There is no reason to say you cannot speak fluent BM. There are so many Bangladeshi speak better BM than Malaysian Chinese. If we wish to gain the respect, we Malaysian Chinese should start to mix with more Malay friends. It helps. Do not limit yourself in so-called "Chinese" circle.

The give away is always the use of "kamu". No matter how good your standard Johor Riau Malay accent is the use of kamu is a dead give away for a non Malay.
Chinese/Indian kelantan can speak malay in kelantanese dialect so well you can't even distinguish them with malay kelantan. Also the same for some people in kedah and perak.
Rural Chinese are always need to assimilate with other races. Nothing special, its the way to survive. You can find them in whole Malaysia in rural area, they got local thick accent. Its the Urban Chinese that just wont mingle other races
i went to study at smk in kelantan for a year, in the year 0f 2001. i was shocked, by how hard it is to differentiate between malay and chinese unless you know their real name in the ic. chinese boys with kampung names such as pok him, abe chu, pok wan, mat boon, these tanned skin boys were among my friends when i first got there who i thought they were malay. later i found out that in my school three big groups were always involved in fights. but each group consists of malay,siam and chinese, and there is no group consisting of one race. For example if chinese clashed with other chinese from a different group the malay kids from their own gang would come for backup. The same goes for malays, the chinese will come down. not only that, my strict bahasa melayu cikgu is a chinese man who is a proud fanatic of sastera melayu. truth is, you cant identify chinese,siam and indian kelantan in public. they kinda look alike and sound the same. they brew very well there.

It's true about knowing who is the real Malay is by asking them what's their favourite food. In my opinion no matter how much a non Malay like Malay food, it's very rare the non Malay tells you that they like masak lemak or to make it short tells you the masakan kampung by their name.

Ba alif ba ya in malay means babi. It's just like the old korean using chinese characters/words in writing during dynasties but they read it in Korean, only later they used hangul for their writings. 其实要从讲马来语中分辨出真马来人还是其他种族是很容易(除了东马和吉打一部分华人)。很多字确实会听到他们“缩短”起来讲,不会像华人/印度人照着“课本”一个字一个字这样读出。Terima Kasih很多会说成「Ma sih」。在哪里不会说”di mana”,会说“kat mana”(dekat读快成kat)。就像我们华人讲华语,有些词会快到缩短起来讲。
