  • Stanstead, Essex.
There is a huge pall of smoke and flames, a man answers the phone, a hand presses the alarm, the alarm bell rings - and it's action stations for fire fighters, who rush to get their gear from the rack, hats and jackets for an emergency. They rush off to the fire tenders. Lights flash and the engines come out of their garage area. One man is seen putting on his stuff while in the vehicle.
The men pull the hoses from the fire tenders and start to aim at the flames and the huge bank of smoke. This is a training exercise. Foam comes out of the hoses to put out the blaze of an aircraft on fire, a Lincoln Bomber. The fire-fighters move close amid flames and smoke. C/U of helmet with protection for face. A man is seen with burning trousers, stamping to put out the flames. The aircraft is almost covered in foam now. A fire-fighter uses a circular saw to cut through the metal. There is a shot of a watch on a wrist - time shows 4.45. The leaders at the Aviation Fire Training School are timekeeping the exercise - just 3 minutes.

Better foam, air blown, than the modern stuff. Stuck like s... To a shovel. Looks like an ex RAF Mk5 crash truck in use. Spent 23 years in the finest airfield fire and rescue services - the RAF, in the world.

Hi, thanks for putting this up. I joined in '67 and did my first basic course at the FSTS as you see here, It was a months course and then back again 6 months later for a more intence 2nd course on aircraft and equipement plus the latest in fire clothing etc. The rest of training took place at the airport where one was stationed. Every 4 yrs back for further updates and tactics as per the CAA-FAA and our licenses. A great life and a great bunch of lads to work with at Heathrow.
