The beach scene is an homage to a Joan Crawford movie from the 1940’s “Humoresque “ Joan’s character drowns herself because of a failed love affair. Thankfully stronger Madonna just washes away the bad vibes with the help of the sea. The ocean theme is carried throughout: her pearl jewelry, the recurring wave effect, the blue tint, even the light on the beach. Her stunning makeup by Kevin Aucoin. Her emotional vocals on point. Awesome reaction 👏👏
Her makeup in this video is by Kevyn Aucoin. Aucoin, who died in 2002, was the preferred makeup artist of many celebrities and top models in the 90's, including Whitney Houston, Cher, Cindy Crawford, Liza Minnelli, Courtney Love, Tina Turner, Janet Jackson, and Naomi Campbell. He authored several industry-defining books with makeup techniques including facial contouring, which was relatively unknown in popular culture at the time, but pioneered and used in drag culture and stage makeup for decades. Aucoin, often noted as being decades ahead of his contemporaries, is considered to be one of greatest make-up artists of the modern age.
This is actually a part of a trilogy. Frozen-the power of goodbye and to have and not to hold. On frozen she's struggling trying to make the relationship survives, but she realizes his heart is frozen. Then on TPOGB she finally takes the decision and in the end on To have and not to hold she analyzes how they were on that relationship and why it was so difficult to end it up
Wow, thank you so much for sharing this; I like to think that I’m a very avid fan and appreciate this contribution because it makes an undeniable link that I never noticed until I read your comments. 😀
The video clip, directed by Matthew Rolston in 1999, pays homage to Joan Crawford in the film Humouresque (1946) as well as to The Thomas Crown Affair (1968). Re-telling the famous death of Joan Crawford, Madonna stages her aquatic suicide and her rebirth.
Madonna worked on the Ray of Light album that included the Power of Goodbye in 1997. The album was released in February 22, 1998. I think the most likely influence for this song was her break up with Carlos Leon in 1997. She gave birth to their daughter, Lourdes, in 1996 after she completed the filming of Evita. Really appreciate your reactions to Madonna’s artistry.
Fine art references, classic Hollywood, Halston, over the top beauty that was reportedly pared down from initially being too beautiful and our dark corners that haunt us during difficult separations create magic together.
Wow! Very clever of you to point out that! Gracias por compartir!
I do not believe we’ll have many ballads on the celebration tour. I mean, we can’t be sure until the sunless comes out. The inevitable next move after this tour for Madonna will do the ballads tour because everyone seems to forget that Madonna has just as many successful ballads. More successful than many of her dance-oriented songs, at least on the hot 100. A Slow or mid-tempo show, much like Adele or one of these types of performers.
@Marvin MQZ Oh, thank you so much for enlightening me. I certainly appreciate that; I can’t believe how ignorant I am sometimes; much apreesh again. When she is in her 70s, and her 80s; after this tour, she may have a tour of just ballads and mid-tempo songs.
@@MrJ0NE5 I wonder if she still takes care of her voice like she used to. We saw in I'm going to tell you a secret documentary that she was visiting vocal teacher.
@@escapingboredom6958 Great question; I wonder, too, based on some of her live performances the past couple years that usually include dancing about having fun.
Hi Johnny, I love your reactions. I love how you articulate things. I enjoy your ability to compare it to other things you’ve seen or have come up somewhere on your pallet at one time. I always love the Madonna reactions that you do. ❤️❤️
G'day it's Steven from Down Under again I've always liked this song and Madonna is of course quite gorgeous in this music video. Sadly for me this song also reminds me of when my marriage ended. All hail the Queen of Pop!
I couldn’t be happier you reacted to this gorgeous video, with such beautifully haunting vocals. I sure hope you react to a great song/video, “I’ll Remember”, it was for the movie soundtrack, “With Honors” from 1994.
I think the ambiguous suicide scene was based off of an old Joan Crawford movie, called Humoresque. I can't remember if there was a scene about chess in that film, but yes, I assume it's about a combative relationship which she feels she needs to break away from.
Madonna is styled here like a Bollywood star. And as already mentioned by others, the story was inspired by "Humoresque." Here's a side-by-side of the two: th-cam.com/video/uKpQ2Ovh-t8/w-d-xo.html
Love your reaction! It's an incredible song and glad you enjoyed it. To answer your question I think 'The Power Of Good-bye' was a decent hit in UK (#6) and US (#11). Following two massive singles; 'Frozen' and 'Ray Of Light'. Still one of her highest streamed singles as well.
For me, I think them playing chess is an expression of equality and then sometimes deciding who has the power or control in the relationship. Matching wit for wit and for her to show that she can hold her own and even surpass him. She's letting him know that she's not as weak as he might thing she might be...that she can and carry her own weight and will be just fine on her own. Yes, those strings in the interlude is hard to deny. I still find myself fighting back tears when I hear them still to this day.
When I first saw this video I was overwhelmed by how strikingly beautiful Madonna was. Man, she was so hot but in a demure way. Her dress, naturally dark hair, and those eyes. Those eyes set 100 million televisions on fire! You give me fever! Lol.
Such a beautiful song ❤ I’ve always loved it ❤ It’s at that stage where you’ve given everything, you’ve tried everything and you just have to let go of a relationship because the other person is just not emotionally available. Heartbreaking, but resigned. Strength from being able to walk away when everything is not enough. ❤ love your reactions!
When my ex fiancé and I broke up, this song was playing in the background of our last fight. (Not physical) it took me years to listen to it again. It’s still hard to listen to, because the words were so prophetic. One of my absolute favorites by her though. So beautiful. So heartbreaking. My other favorite is Look of Love. It’s off the Who’s That Girl soundtrack. Beautiful song, too.
Madonna stated it's about a strong love affair that was at an end and somebody had to bite the bullet as it was turning toxic - Madonna ended the relationship also symbolised by her destroying the chess game - The inspiration came from the movie The Thomas Crown Affair 1968 - Our Australian music critic and guru Molly Meldrum that introduced us to Madonna in 1984 with an interview that's so indearing - a must watch as madonna was so young and innocent - she was very playful and our Molly was stutteringly nervous as usual - talking about the simplest things and also comparing her to Michael Jackson when she only had one hit Holiday in Australia - He is a very close friend and said the song was also linked to Sean. This is the interview with a gorgeous young glowing and natural Madonna just off the streets and a virgin in the industry - I get a tear in my eye watching this interview as I saw it live and hooked on Madonna from that day onwards and she is toooooo adorable - th-cam.com/video/tMyiCHVqnys/w-d-xo.html
Johnny, go back and listen to the version that she did specifically for the Vanity Fair Enlightenment video you reacted to. We need the full version of it!
i love your reaction. you seem cerebral. Anyways, late 90s Madonna was her peak beauty in my opinion. She was natural and she seemed sophisticated. idk something about her was magical during that period
No, I remember the name but I haven't heard anything. The sound I put in just before the Behind The Scenes bit is a William Orbit instrumental which sounded amazing
@@bridgethegapreactionsyou should listen to the demo at some point. If you like it, listen to Lamb. The first album was 1996 and I remember Madonna saying Morcheeba or was it Mandalay being her favorite band at one point. Trip hop stuff.
The Chess game always symbolized to me that the relationship was more of a Chess game where he always played calculated to get the upper hand, instead of love being the end game. You can’t treat a relationship like a game of chess. 🤷🏼♀️
As much as I’m a kid of the 80s, this album is by far when Madonna looked and sounded the best. First, for as stunning as she was in the 1980s, she was absolutely gorgeous in her late 30s to early 40s. Second, there isn’t a bad song on this album, which is the only Madonna album for which this is true, IMHO.
Thank you for your awesome reaction videos and your love of madonna. Please can you do a reaction to the stunning underrated single GHOST TOWN by Madonna? Thank you Keep up the great work We love it Yay
ABFT! The guy is a pre ER Goran Visnjic and most of this video was shot on a sound stage, including all the "beach" shots of Madonna which are all fake, as she's walking on a treadmill. The aerial shots were seamlessly intercut with the studio footage though you wouldn't know it (which you know as I didn't watch to the end when I wrote this).
LOL Johnny, slagging off Guy. Not really a fan of his. Anyway...the end of this video is a reference to a film. She always bring others into her art. Wish I knew the name.
This is just a straight up showcase for Madonnas beauty, isn’t it?
I don’t think any pop star was ever this beautiful.
Nope. Never. She’s the ultimate beautiful pop star.

The Thomas Crown Affair specifically is where the chess game is from.
I always thought she looked so much more stunning with dark hair because of her eyes.
