    This is one I did to my strat, along with wiring up the neck tone pot to work on the bridge pickup as well. So what I get is a tone control on the bridge in pos. 1 or 2 and the tone on the neck in 4 and 5. In 6 or 7, the neck pot becomes a master tone for neck and bridge, tele style. In any position that involves the middle pickup(2,3,4,7), it retains it original, independent tone control.

    I've done a lot of searching, but I like your videos the best. Very clear and easy to follow. You really seem to know your craft, so thought I'd ask for some advice for the best way to configure my guitar with the parts I have. I really like this 7-way strat (or maybe even the nine) but was hopping to maybe include a push/pull for a little in/out phase, and/or a blend pot. So here is what I have to play with: 3 single coils, a 5-way selector, 3 A250k pots, 1 B250k pot (not sure what the diff is between A & B), 1 A250k push/pull dpdt pot, 1 Blending pot, and a 2A473J cap (might pick up another if suggested). The pick guard is setup for three knobs, but a fourth could fit comfortably if needed. Anyway, hope i wasn't to long winded and thank you in advance.

    I am definitely doing this when I get ready to put my guitar back together. I have a J. Reynolds guitar that is a direct Strat copy. It was my very first guitar (almost 12 years now). It's not the best quality guitar, but it's my first and my dad bought it for me so a friend of mine talked me into refurbishing it. I've been researching for days on ideas of what I might want to do. I'm going with some new pickups, I'm in the process of sanding the body right now and plan to paint it later this week, and probably going to order a custom neck from Warmoth customs. I saw a video earlier of a guy who did this with a Strat he had and it sounded absolutely amazing. Now that I've found the video that explains how to do it, I'm in. Thanks for this video, very informative.

    Great schematic and clear instruction/video. This is the mod I think David Gilmore uses with all three pickups on his black start. I'm going to give it a whirl on one of my axes with lace pickups.
    Good job and thanks so much.

    Wow. This is so cool. This is a really cool idea. If you did it with a push pull pot on the tone pot for the middle pickup, down there by the jack, then there would be no new holes, and no little switch to hit your hand on. For me, I do not like things sticking up and getting in the way. Another option would be those flatter switches like on a Jaguar, but I do not like those. Those little toggle switches are hard to deal with in that they can melt when trying to solder them. Plus they are fragile.

    I finally just did this successfully. Tip for you if you have the pickups working 7 tone but you can't get the switch to work as in it won't go back to normal strategy mode. Try legs 4 and 5 instead of one and two. worked for me thanks for the tutorial.

    • @Subtle-System
      @Subtle-System 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      What do you mean? Can you be more specific? Mine didn't work as advertized... I only get bridge middle, all three and neck and bridge... But I lost all other configurations and I followed the tutorial to the letter... I hate this is such a short tutorial with no more explenations or demos.... Wish there were more out there...

  • @duratoke
    @duratoke 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    Exactly what was looking for, simple toggle wiring add-on. I have a micro toggle switch, sunk so that only the tip is sticking through the p/g about an 1/8" it has a small rectangular, or oblong hole for the toggle to move in. This comes through between the pots and the selector. and is just wide enough to flip it. This was done by using a piece of sheet metal about 2 1/2 inches wide, and having it bent into a z type shape with two of the pots holding it to the p/g and the bent part, which is about an inch wide, carrying the micro toggle. Which even though it is "micro" still would normally be sticking up a good 1/2 inch or more if the threaded base and all is attached directly to the p/g. If this makes any sense, hope it helps someone looking for a way to lower a toggle switch so maybe it isn't inadvertently flipped so easy. I'm going to now add in a piece of PCB board somehow (maybe have to make another wider piece of sheetmetal) which will include a socket, so I can change out the capacitor.

    HEY DON, BEEN WATCHING THESE VIDS EVERY TIME I WANT TO WIRE UP MY GUITARS.
    2 QUESTIONS:
    1}CAN I USE A KILL SWITCH BUTTON THAT HAS LED LIGHTS FOR TURNING OFF/ON EACH PICKUP; DELETING THE 5 WAY TOGGLE; BUT ADD SOME MINI 3 WAY SWITCHES TO INDUCE OUT OF PHASE, PARALLEL/SERIES, AND ANY OTHER FUN IDEAS U CAN COME UP WITH??
    2} I HAVE SOME FISHMAN FLUENCE SINGLES/HUMBUCKERS AND WOULD LOVE TO SEE A SERIES WITH YOUR EXPERTISE DOING A HSH AND OTHER COMBOS?

    Just did this the other day, only I added tone for the bridge with a .22 uF cap and its a push pull with this same switch only within a knob on your guitar. I think the bridge tone mod is called the Eric Johnson mod... also did the neck up with the middle tone and the middle pup is just wide open hooked up to just the volume, no tone. The perfect strat set up if I do say so myself.

I went step by step and found no less that five f-ups I had made. It is now dead silent as to unwanted noises and has come to life as to so many choices now :>) Merry Christmas.You made my day,Thank you very much.

    also got a strat with 3 Hot Rails 4 wire humbuckers - add 1 toggle to split all 3 back to Single coil and you get All 5 stock SSS tone combos - fyi - having an ANGLED Humbucker at Bridge will be everyone's "AHA" moment... esp if u give it access to Tone Control - beats the Fender "Blacktop" HH layout that uses a 5 way to split coils

    I got this mode to my guitar four years ago using the push pull button to add the neck pick up at any time... thought up the whole thing myself then got my guitar repair guy to do it... and in addition to this i have push pull on the 2nd tone knob to attenuate the bridge pickup.

  • @blackbrooke
    @blackbrooke 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Excellent, very well presented. However unless youre only playing country it doesnt give you any of the pickup combinations that would make a strat an all-round guitar for the cover band/session musician. I have seen a similar use of a pull/push where positions 2&4 are full humbucking and sound like the bridge and neck pickups on a les paul. Into a clean amp they give you a fatter warmer sound BUT into an overdriven amp or pedal the difference is huge and you can play everything from Dire Straits to Gary Moore with the same guitar. It also isan invisible mod and doesnt change the look of your guitar. If you can afford a Fender S1 switch it is even better and simple to activate on the fly. Nice video presentation though, Ive never seen a more well presented example explaining strat switching mods.

  • @jeffbeck6501
    @jeffbeck6501 ปีที่แล้ว

    I think this video asks a second question, and that is what is the best type of switch to put in a guitar to compliment the regular pickup selector switch. That is for another video, but it is a great question, because people have figured out how to get new sounds with the wiring by adding an extra switch. The question now is what is the best type of switch to install.

  • @jeffbeck6501
    @jeffbeck6501 ปีที่แล้ว

    What about a mod that could put the bridge and middle pickup out of phase but in series, so it would be like a humbucker, and do the same with the middle and neck pickup. I listened to the demo of your 7 way switch wiring and I liked the sound of all 3 pickups on a clean sound. I have never heard that before.

  • @dcap4545
    @dcap4545 10 ปีที่แล้ว

    I made a slight adjustment to this mod so that I could have tone control over the bridge position and was wondering if there are any ill effects... Instead of going from lug 2 of the 5-way to lug 1 of the bottom tone control, I went from lug 1 of the 5-way to lug 1 of the bottom tone. This way, the only position I don't have tone control over is the middle only position. I haven't strung it back up yet, but everything seems to work right when I do the screwdriver tap test. Am I sacrificing anything else besides the mid position tone control when I do this? Thanks so much for making these videos! I've learned a lot from just watching a few!

    • @BrejaToneWorks
      @BrejaToneWorks  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey there...
      I'm not sure if I'm thinking about the right lug that you're referring to but the 1st Lug (B1) on the right side of the 5-way is a common lug (corresponds to A4). You wouldn't want to use it for tone. Watch this video and you'll see how to get individual tone on the bridge and keep another for neck/middle: HSS Strat w/7-Way, Dual Cap and Coil Split Mods
      Don

    • @dcap4545
      @dcap4545 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Breja ToneWorks I think what I mean is lug A1 on the 5way (first one on the left that the bridge pup is wired directly to). So, the way it's set up in this video, I basically have the green wire that's coming from the tone pot going to the switch lug that the bridge pickup is wired to instead of the lug that the mid pickup is wired to. That dual cap mod seems to be the ideal setup for me, so I'll probably just do that eventually. Thanks for the reply, Don!

  • @jbauer315

    Awesome video! Question: What is the end result if one were to combine this mod with a Treble Bleed on the "Volume" pot?

    • @BrejaToneWorks
      @BrejaToneWorks  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey Joseph... Don't take this as me being sarcastic, but you'd basically get a treble bleed along with 7 pickup combinations. Unless you have a HB in your guitar, I personally haven't found much use in a treble bleed because the SCs are pretty bright to begin with. Treble Bleeds sound best to my ears when used with Humbuckers. This mod just simply adds 2 more pickup combinations. I do have another video with this mod along with a Dual Cap mod which adds a separate tone control for your bridge pickup and combines the neck/middle into the other tone control. But there's nothing with this mod that would prevent you or require you to add the treble bleed. The treble bleed is completely independent. Let me know if you have any other questions and thanks for watching.Don

    • @jbauer315
      @jbauer315 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Breja ToneWorks I thought that would be your response, haha! I had asked because after I had the 7 way mod in, I decided to also add the treble bleed, but took it out because in the bridge/neck and neck/middle combo, I had lost a lot of lows(realized that wasn't the culprit). After looking over the caps I had installed, I realized I put the wrong values in. Put a 224 in rather than a 225(which ironically I have on hand. Going to leave the TB off, because I find it sounds fine as is, but will go back in when the next string change come up, and I will put the proper cap in. Honestly, I kinda like the way it sounds! Anyway, thanks for the reply!

    I just don't understand why you jumped the bridge to the common on the right side of the 5-way switch. Also sometimes I'm not sure what you mean by position 1 etc. To me it's the traditional bridge position and position 5 is the neck.

    I see a jumper between the 2 tone pots on my guitar and on other strat diagrams.
    Then sometimes I don't see one. If Tone (1) is the middle pickup and Tone (2) is the neck, why have a jumper? It seems this would bleed them together......right?
    I also see some with the neck and the bridge wired up leaving the middle out (this set-
    up usually leaves the jumper out). Bet you could make a whole video on this subject.
    Thanks in advance, if you could shed some light on this.

    • @BrejaToneWorks
      @BrejaToneWorks  9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The jumper is only used if you wish to have 2 pickups sharing a tone pot. In this particular mod that not happening so there isn't a jumper but let's say you wanted to have the middle and neck share one pot and the bridge the other, you'd have a jumper installed. The wiring on this switch right now isn't for having the right side of the switch really in use for tone control. Hey Caliche...
      Is your goal to keep the EJ tone controls as is? Did you check out my combo video on this 7-way and Dual-Cap mod? It does basically the same thing except T1 also affects the middle pickup. I personally like that mod the best because the bridge can have it's own tone control AND it's own cap. Thank you so much for posting these, I have used these to wire my strats with the 7 position mod. I'm starting a new project strat and forgive me if this sounds crazy, but can we please see a 9 way strat with three push/pull pots and the dual cap mod? All the series on one tone pot and all the parallel on the other as well as a 'neck on' for the standard strat mode on the volume pot?
    Or a way to use your existing 9 way strat mod with the on/on/on switch but have all the series in say the 'up' position and all the parallel in the 'down' position with a push pull or on/off switch for neck on in standard strat mode?

    I’m going to do a 7 way switch upgrade soon as possible, but I have a very important question :
    How do tone knobs work after this?? neck/middle? or they don’t work? if the switch is on? if it is off?

      Hey Marco...
      If you're doing just this mod, the tone controls are the same as a normal strat - no difference. I do have a 7-way mod that includes my Dual Cap mod so that the bottom tone control would affect only the bridge and the other controls the neck/middle.

      Yeah - I never understood why Fender never had tone for the Bridge since it's always the brightest of the pups. Of the three pups on a Strat, the one I personally think needs a tone control the least is the middle.

      Mini pots or dual ganged pots would do the trick too to get you a total of 3-tone controls. Fitting them in the cavity and drilling out the pickguard would be the only issues.

    Hi! I'd like to do this in a guitar with HSS configuration 1 volume pot and 1 tone pot. The guitar has 2 potentiometer 500k. Is it possible to do this 7 way mod with a push pull in volume pot? And also I wanna do the coil split humbucker mod with a push pull tone pot! Can you help with a diagram? I don't know how to do to link one mod with the other!!!

    Hi! Thanks for sharing this. I have a strat-type guitar (Peavey Raptor Plus EXP HSS, 1 vol 1 tone pots, 5 position switch). Could I assume there´ll be no problem if the neck+bridge position is the humbucker and the single and not single+single as in sss strats? Thanks again!
    To put this simpler, I would just want to use the bridge Humbucker with the single neck, is there a way to accomplish that? Thanks again!

    Cool tutorial. Thanks! I’m planning on doing this mod to my Strat with a push pull (I can’t bear to modify the pick guard on their; I haven’t been able to find another like it). Question- the potentiometer I got is a 500k as opposed to the 250s that are in there now (the pickups are all still stock). Will the 500k pot work, or will it just alter the sound way too much?

    • @StratMatt777
      @StratMatt777 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      If you have a humbucker pickup you want to use 500K to make sure that all of its output can come through. It can make the single coils be a little brighter, but it doesn't bother me. This could be wrong, but I think it only matters on the volume control. I'm not certain. I'm not Breja Tone Works.

    The 7 position is cool. I'm going to take it one step further to put in a pushbutton switch that will allow me to bypass the volume pot all together. Too often I accidently roll off the volume. At a cost of less than $3 what can I lose...

      If the intention is to keep the Middle/Neck as parallel and the Middle/Bridge in Series, you'd have to use a 5-Way SuperSwitch or add a switch somewhere.

    Hi, great mod which I’ve just completed today using s push/pull pot. Unfortunately I’ve obviously done something wrong as most switch positions pushed or pulled seem to have all pups selected. Everything that should be earthed/grounded is, all soldered connections are good. Any ideas?

    • @TheForce_Productions
      @TheForce_Productions 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hi. Just in case take a manifier and check if a little piece of solder could drop down inside the 5-way switch. If yes, i'm afraid you'll need to replace it. Hope it helps.

      Obi Wan Kenobi Turns out I was relying on the copper shielding in the pup cavities and on the back of the scratchplate as my only source of grounding. Whilst continuity checked out ok it wasn’t good enough. Proper grounding using wire did the job though! 👍🏻

      @BrejaToneWorks  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      No issue with using a different ground point. Just make sure all your ground leads terminate there though. Don't have 5 on the Tone pot and 1 on the Vol. Best of luck...

    • @larrymorgan6778
      @larrymorgan6778 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      You mean my ground leads for the jack and claw? This is kind of the wiring i'm basing it on. guitarnuts2.proboards.com/thread/6423. Someone is using the S1 for something else but is grounding the pickups to the middle tone pot (for lack of room on the vol i think). Is this an acceptable wiring schematic to use? Thanks again.

    • @BrejaToneWorks
      @BrejaToneWorks  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Larry Morgan
      Hey Larry... Here's what you want. Take the back of one of your tone pots - that'll be our ground point. Take a wire from the Claw to this Tone Pot Ground - this will ground the bridge and strings. From each pickup, you take the ground wire and attach it to the Tone Pot Ground - this will ground the pickups. Take a wire from every other pot to the Tone Pot Ground - this grounds each pot. From the Output jack, take the ground wire to the Tone Pot Ground - this will ground the output. What you are doing is ensuring that all components involved in the electrical circuit are grounded to a single point - it's considered a Star ground. This will result in the lowest amount of electric hum or buzz that your guitar produces. Technically you should ground the 5-way switch or any other switch too in the same manner. Most people don't ground the 5-way switch though. A lot of guys will rely upon the foil on the bottom of the pickguard to ground the switch. Hope this helps... Don

    • @SpiritDrive
      @SpiritDrive 8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The Fender fanatic 97
      I already have a 3way switch to coil split my bridge humbucker. When I tried to apply this particular mod in this video to the already modified circuit (having all 3 pickups fire at the same time and just the outer pickups) I used a push/pull pot in addition to the 3way switch. The problem I encountered was that the switch was always powering the humbucker no matter what. I think the mod you want to do, Breja has a video on if not this one. Coil splitting a humbucker can be done with many devices and I'm pretty sure Breja tone works has covered it in a video.

    • @ricklavigne4466
      @ricklavigne4466 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Breja ToneWorks The wiring hasn't been altered. The 2000 american standard comes with the no load pot in the 2nd tone pos. It works with the bridge pickup. I like the sound now but I also like the idea of the 7 way option. I just don't want to alter the sound I have now.

    • @BrejaToneWorks
      @BrejaToneWorks  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +rick lavigne Are you sure it's a No-Load pot and not the TBX Pot? In any case, the 7-way mod would not affect the tone or volume controls. The mini-switch is just engaging the Bridge Pickup in positions 4 and 5. So - when you have the switch off, there is zero impact to your guitar's tone.

      +Liam Robins I'm not entirely sure I understand you, Liam. This particular mod is only for the addition of the Neck pickup so that you get the NECK/MIDDLE/BRIDGE or BRIDGE/NECK combinations. It won't do anything for Series/Parallel. For that - you'd need some additional components.

    • @ricklavigne4466
      @ricklavigne4466 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      On your wiring diagram it looks like the first tone is wired to the neck pickup and the second to the middle pickup and no tone on the bridge. On the 2000 fender standard stats the second tone controls both middle and bridge pickups. I don't want to change that but I also like the 7 way mod. What is described above is called the Gilmour Mod. This way it appears I can get the 7 way mod without having to sacrifice the tone on my bridge pickup. So I was looking for some insight to this. Thanks. Oh and the way the tone is connected to both the bridge and middle there's a jumper wire from lug 6 to 7 on the switch.
