    So, first leaf blowers came out in 1929 then! Have had several props made by Newton over the years and superb all-round!

    Most interesting and engaging. Thanks for showing so much of what it takes to make one of these veterans fly. In my younger days, I built/rebuilt several car engines. I always had the dream of an engine dynamometer to test them. Being so much more sophisticated than an automobile, an aircraft only needs a reasonably accurate spring scale. Marvelous. You are so right that the Sovereign would clearly be the right choice. The smoothness was apparent from the first few pops. A thing of beauty to be sure.

      @@davestarr7112 There’s nothing sophisticated about a two cylinder Aeronca Jap! A propeller is ideal for ground running as it’s effectively a self contained dynamometer, offering increasing resistance with rising rpm. The Sovereign is a fine prop and I’ll definitely use it on the C2. More engine runs soon 👍🏻

    Looking forward to your video on the E-113 crankshaft failures. I have a couple of Aeronca K project planes and engines. I have several crankshafts, some look new. Want to do the right things to make them stay together.

      I’m intending to make that film in the next couple of months 👍

      Always liked the Ks. Almost bought one many years ago, but it needed more work than my abilities and finances at the time could handle, unfortunately !
      It didn't have an engine at all, and before I passed on the sale, I tossed about the options of finding an E113 or repowering with an A65. The latter seemed like a worthwhile upgrade, but I really like keeping these early birds as original as possible. It did eventually go to a very good owner who I believe went with an A40, I. Lost track of it some years ago.

    Really quite interesting, thinking of changing the propeller on my Terrier when back in the air it's a bit fine really. Anyway love the content keep it up. Cheers Geof

    I use a fishing scale to measure pull for compair props.

    Beautiful prop. Seems like the lower rpm would be kinder to the engine over time. The smoothness surely will be. The oil spray would irritate me greatly. Could you create a dome like cover to go over the oil breather and maybe have a drain tube attached to it to hang down below cowling?

    • @FlyingForFunTrecanair

      I have seen some novel modifications to the breather but never any information as to how well they worked. The pipe would be very oily inside. As a matter of fact we have just filmed Part 2 and I cleaned the back of the fuel tank beforehand. There was almost no oil on there afterwards which can be explained in two ways? Firstly the oily mist is less than I thought; secondly she's run out of oil! The Sovereign propeller was the smoothest running of the three tested.

      @@FlyingForFunTrecanair just had a thought….maybe place some type of sponge on top of breather to catch a little more oil

    • @spurgear4
      @spurgear4 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@dcmflydude6320 I have seen many breather tubes run into a seperation can that has an internal standpipe and a kind of swirl vane inside to spin the air and extract the oil. the oil can then be removed through a drain cock after. flight , or flights.Kind of like the catch tank on the c 130 for the fcu dump on shutdown.
      I just use a rag on my Vegabond...its the charm of flying antiques.

      Nick are the rings are seated good and you have good compression? How many hours on one of those engines until the rings seat?

    There's a lot of leaf blowing at Trago right now can we borrow? Sucking up next doors cat would be a tad embarrassing eh? I tied my VP1 to a fence post whilst running in, at Truleigh Manor Farm Falking. Whilst fiddling with the car I wondered what I would say, if she got away on her own. Luckily both jobs went well. Lovely video with the sped up bits the innovation and information....Can I play?

      I shall be at Trago tomorrow morning, need some shelf brackets for the hangar. I’ll bring the C2 with me!

    ? why was the lower torque prop the better choice?

    • @FlyingForFunTrecanair
      @FlyingForFunTrecanair  ปีที่แล้ว +3

      The Lang gave a tiny bit more thrust but I am concerned that it's too fine and the motor will overspeed in the climb. Throttling back to control rpm effectively reduces manifold pressure and thus power; not particularly helpful on an already low powered machine. Lift off rpm is usually around 100 rpm more than static, due to the propeller unloading at speed (because the relative airflow has less angle of attack). The Sovereign is very smooth and a 100 rpm increase in rpm will be beneficial without risking overspeed etc. That's the theory!

    Really think you should be wearing a flying helmet and goggles for this sort of thing. Not for safety of course, just ‘cos it would look right.❤

      Haha, yes, we have just filmed Part 2 and considered such things but the light was going and there was no time to lose. It was darn cold in the slipstream!
