    After 30 years of continual roadworks the M25 can now handle the traffic of a typical Sunday in 1987!

    Always surprises me how late into the 80s it was until the M25 was completed!

    That's why Tring by-pass has a hard shoulder - was once M41.

    One small niggle: the M11 used to carry on along the North Circular before terminating at Redbridge Roundabout. After the NC was extended to the A13 in 1987, the M11 was shortened to its current terminus.

      Patrick Harper maybe renumber the junctions on the M11 from Junction 4-14 to Junctions 1-11 as there is 11 junctions on the M11. And A12 numbered Junctions 11-33 to renumber Junctions 1-21.

    Didn't the first part of the M25 near South Mimms open as the M16 when that was the original designation for Ringway 3 ? Perhaps it was re-designated before it opened ?

    • @paianis
      @paianis 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It was designated as A1178 when opened, became M25 when it was extended further east.

      Construction of the first section of the M16 began in 1973 between South Mimms and Potters Bar in Hertfordshire and opened in September 1975 with the temporary general purpose road designation A1178. During construction of the first section of the motorway, the majority of the Ringways plan was cancelled and, in 1975 the plans for Ringway 3 were modified to combine it with parts of another motorway, Ringway 4, the outermost Ringway... The M16 designation was dropped and the combined motorway was given the designation M25 which had originally been intended for the southern and western part of Ringway 4.

    If I remember right there was the M15 at the "start" of the M11 however it was incomplete and eventually became part of the A406

    • @JenOnTheMove
      @JenOnTheMove  7 ปีที่แล้ว +13

      Very few people realise that the M60 is the only true orbital motorway in the UK. Yes, Birmingham has a "box" but that's made up of 3 different motorways.

      I don't understand much about British motorway system as I don't live there, but I assume many of the construction plan halted, shelved, or just lost because of some circumstances in the past resulted in motorways broken into pieces. Well, sometimes I open Pathetic Motorway and yup some of them are pretty pathetic

      One day I'll do a video on all of the unbuilt ringways of London. It would have been way over the top if they'd have all been built!

    • @benibbotson2014
      @benibbotson2014 7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      SesamaLho the motorway box was very unpopular with the public, expensive and would result in many homes being destroyed,therefore they never did build it and they downgraded most of the motorway that had already been built for Ringway 1 and 2.

    • @paianis

      It was completed, the Dartford Crossing is numbered A282 due to technicalities.

    The M11 would of extended south to join with the A12 near Leyton and could of also extended instead of A14 & Cambridge but to Newmarket and to Thetford and Norwich. Was there used to be a M13. And M41 could of been built when London Heathrow Airport was also built connecting with the M25 from near to M40 J16 Uxbridge and M25 J12 M3 near Chertsey.

    • @mattclass9176
      @mattclass9176 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The A14 nearly became a motorway just recently, technically acting as an extension of the M11 to the A1(M) The M41 was given the wrong number. Had the West Cross Route been built it would’ve been M14, along with probably the rest of Ringway 1

  • @iman2341
    @iman2341 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Why oh why did they have to be so brash with the Ringway plans! 2 Orbital motorways would have been fine! North and South Circular and the M25! Maybe even some dual carrageway bypass roads further out.

      Good point here, Patrick. The UK was very slow to get on with a motorway network - all within my living memory, I'm sorry to say.
      But, but, but you have some great historic routes in the US, such as Route 66, which are far more interesting.
      When I travel from Kent to Cornwall, I use some motorway, then A303 & A30. These 'A' roads (main routes) are far more interesting and have lots and lots of services for food, etc. But they're slower, yeah.
