I woke this morning to light snow on everything and the test peas planting in the new greenhouse seem to be dormant still. But the thyme in there are growing even with cold nights. Parsnips - clean, cut in shapes, butter and honey in a pan - so yummy!

Hi Jessie, home guard is my favourite first early and fo me, has the finest flavour when simply boiled 20 minutes in salted water!
These date from , as you said 1942 as they were developed for the dig for Britain campaign , when the government urged everyone to turn their gardens over to growing veg in order to aid the war effort.
Loving your chanel. Keep it up xx.

Got our elephant garlic in. Have Red La Soda, Ruby Sensation, and Yukon Gold potatoes chitting and ready to plant mid month, here in Northern California. Have the raised beds weeded and ready to put in leeks and onions. Will be starting Jalapeño, Habanero, Serrano and Wonder Bell peppers, and Early Girl, Siletz, Champion, Sweet 1000, and Sun Gold Tomatoes next week in the window. Our Windsor Beans are about 8” tall now. March is just around the corner. I watch your channel as Therepy. More Lil the cat content please. Cheers.

Anyone in the SWHerts area - Aylett nursery sell potatoes by small, large bags where you can pick your own. You can put multiple varieties in a bag, just put some tissue paper between each layer so you can separate them out when home. I only see the point of growing potatoes by picking them by flavour, as standard supermarket varieties are so cheap.

That Red York potato is pretty much the same as our Pontiac red potatoes. It's a early potato and we harvest them early because in the southern United States the weather gets so hot and humid they succumb to the heat and give up.

Oh my I can so relate to potato mash soup when those spuds are in the water cooking for just a minute to long while you are trying so desperately to catch up washing dishes before dinner time. I learned chitting last year, but a bit different. 3-6 days before planting cut seed potatoes into pieces with 1-2 eyes on each piece. Lay on a baking sheet in the oven, NO ON, label the tray, and allow cut side to dry thoroughly so it gets a ‘skin’ on it. This gives you more seed potato for the $.

Hiya Jessie! Snap! I’ve saved the Home Guard and British Queen seed potatoes from last years crop they did so well! Suspect the dig for victory aspect of the 1940s needed good reliable disease free stuff. Also saved some Charlotte as well. Couldn’t do without those. Can’t escape the chitting controversy though myself as they wouldn’t last any longer in storage. Keep well! Andy!

Hi Jess I am great believer in if it’s not broken then don’t mend it. We grow rocket. We have grown swift and Casablanca in the past but rocket has wonderful flavour look and size so why change it. Charlotte always dependable stores for months if you want them to. We don’t normally grow main crop we buy sacks from farmer but they have gone up to £10/ sack. They are picssso and a brilliant mashed roaster chipper and baker spud all rounder and we love them so we growing those as stanley says we should cos they getting very expensive. So watch this space👍

Hey Jess, potato, spuds and taters any name you give them. I tend to like the fingerlings red white inside and the Russian Banana potato these I love for grilling or roasting. I tend to grow the Red Norland large round and Russet brown potato as the two large varieties for baking, scalloping, mashing or whipping with lots of garlic.
I really would love to try the Maris Piper potato ever since I watched Jamie Oliver use them for making Fondant potatoes. I just use my own for that it comes out fine. I find that the catalogs want so much money I wait for them to show up at the garden centers to pick them out.
Do you grow sweet potatoes I do not think I remember you growing them but then I do not have the entire world memorized yet! Sweet potatoes are my next great passion as I can monkey around with them for several weeks before it is time to plant them.
Why is every channel in the UK having massive parsnips this year? ! Ok take care be safe bye for now.

So I watched your chilly sowing video and as you did I planted two of each variety and diligently labels them up. Popped them onto the super seven and away they went. Germination was fairly quick and I left them to grow on. It was only when I came to pot them on that I realised that the waterproof pen I used to label them wasn’t actually waterproof. I now have 28 lovely seedlings but absolutely no idea what type they are. Please tell me I’m not the only one who’s done this 😢

I chit my potatoes because it gives me something to do and I receive them in January (although I do request a February delivery) and last time I didn’t chit, they chitted badly anyway. My sweet peppers infuriated me last year, bad germination, greenfly magnet. This year I’ve got new seed, sown more varieties but less (2 of each) got a lot from sea spring seeds. Most seed companies recommend against using rain water for seeds. I know when I bought some protea seeds there guideline were to avoid rainwater at all costs due to pathogens in the water which can kill the seedlings. My grandad used to put any compost he was sowing seeds into, in the microwave to kill anything hidden in the soil. It’s a few weeks before I start seriously sowing my seeds.

Where did you get that racking system for your seedlings ?
Just have a small garden, but I'm counting the weeks until I can back doing things, sweet peas, marigolds, peas, runner beans, potatoes, herbs, etc...
The peppers last year did provide fruit, but there was no taste to them - so won't bother with them this year.

I grew Sarpo Mira last year Jane and have been disappointed with them. They are supposed to be excellent for roasting but I didn't find them so.

I've bought the kerr's pink too, I've never tried them before. Can I ask you what it means when it says hot pepper on a seed packet? Is it just chilli by another name? Or are they just not allowed to call it a chilli? Thank you.

Packets will state hot pepper or sweet peppers .there is also a nadepeno which is a jalapeño chilli without any heat but all the taste .
      So hot pepper has heat
