      “Here’s how a caveman made the slingshot. But instead of using stone tools, we’ve got these high-tech gadgets now. We call them ‘chisels’. In the future, humans might invent power tools. Maybe even a bandsaw. That would make this process so much faster. But for now, all we have is the chisel.”

      yeah if i were going to go hand tools it would be a coping saw and a draw knife for most of it.
      its not surprising he isn't aware of the proper tools for the job, based on how inexperienced he obviously is with woodworking.
      this seems to be a trend in these "maker" videos, people laboring endlessly with the wrong tools.

    Loved everything about this video! Showing my appreciation as a viewer by sharing this - use the face of your new chisel's bevel to "ride along the surface" of the wood. Bevel up will dig! Best wishes from NC! ☺️👍🏼

  • @rogercranwill5029
    @rogercranwill5029 2 ปีที่แล้ว +27

    Nice work, but just one thing. You were using the chisel with the angled side up. This causes deeper cuts into the wood, and can’t be corrected as you cut into the wood. If the chisel is used with the angled side down, the amount of wood being taken off can be adjusted.

    What a gorgeous and powerful sling shot.
    As a kid in California we could buy a commercially made wrist rocket (aluminum tube with forearm support from Wham-O). They were outlawed for a while due to the extreme damage they caused. Now legal, I own a sweet adjustable type- can be used for hunting, though I don't shoot animals.
    If you need more power, stretching latex hose across bicycle handles and using 1" bearings can go the distance with devistating power.

  • @percival23

    Excellent build. But the material around the fork ends is really thin and has to handle the greatest amount of stress. i wonder if it would hold up over time.

    • @tinderella2386
      @tinderella2386 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah it’s a dumb design
      He started from a huge wood stock and then totally thinned out the two main places that take all the stress, and then they even got holes drilled in them laterally to support the dowels for the rollers even more so thinning out the material in that section. He could have made the arms wider and thicker and protrude out more to the sides and even kept the same aperture size in the middle of the arms

    Go near a silent lake at 5 am in the morning and shoot the slingshot straight up in the air, slightly tipped toward the lake. Fire it upward and start the stopwatch, then listen for the projectile piercing the water as it lands. For velocity multiply this time by 16 gives FEET PER SECOND. EXAMPLE 10 seconds for the trip up and back down gives 10 times 16 gives 160 feet per second.
    For the total height the pellet travels, Square that round trip time and multiply by 4 gives the highest point of travel in feet. EXAMPLE 10 seconds squared is 100 times 4 gives 400 feet high maximum.

    You should use a sling. With a little practice you become very accurate and depending on what shape rock you use and save, you can do amazing things with your weapon. And don't gave to rely on pre-made metal balls or the king of aiming that requires two hands and sharp vision. With a small amount of practice you simply look at the target, swing, and there you go! You can easily make a sling with a small rectangular piece of leather and two leather or string straps about 18 inches up to 3 feet long.

      Using a rubber mallet to strike a chisel should slow you down and you'll need to hit the chisel 5 times for every 1 time if he'd used a wood or steel mallet.
      Rubber is only used (and not at all for hitting cutting tools) in other ways, like to drive finished peices of furniture together without marring the wood.
      This guy is brand new to tools and techniques.

      @@jeffmoore9487 Yep, I spotted the rubber mallet too and chuckled a bit. I didn't want to be too cruel. I like how he figured out sawing to the line though, he gets a point for that, I hope he learns to read the grain next.

      @@indigogolf3051 In a way talent in woodworking is just picking new or old short cuts in each case. When your beginning, all you got is how you imagine it can be done. I wasn't any different.

    I have to say thank you for showing me that a chisel can remove a large amount of wood (UPDATE) the chisel didn't work so plan B. I admire your intelligence for figuring out that a rasp does the job faster (UPDATE 2) well behind the scenes it took you about 6 months and once again I thank you for not making me watch the full six months rasping. Look it's not a crime to use a band saw, it's not a crime to use an electric sander. Please don't be frightened like me when you said it was the first time you used a chisel.
    That egg was hit so hard it hard boiled on impact.

    I’d think antler or plastic would be better than wood for rollers.
