Changing of the Guard

The changing of the guard occurs every hour of the day outside the Parliament Building near Syntagma Square at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier.
The guards, Evzones, purposefully stamp their feet during the ceremony to let the dead know that the Greek nation is alive and free.
The Pom poms on their shoes symbolize the tree of liberty.
Their foustanella (kilt-like uniform) has 400 pleats. One pleat for every year of Ottoman occupation.
