- In this episode we will take a look at this vintage fly or screw press. Let's find out if it's as good as its heavy :) Subscribe if you want more videos like this!
A fly press is a type of screw press in which the screw shaft is driven by a flywheel or a pair of fly weights at the ends of a bar. The wheel can either be cranked by hand or driven by a motor using a friction coupling. The wheel is weighted so its momentum will maintain the motion of the shaft. A fly press which is operated by hand is the simplest of all presses, it consists of mass, handle, body, arm, screw, ram, stop collar, treads, and guides.
Nice job so far
I'm glad you like it!
I have a much smaller levered version of these types of presses. That had to be one big something that happened to cause such a severe break!!! Do you know what broke it? I know very LITTLE about fixing such a cast style tool. Would it be worth it to drill a hole threw the top all the way down into the base and install a big pin of some sort? Or will welding it be sufficient? It will be good to see it back together and working again!
Hello Guy Montana!I'm not sure what happend to it. I thought it fell and broke but there is no dents anywhere.Maybe to big of a load when working? But the screw is super straight and the ram holder would probably brake befor the ''head''. Maybe it was a crack or a inperfection in the casting from new and with yares it let go...I orderd aluminum bronze filler for tig brazing. I hope i can braze it so i don't need to put that ''holder'' back on. The side plates and screws will stay on for sure.
So how’s the press coming along? I’m curious to see how welding it back together went
It's going great! Just got home with the paint :) I thought i will be able to make the video this week but i had to work and did not have time for restoring... Will try to put it out till monday-is :D
