I never thought in my life I would feel genuine empathy for both Baraka AND Reptile! They took 2 C list characters that I always thought were okay or kinda cool, into 2 of the most badass AND empathetic characters in all of Mortal Kombat! I love that the writers put as much focus on the less famous characters as the much as they do the main cast. Like an Avengers movie. Also the Aliens quote along with Johnny being shocked that no one else in the room has seen that masterpiece of a movie is one of my favorite jokes ever in MK. I would’ve added him saying “Okay timeout, can we spare 2 and a half hours and all watch Aliens?”🤣🤣🤣
Couldn't agree more. I didn't expect that I'm gonna love Baraka so much!? It's so easy to sympathize with him now. I like that he's wise and kind despite his monster-facade. It's tragic that he's good at heart yet a monster at the same time, but is he a monster really? I mean, this game, surprisingly, gave us a lot of this type of messages, like who is the real monster Barracka or Shang Tsung? It's Barracka who was banished and Shang Tsung was welcomed in Capital where it should be the opposite. It's so realistic tho, in real life people usually judge by appearance and a way of speaking as well. The same goal for Reptile, as the reactors have said, ppl usually are afraid of the unknown and that's why they've banished Reptile. They didn't judge his actions but his appearance which was a huge mistake cause as we can see Reptile is good at heart, kind, and a very protective 'freak'. Speaking abt Reptile. I love his character development so much! I mean, I've always loved Reptile cause he was a cool green ninja with cool skills... He and Sub-Zero were always my favorite characters but now, when they gave him such an interesting backstory and personality, ( and daamn he's handsome 😏😅) I feel like I'm really invested in his story to the point that it will be really heartbreaking if he dies. But for now, I'm happy that he joined our heroes, and that he got his own chapter, it's really cool. I just love storytelling in this game, it's amazing! 💯🔥👌
As far as I can tell, only people with a genetic predisposition can get Tarkat. Everyone infected was probably Tarkatan in the previous timeline, not that they’d be aware of it. Much like Mileena and Baraka. This is why it only spreads in Outworld.
That makes sense to me. It might also help explain why Baraka's marrow is one of the major ingredients for Shang Tsung's "serum". His status as Tarkatan leader in the previous timelines seems to have translated (by Baraka's own account) into either a high level of resistance, or perhaps even partial immunity to the disease in his genetic code (or at least immunity to the fatal aspects of it). He implies that he's had it for a long time and he's obviously in better physical and mental condition than anyone else in the Tarkatan "Leper's Colony" that he leads. If he does have a unique mutation that helps him survive the disease, then that would also explain why Shang Tsung would want to try to replicate that through vivisection and experimentation.
@@Rukdug That’s a great point. I’m glad they gave Baraka a really cool story. Edit: even his abilities to make arm blades seems much more advanced than any other Tarkatan. Which is unique to this game.
I very much appreciate that you guys censored it yourself, it’s more work, I understand, but it’s a much more full experience for both us and you. Thank you! Also, this is probably my favorite MK story yet. Every character feels like they have their own interesting ideals and own goals, they’re not just all people who work for people because of greed, power, or crazy promises.
I love that all 3 "jobbers" of MK 9 (Sheeva, Reptile, Baraka) got redemptive arcs since then. Sheeva as a regal figure in MK11 and Reptile/Baraka here. 30 years later and the creative juices are still flowing freely.
I think what makes the story so compelling is that all of the, normally, "side" characters are now getting the spotlight. Katana being the "little" sister to Mileena and not the main character is still pretty crazy to watch lol
21:40 Wow! I was already impressed by Baraka's character change, but now Reptile's character?! I love this new universe Fire God Liu Kang has created! 🙏🏽💪
When the test your might scene popped up on my play through, I was so amped! What a great call back and one with meaning in the story too. Well done by the story team.
Kenshi's backstory in the original timeline had him get fooled by Shang Tsung into opening a well of souls for him to feed on, which was also the incident that blinded Kenshi and led him to his sword. It was actually adapted in Mortal Kombat Legends: Snow Blind, which is mostly an original story otherwise. I really recommend you check it out at some point.
Steve Blum, Baraka's VA since MK11 (As well as Sub-Zero in MKX to 11), is no stranger to gruff voices. Like Wolverine, Zeb in Star Wars Rebels and Grunt in Mass Effect, even in previous Mortal Kombat games, he's done various roles like in MKX with Reptile and Bo Rai Cho.
The voice actor who is currently voicing Shang tsung is Alan Lee I believe that's his name and when I learned that he is the voice actor Shang tsung I'm like holy crap he sounds so much like cary
They way the remixed ashra melina Baraka and reptile have the most interesting backgrounds and write them better then alot of characters in movie and TV is insane I grew up loving mk and its so cool to see something I love age so well ❤❤❤
Reptile's old backstory in previous games was that he was the last of his kind that was taken in under Shao Kahn's army and serving under Shang Tsung. Meanwhile, Baraka's entire backstory was that Tarkatans were an odd one out race in Outworld with him being the unanimous leader for being the strongest Tarkatan and it's why he ended up under Shao Kahn's employ. They were both pretty much one-note antagonists, so yeah. I agree with both of you that them deciding to expand on their characters in a timeline not under Shao's rule is fantastic.
This is alternate love how they turned tarkat to disease from them just being the offsprings demons and outworlders. Kenshi also lost his eyes from being tricked by shang tsung in a cave this time mileena takes him Out
Baraka is played by Steve Blum Who is currently a teacher of voice acting I think there was a story by Nolan North that Steve Blum used to cough up blood or something I think you can find the story on retro replay highlights which is basically used to be a TH-cam channel with Troy Baker and Nolan North but they split and that TH-cam channel is no longer a thing anymore
25:08 Just in case you two don't know, Ashra was introduced in Mortal Kombat: Deception. She was a cool character. Pretty cool to see her return to the series! 😊
We all know Baraka and Reptile and such are shining stars of this section, but I just wanna give my appreciation towards Quan Chi. He's always been one of my favorite characters, and I feel that somehow he's the most Quan Chi he's ever been. When you can see the whites of his eyes above the irises (what is now probably called the Starfield effect) makes him look really sinister and unhinged inside, even though he is calm on the outside. I can't understand why, but this feels like bringing back an aspect of him that has been missing, even though I couldn't tell you what I am basing this on. It's not like he was depicted on this level before the netherrealm era games. The Mythologies live action cutscenes? The MK4 and 3d era renders? Freakin' Defenders of the Realm?? I haven't seen that one TV series, he might have been in that one...
I just realized they made Baraka an Edenian That's why he's so handsome in this game despite his disease! Edenians are known for aging slowly and are just generally beautiful to the eye (If y'all didn't know other Edenians are Edenians like Kitana, Mileena, Sindel, Jerrod, Jade, Rain, Tanya, and apparently Baraka too! [Pls let me know if I missed anyone])
Awesome, I love these reactions to Mortal Kombat 🔥, after the story mode you guys can make a video reacting to all of Johnny Cage's intros dialogues , they're hilarious 😂💚
27:50 I don't remember much about Reptile's original backstory. However, I remember he was the last of his race and he was considered an ooutsider since he was the last of his kind. But I like his new backstory better
As an original fan starting in 1992, 1 Great film, 1 ok film, 1 smoking crack sequala, cartoons, and tv show.. To see 9,10, 11 and 1 give us something that says It can be done right. Baraka and Reptile now has more personality. Ideally, it's not so black and white, there is a lot of grays of evil and good.
also, when you talked about the mad scientist side of Shang Tsung, i don't think we all thought deeply about the creation of Mileena in the previous timelines. he had to imagine all of Mileena's body as Kitana's, which is super gross. he had many female bodies on the tubes, failed experiments that he just kept there, naked and in pain. how did he even got de idea of mixing tarkatan and edenian dna, when he could have just stuck with a perfect Kitana's clone? it spoke for his twisted mind. and if there was depth level to the story, in general, and mileena, in specific, back in mk9, it could pose as an interesting body horror plotline.

I'm religious, so it stands out to me when characters written by people in popular fiction say stuff like that, especially since I assumed he was a monk-like figure and therefore chill about varying beliefs. Trying to get better at dealing with my social anxieties. Maybe he's just competitive and thinks the other realms are more real than Earth's beliefs considering he probably doesn't have a very high opinion of them--considering johnny. It could be that he heard Johnny using phrases like "Go to Hell" and "What the Hell" and got curious.
