The angry calls of vervet monkeys

What do vervet monkeys sound like? On my sound recording expedition to Zambia, a family of these noisy monkeys were my neighbours. They occasionally erupted into ridiculously-sounding alarm calls when they sensed danger nearby. After I heard them call a few times I prepared a shotgun microphone rig under they tree they roosted, ready to press record. I didn't have to wait for too long until I heard them again, and quickly started recording.
The soundscape was quite busy in the savanna so the recording also includes insects and some birds, but it's much cleaner than what I managed to record with my Sony PCM D100. That's not to say either is better - I like both focused close-up recordings and soundscapes that include the space and other elements too.

Judging by the calls, I’d say that they were alarm calling at a warm-blooded predator like an eagle or leopard.

Vervet monkeys are sharp-witted primates. Love their hierarchy dramas and daily lives.

They are indeed very interesting primates to watch and understand. In this case I think it was a raptor they were alarmed about, probably a Crowned eagle.
