven't tried that.

    are pitcher's ERA's that are used to get ratings (ACE, WORKMAN etc.) corrected for team fielding range (which affects hits given up)?

    • @steve_etzel
      @steve_etzel  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      No, not that I’m aware of. That would be a level of statistical sophistication that I don’t think this game strives for. Just yesterday I read
      someone’s suggestion to use WHIP for the main pitcher rating. That seems to make some sense, although there seems to be some overlap given that there is a separate walk-based rating.

      I should add that I do make that type of adjustment for defense in my spreadsheet for the sports illustrated baseball game. There it is pretty easy to calculate the effect that team defense has on pitcher performance.

    • @DetTigers1094
      @DetTigers1094 ปีที่แล้ว

      No, The Pitchers ERA effects his overall experience for the season or overall career. So for example, if Pitcher A had a 1.12 ERA, and he was an ICON up to the current season, his ERA will be somewhere between 0.75 and 1.10 ERA due to his ICON Experience and his qualities may either stay (having either a neutral/blank experience quality) or change.
