  • Join me as I spend $100 on some rare and exciting graphics cards that I found in a local listing on Facebook Marketplace.
Did I get ripped off?? Did I actually get a steal of a deal?? Lets find out!

Good going on the lovely x1950 xtx. Last year i cleared out a music studio that had 22 gpus, 3 dead motherboards and 2 cpus for a asking price of €100 which i happily paid. The cpus worked and 1 motherboard was fixed quickly. For the gpus 17 of them worked after some repairs like soldering as these also had missing parts on the pcb. One turned out to be a xfx geforce 6800 ultra that has the core and vram speeds of a unreleased geforce 6800 ultra extreme and no fan profile as it always runs at 100% although i can change it with software. 3 cards worked again after reflowing the core solder balls. Of which also a 8800 gtx. If nothing else helps give the core some flux and blast it a bit with a heatgun. If nothing helps it is still great to have some donor cards for parts.

Wow great job on the 6800U!! Was it PCIe or AGP?

@@big-ts-tech-corner The pci-e happily. One core cpus like agp systems bottleneck the heck out of these.

A second moral to the story is there is no way they were "working last time I tried them." LoL.

It was actually a system I got at a flee market for 100,- Norwegian Kroner that kinda kickstarted my nostalgia kick, it had a X1950 XTX(thank god you got that working!) in it, at the time I didn't really think too much off it, but when I realized how good it was, ran some older titles on it, it really got me to appreciate not only older hardware, but also low-midrange stuff, like how you can make a pretty good 2007 era PC with low end 2013-2014 hardware.
But yeah sometimes you take a chance and you'll win some and lose some, I got pretty lucky buying a Geforce 6800 Ultra AGP with no cooler, and untested. It worked perfectly, but I've also gotten plenty of duds.(rip HD 2900 XT)

Thats awesome about the 6800U AGP!! I'm kicking myself even years later for killing my first 6800U. It was such an easy repair but at the time I didn't have the right tools or knowledge to fix it and ended up killing it with the magic smoke sealing its fate :c

You can retrace that missing pads, at first is hard. You can try for the first time on broken PCBs (obvious). Is not as easy but you can use creativity + skill, good video anyways!

what do you use your retro builds for?

90% old games 10% old software / specific uses like bridge systems, dumping CDs, imaging hard drives, testing gpus and modifying them
