  • A young man revisits a hiking trip.
    FAREWELL FIRE is used with permission from Connor Hair and Alex Meader. Learn more at perceptionsqua....
    James is a young man hiking deep in the woods of an old forest. As he moves among the trails and trees, he relives the memories of the last camping trip he took with his father. On the trip, James and his father settle into their campsite, building a fire, and they talk a little about James's future. But then the conversation turns to the real news of the trip: James's father is dying of brain cancer and has only a few months "before it gets bad."
    Now, with his father gone, James looks upon his memories of him and mulls over the final words he shared with him. Those memories now comfort him through the grief, and along with the solace of nature, help him find his way again.
    Directed by Connor Hair and Alex Meader, who wrote the script, this powerful short drama captures the last trip shared by a father and son, right before they face a final precipice that will part them. When James's father tells his son of his condition, one that will essentially change him and their relationship before he passes, it alters the meaning of the trip. Now, it is not just a parent and child bonding, but the last time they will meaningfully share this majestic natural experience.
    The natural setting of the old forest, with its enduring trees and hushed peace, functions as its own character in the film, beautifully captured with expansive, luminous cinematography. But when James and his father make camp for the night and build the fire, they enter into a different psychological space, marked by an almost isolating darkness, dimly lit by only a fire. This endows their dialogue with a particular intensity, marking it as a core memory for them both, which made all the more poignant because it will be one of the last they will share. Actors Jeff Tendall and Ben Morang, as father and son respectively, evoke the deep bond they share, cracking open the strength and steadfastness to reveal the tenderness, devotion and love that a father feels for his children, who look up to him in return.
    Restrained, moving and beautifully crafted, FAREWELL FIRE makes the case for the power of shared experiences, as well as a portrayal of the unique emotional intimacy that can be shared between fathers and their children. It doesn't shy away from the pain of parting, but in its final moments, it finds hope in the acceptance and peace that nature offers. Beyond unconditional love, this may be this father's lasting legacy to his son, one that offers solace and guidance even when he's gone.

    It’s a real honor to be able to share this story on Father’s Day here on Omeleto. Thank you all so much for taking the time to watch! I really can’t tell you how much it means to me and the rest of the amazing cast and crew who made this movie possible. This is a very personal film for me and having the chance to share it with an audience and hear your reactions and your own stories of saying goodbye is such a powerful experience. I lost my dad in 2020 to an extremely rare neurodegenerative disease called CJD. This story is based on that experience and the perspective it gave me on life. It’s also a tribute to the man who raised me and my two siblings. You’ll always be in our hearts Dad.
    If anyone has any questions about the film, feel free to ask and I’ll do my best to answer them!

      @@Meaderscope Of course Alex :) Thank you so much for making and sharing such a wonderful film with deep emotions and beautiful messages. I want you to know when you look out at a vast colorful sky and you feel a wave of gratitude, peace or love, know that feeling is your father, and your trueself. And know that any disturbing wave is just a wave on the surface of an ocean of love. Or just as when the sun goes down, know that it is not gone but still blazing with passion where you can't see. What I'm saying in my metaphors is; You can only lose something that you have, but you cannot lose something that you are. So, when you feel the loss and emptyness of your father in your life, think of it as spaciousness for more love to come in, and give, just as you've done with this flim. ❤❤❤Thank you for giving your message so I can better understand the importance of the ones around me. I wish you gratitude, peace and love back to you my friend. :)

    In today's world, if a film isn't wall to wall CGI with action at least every 30 seconds, it is doomed. Thank goodness for films like this that bring the human factor back into our overstimulated brains. Hiking in nature does the same thing, giving you a deep connection with something simple and meaningful. My father introduced me Ansel Adams and John Muir. We went to Yosemite when I was in high school and I went back years later with my wife. We had recently found that we were pregnant with our first. Now my home is covered with Adams posters, Muir quotes, and pictures of my own adventures. This 14 minute film hits hard and is above and beyond the crap Hollywood puts out in todays climate. Having never met your father, I'm confident in saying that he couldn't be more proud of you and he is sending you perfect sunrises every chance he gets. Thank you for sharing your story.

    • @Meaderscope
      @Meaderscope 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +5

      Thank you so much! I can't put into words how much that means to me. I'm so glad you enjoyed the film! You really got at the core of what we were trying to do with this film. So many of my fondest memories with my Dad are of family camping trips to the Olympic National Forest. That was my Dad's happy place. After I lost my Dad, spending time out in nature camping and hiking were really thereputic for me. They helped me find a sense of perspective about life and saying goodbye to him. That was the feeling we wanted to convey with this film. The feeling of staring up at a 500 year old tree and realizing how short and fragile our lives are compared to the immensity of nature. I've found that perspective helps me be more present and cherish the time I have with the people I love. I'm glad that came across in the film. Thanks for taking the time to watch!

      @Meaderscope 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      We wish! We would have LOVED to have shot this on film! Unfortunately we didn't have the budget for that so we shot on digital (RED Komodo) and then added a film emulation LUT and grain in color to acheive this look! That makes me really happy to hear that it looks like it was shot on film! Thanks for making my day :)

      This is actually completely the opposite of the message of the film. This film makes the case for the value and meaning of life and the passing of the torch between generations. It's a celebration of parenthood and the continuation of the human story. You're entitled to your own personal beliefs and I respect that, but I do want to be clear that this worldview is completely antithetical to the message of this film.

    Dad went last July. His end was a release for him. Diabetes and it's complications made for a crap quality of life. I told him how much he'd influenced me after the horrors my father had done to me and how much I loved him for taking a chance on a patently damaged kid. I love and miss him. I put a memorial to him in the temple at burning man and watched as he went to whatever comes after when we burned it. I miss you, Dad. May the universe keep and honor your wonderful soul.

      Thank you so much! That really means so much to me and the whole team who brought this film to life!
      I'm sorry to hear about your loss. That is what it feels like, a hole that you can never fill, and probably wouldn't want to even if you could. That's how it felt for me at least. Reflecting on that feeling while I was writing this film really brought it into perspective for me. All of us have to say goodbye to the ones we love someday, and we all have these holes in us that can't be filled. What really defines us is how we learn from these losses and how we grow around them.
      Thank you for taking the time to watch! I appreciate it so much!

      Thank you so much! I can't tell you the number of times I cried while we were making the film. It was a very personal and cathartic experience to tell this story. It really helped me find some perspective and meaning in saying goodbye to my Dad. We hope that in sharing it with the world we can help bring some comfort to others who have lost parents and loved ones and let them know that they're not alone ❤
      Thank you for watching!
