The one thing that I'd like most is boost mode, even if Nintendo sort of does it quietly. I understand they're not as techy as Sony or Microsoft and will go into major details, but just as basic as a sentence saying Switch 1 titles can run better on Switch 2, they're just not boasting about it, I would genuinely have a blast going back and replaying a ton of my Switch 1 Library out of curiosity.
And a lot of first party Switch games either ran well at 60fps and/or native 1080p. So I'd love to see Smash Ultimate and Metroid Dread in 4K and BotW and Xenoblade Chronicles 3 at 60fps.
For me Nintendo Switch 2 is the way that Nvidia will incentive the use or RTX KIT between developers, making AI-First rendering a basic in the pipeline. In fact, I'm sure that RTX Kit is also a kind of Switch 2 developer kit replica. I'm really sure that switch 2 games will be made with neural rendering tech. And it's logical in Nintendo way of thinking of being efficient and low energy cost.
Nvidia hinting at FG coming to RTX 3000 series in their interview with you might indicate that they have ported FG to run on Ampere for the Switch 2. Might be a huge PR fiasco if the Switch 2 has DLSS FG and more powerful GPUs on the same architecture didn't have it.
That's a good point indeed. However I can really see NVidia creating a custom gpu for the switch 2 in order to be both affordable and able to use the last dlss versions. It's their first big scale console gpu in a long time so they might want to invest as much as possible to possibly attract Microsoft and Sony in the futur.
It is not coming tho they said If they work hard on it they might be able to make it work. Doesn't mean they will allocate their resources to bring a tech to the older generations.
What I could see happening is Nintendo giving free performance updates to smaller first party titles, like Tropical Freeze. But then they charge $5-10 for upgrades to games like Super Mario Odyssey and Breath of the Wild.
"can" and "will" are different things in thise case. Nintendo filed patents for diet-DLSS models to be used in hardware, which is most likely the Switch 2. Although DLSS 4 will be "compatible" with the Switch 2, I'm guessing it will be too costly for developers to utilize in their toolkit. Upscaling has a cost, and the increased sophistication of DLSS 4 might cost too much for such a lightweight chip.
@huandrew3874 DLSS upscaling has reduced cost relative to native rendering the output resolution., Nevertheless, 1080p native will have a higher frame rate than 1080p -> 4K via DLSS. DLSS costs precious milliseconds to compute, and compute time increases for weaker/slower cards, such as the Switch 2. Nvidia designed RTX 5000 to handle the new transformer model better than their older cards, which subtly implies that *at least some* of their older cards might find DLSS 4 rather heavy. No doubt the Switch 2 would be among those cards, for all we know it might take 10ms+ to compute DLSS 4 (spitballing here) which most devs would probably agree is too costly. Realistically, running a transformer model for every single frame of a video game in real time is a big ask for a mobile chip based on 2020 hardware (Ampere architecture).
Upgrade patches: Nintendo never done it, because they never released a successor capable of it. Now they are working with Nvidia again on a direct successor on very similar architecture. Applying that same standard to MS and Sony, you woudnt expect upgrade patches this gen either, because this gen is the first time they been doing it.
Maybe they can create a light weight model trained on the expected game itself running at higher performance on dev machines and ship that light model with the game??
Honestly regardless of resolution I just want a smooth experience. I honestly even thought Prime Remastered looked super smooth. Little soft, but looked great.
A lot of Nintendo's Switch games used dynamic resolution, and quite a few had performance issues in places, so I'm looking forward to some patchless 'upgrades' whether they do patch or not. I mean I hope they do, but this is Nintendo.
If the more advanced DLSS models get more and more computationally demanding, then do they end up costing more performance than just running a game at native resolution? I'm often disappointed with the miniscule performance gains that upscaling solutions provide, compared to how much worse they make games look. It's never something like doubling the framerate. Instead it makes the image blurrier and only gives a few frames more.
Nintendo fans will happily double dip at full price on upgraded first party Switch titles on the Switch 2.. that's how they are. Tears of the Kingdom at 60fps and upscaled to 4k docked as a native release? Nintendo will take that to the bank, they won't be patched for free... That's for other developers.
You might be right, but if that's the case then the upgraded rerelease 4k versions won't come out straight away at launch. It will be years down the road.
Maybe there is profit in it, but the landscape has changed on the hardware horizon so the value proposition for most fans isn't quite the same now. But the narrative could be spun in many cynical ways, and will be.
A bit wrong if its just fps and resolution going up it should be faster to patch/release the "upgraded" version. Should be ready on release, if its more than that than we will wait for sure...
Based on the original MSI Claw being able to use XESS hardware accelerated machine learning upscaling on it's pretty limited hardware and being able to improve performance, why would the Switch 2 take a significant performance hit if using something like DLSS if the hardware is there to support it?
Switch 2 is a day one of purchase for me, but I just care about the games. I think that many people will be let down because of videos like this, I don't believe the SW2 will have any type of DLSS, hopefully I'm wrong but I just don't see it.
@ThinkTinkh I hope your right because there are gonna be s lot of people that will be let down if it doesn't, I just want a 1080p 60fps experience in handheld, that's my only expectation.
We factually already know from the motherboard leak that the Switch 2 will use some form of DLSS to upscale to 4K whether Nintendo uses Nvidia's DLSS or their own upscaling tech. Nintendo is not gonna release a brand new system in 2025 with the max resolution cap being 1080p when 4K TV's have been adopted by the general public.
ML training take a long time to develop; and there aren’t a lot of low-resolution models publicly being developed… I think if DLSS is implemented in Nintendo’s system, it’s going to take a while to get anywhere near the performance advantages of even the lower versions of DLSS… This might even be part of the reason the switch was so delayed.
Mario Kart 9 didn’t have DLSS and looks like a juiced up Switch game. The Ninty DLSS patent was for non-ML version like FSR. Also they talked about the ability to switch between different precision levels of DLSS. My guess is that is for docked and undocked. Perhaps DLSS is too heavy for handheld mode at any base res, so they have a non-ML fallback mode.
You can't say for sure that Mario Kart 9 wasn't using DLSS from a simple 5 to 10 second trailer. We need direct feed footage of the game to determine that.
Exactly. People keep talking about what Nintendo did in the past as if it's the same Nintendo when it's clearly not. People thought Switch 2 wouldn't have 4K, yet it does with DLSS. Next people are gonna be like "Nintendo isn't gonna patch Switch 1 games to have higher resolutions and frame rates" when all the rumors about the Switch 2 before it's official reveal has turned out to be true. Remember the demo behind closed doors Nintendo showed of Zelda BOTW running at 4K 60FPS? Yeah their probably gonna release a patch for BOTW to run at 4K 60FPS on Switch 2 or rerelease the game separately you can get on Switch 2 with those higher frame rates and resolution.
I would definitely buy some upgrade patches for my Switch games if they made them and they weren't too expensive, but even if they don't make them, I'll just be happy if running my Switch games on the Switch 2 prevents drops in framerate or resolution.
If it was like 5 dollars for significant upgrades (like not just utilizing higher clock speeds, but actually maxing out the settings and adding higher quality textures) then I can kinda get down behind that. But if it costs money to just run 1440p/4k 60fps for a switch game without reworking it that would be really bad for consumers & sales.
The RTX 2050 is actually an 8 nm Ampere GA107 chip (similar to the the RTX 3050) on a 64 bit buss, on 116 GB/s speed, despite what it's name suggests. You can think of it as a 3050 Lite.
