I *was paid* to be at this World Series. I was a vendor walking up and down the stands. I was there when Magglio hit that game winner in the ALCS. Best job I ever had!
You’re right about the World Series being very “mid” this year. But you’re dead wrong about this team being a “bleh” team. You have to realize that three years prior the Tigers went 43-119 and looked forever doomed, not making a playoff appearance since 1987. That Tigers team came out of nowhere. It was loaded with talent. Verlander won the ROY, Joel Zumaya was hitting 105 before a guy named Chapman did that on a regular basis, the line up was loaded with talent. Pudge, Chris Shelton with his amazing one month, later replaced by Sean Casey, one of the best pure hitters I’ve ever watched in Placido Polanco, Carlos Gullien, that bum Brandon Inge had his best season ever, Craig Monroe - who hit 17! 17! Home runs in the 7th inning or later that season, 27 on the year, Granderson, who was a budding star and the always dependable Ordonez. That was not just some “meh” team. That was a great squad filled with young and the right vets. They needed Leyland to bring it all together and they did. And that’s another thing, Leyland hadn’t managed in SIX YEARS! In his first year back he takes a team that hadn’t won anything in almost 2 decades to the World Series. Good video, but man, you got that part wrong.
If you’re not from Detroit you wouldn’t understand. 06 was one of the most magical years ever. Complete turnaround from being one of the worst teams ever assembled in the early 00s. The 06 team had great chemistry, tons of characters, comeback wins and just exciting baseball all year. That 06 summer has some of my most cherished memories watching the Tigers.
Counterargument: The series is really interesting in its display of perhaps the most favored team in World Series history (to that point) systematically imploding one game at a time. Anthony Reyes (the worst World Series Game 1 starter of all time?) beating a future HOFer, and then Detroit's comedy of errors in St. Louis make things more interesting than, say, the 2007 World Series a year later
Tbf to the Cardinals regular season record, they had dominated the two previous years with essentially the same team. They just had a lot of injuries during the 06 season, but had their dominant lineup fully healthy for the first time all season once the playoffs started.
Little late here - I totally understand where you’re coming from! I am a Birdinals fan and I believe that if you make October baseball, you’ve got a shot. I’m pretty certain this ‘06 team was the worst record to ever win a WS, but bargain ball is still how the Birdinals do it (sorta) - stay in contention, make playoffs, maybe pull something out your ass. Cardinals have money but act like they don’t. Idk, I just love baseball and hope it does well hahaha.
I watched the official film at least 100 times as a little kid. This series made me fall in love with baseball, it's fun to see it in a broader context.
I put this on in the background and 12 seconds into the video I started thinking... "Why do I hear Dick Gumshoe's theme?" I'm not playing Ace Attorney right now.
Awesome video, I'm a huge Tigers fan and was 13 during the 2006 season. Mags walk off will always be a core memory for me. It was fun to relive some of it. Unfortunately for us we had a great season that ended with a whimper. Earned a like and subscribe from me! 👍🏻⚾
I remember my mom always had good morning America on in the morning before I went to school and all they had to say was "Detroit and St.Louis" had the highest crime rates in the USA and they were playing in the world Series I was and always have been a cardinals fan, I've grown up through the best era in cardinals history can't complain.
My take on the 2006 Cardinals and this series is different. Their margin of success was so slim that individual performances by role players were vital. If Ronnie Belliard hadn't made the magnificent play he made in the San Diego series. . .If Taguchi hadn't hit the homer in the Met series. . .If Spiezio hadn't tripled in the Met series. . . If Eckstein hadn't been johnny-on-the-spot during the Series. That is what makes baseball great. (At least it was great until recent, idiotic rule changes that have ruined the game.)
That series between the Tigers and Yankees was so special, it could be a video of its own. Love that you included the clip of Leyland kissing his wife through the screen and a fan going for a peck, too.
That Tigers team was on fire during the first two rounds of the playoffs. Sitting for a week they went completely cold. You'll never convince me Detroit doesn't win if they'd gone right into the series. Detroit's lineup went from hitting almost .300 as a team to under .200 in the series. That wasn't because of an all star pitching lineup by the Cardinals.
cards a legacy franchise in the nl at the time winning after 24 years with prime albert was special since the past couple nl winners since the mid 90's were new teams marlins twice even the braves were not an atlanta specific legacy team until they won it all and the fact pug and jv were on the tigers makes it iconic looking back with two great managers...
Nah, Pujols owned Lidge’s soul til about 2008… then he got it back by besting the… Tampa Bay Rays? And was on the mound for the final out of the World Series. And he made 53,000,000 in salary over 600 innings pitched in ten seasons. Yeah Pujols is one of the best players of all time but Lidge got paid and got a ring.
I literally only watched this because I saw David Eckstein. I absolutely loved watching him play in Pawtucket and wished we'd kept him around in Boston. Loved his hustle.
Watching the pitchers throw the ball all over the field and puke the series away l, was brutal. The fact you don’t know the reason the tigers were so good that year, is questionable
The White Sox World Series from the previous year was MUCH more exciting. Especially Games 2 and 4. EDIT: It is worth mentioning that I wish baseball fans watched the World Series regardless of which teams. They need to be more committed.
I watched the World Series movie MLB made about the 06 Cardinals approximately a 1000 times as a kid it’s what got me into baseball I still love So Taguchi because of it
I remember my dad having to come tell me and my friend to watch the last 3 outs becuase we could care less about the games, and the sad thing is we lived 30 miles away from STL.
I think its fair to say the 2006 NLCS very much overshadowed the World Series from the sheer epicness of game 7. The WS wasn't that bad though. At least it wasn't a sweep. Now the Cardinals in the 2011 world series is probably one of the best series of all time.
full disclosure: i'm a bitter Tigers fan, but maaaaannnn we were SOOOO much better than y'all that year... just melted down in the World Series. GG, Cards!
Yeah, even as a fan of the Cards and seeing my first Cardinals WS victory in 2006 (not old enough to have been around in 1982), even at the time, I thought "This World Series was kinda lame" lmao. But hey, we got 2011 five years later, so it's okay.
The 2004-2009 world series was a 6 year stretch in which the result was 4-0 or 4-1. '04 was exciting for Red Sox fans ending the title drought but obviously the ALCS was much more memorable. I don't watch much baseball during the season- just highlights- but like to catch a couple world series games. These matchups were dreadful though. Now I don't really even watch the world series until game 4 and that's only if it's 2-1
O I’m sorry was Verlander, Pujos, Pudge, Rodgers, Ordonez, Rollen, I could go on. Along with 2 historic teams with World Series history together. Along with both being underdog stories wasn’t exciting enough for you.
I look at this series as Cardinals getting payback for whatever voodoo the Red Sox were using two years before. Seriously being down 3-0 to the Yankees then coming back to win 8 straight, don't tell me someone didn't make a deal with the devil on that team.
Great video. As a Cards fan I do agree is was boring but I was 29 yrs old and waiting for so long to see another championship from them. I will take this. You did mention even though Cards season was bad, 2004 was a year that they should have won and 2005 slipped away from a hot Astros team. Either way you look at this, between 04 - 06, Cards were bound to win at least one. Add 3 future Hall of Famers (Molina will get there soon) with Rolen and Pujols, a HOF manager with LaRussa and a should have been Hall of Famer with Edmonds, that’s a really good team. If you ask my opinion, I forget the 2013 WS. Hated that series. We all knew Red Sox were going to win again and Matheny did not know what the heck he was doing.
Sounds like bitter grapes to me... how super intetesting would it had been if the Tigers won it in three as the east coast media proclaimed? So the proverbial David sleighing Goliath in five games is boring, but the giant stomping out the man is exciting? The east coast media was embarassed by this World Series, as are you...
Mets fan here knew that if things went differently we would have three rings still hurts to this day and will hurt forever even if we win another ws how easy that series would have been if we beat st. louis
I love the usage of ACE ATTORNEY MUSIC!!!! Didn’t think anyone who watches the MLB has also played ACE ATTORNEY!!! Just for that alone Like and Sub from me 👍
As far as World Series entertainment goes the final out to clinch the best of 7 if you’re a cardinals fan makes going 7 irrelevant. As a Cubs fan I’d have greatly preferred a clean sweep instead of the stress of being down 3-1 and the emotional roller coaster of game 7.
Ehh it wasn’t a great series but it wasn’t that random. Sure Cardinals snuck in but they always do. Tigers were on year #1 of a ten year run of being debatably the best team in baseball of this century so far with rampant all stars and several future hall of famers seeing several playoff berths and two pennants during that time. 2007 WS was worse as well as a few between 2014-2020
id say its a matter of opinion. and as a cardinals fan it wasnt uninteresting at all. your take on the wins loss records show just how much better baseball used to be.
You're not allowed to say this when the 2012 World Series exists. In terms of on paper win/loss the Cardinals were the biggest Underdog of any Wild Card Era playoffs and won it all. You can't fault them for winning, fault the teams who apparently were so much better yet lost to Anthony Reyes and Jeff Weaver lol
Respectfully disagree. 06 World Series changed my life forever. My first date with my future wife was on Friday October 13 2006. We had multiple dates during the WS and she even suggested we pick places that had the games on. Odd behavior for a blossoming relationship and here we are 18 years later. She did kinda kill it shortly after when she wanted to watch the movie Fever Pitch but she's a Floridian and never followed baseball so I forgave her
I'd say the 2007 World Series was worse. The Rockies didn't even show up.
No, they were outclassed by a really good Red Sox team.
2023s sucked ngl
@@user-Noct Yeah, but at least it had a fantastic first game and saw a long-suffering team hoist the trophy.
they were a buzzsaw until they got to the big show, remember the play in game against SD? Holliday's headfirst slide home was epic

I enjoyed every second of it. It was my generations first time seeing the Cards win the World Series. I will never forget the night of Game 5 🎉
The 2006 NLCS had total 1988 NLCS vibes. Poor Mets.
6:18 the greatest 12-6 changeup in mlb history
As a Tigers fan, this one still hurts so much.
I shake my head at how the Tigers teams from here til the mid-10s never won a title, they were so stacked.
The Tigers’ bullpen cost them the AL pennant in 2013.
Not getting swept in 2012 would've been nice
My Tigers were a flop in 06 & 12.
