Jonny, love your videos reviewing the albums of the bands I saw live in my twenties in Argentina! ... and the LPs I listened during my youth (I am 62 now) ... your Spanish its excellent. Sui Generis's album Vida was the very first album I ever bought when I was 13 years old ... how did you come across this old music from a very far away land? Take care.

    • @jonnykhatru
      @jonnykhatru  3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

Thanks for your comment, Alex! I would love to hear more about your experiences seeing these great bands live in their prime. Me, I've been a huge fan of prog rock since my teens and came across El jardin de los presentes by Invisible in my hunt for great classics. Shortly afterwards I met my wife who is Mexican. I began learning Spanish
and moved to Mexico a few years ago. I've been listening to all kinds of music in Spanish of course and a work colleague here in Mexico recommended Charly Garcia to me, so I listened to Instituciones by Sui Generis and Charly's Clics modernos, which I really enjoyed! So when I started to my TH-cam channel it made sense for me to continue listening to more from these great Argentine artists especially their work in prog rock, my favourite genre, although I love all kinds of music. I honestly didn't expect these videos to do as well as they have! But I'm really enjoying connecting with others who love this music. Saludos desde México! Hasta pronto ✌

      @@jonnykhatru Hi Jonny
      Thank you for your reply
Sui Generis was huge during my first year in high school in 1973, as you can imagine they were immensely popular with teenagers and we listen to their songs all the time so much so I was surprised to realise I still remember their lyrics today more than four decades later lol. These were bitter sweet times, the dictatorship repression was brutal and many of my classmates were arrested and made to 'disappear' never to be seen again.
Members of my family suffered similar fate unfortunately.
Sui Generis gave their farewell concert in 1975 at the Luna Park stadium before a very noisy crowd nevertheless I enjoyed it very much. It is always mind blowing seen your favourite band play live!
There was a follow up concert at the Grand Rex theatre shortly after of which I believe live footage was recorded and probably lives somewhere in TH-cam .
I saw Serugiran live in 1979 at the 'Obras Sanitarias Club' (Sanitary works club LOL) The club is commonly know as 'Obras' (Works')
      It was a great concert!
Shortly after I left Argentina for the last time never to come back, I emigrated to the USA, worked for several years in Canada and moved to London UK five years ago. Where are you originally from?
It's been a pleasure chatting with you, at your service, reach out anytime, Take care, Alex

    • @jonnykhatru

I have heard about the difficult situation in Argentina at the time, how awful. People have mentioned it in comments on my videos and I've read about it while reading about the music. Also there was a documentary on Netflix which I watched called Rompan todo, which is about the history of rock music in Latin America. It was not very in-depth, but it did mention the political context behind the music in Argentina through the eras, and did help me to understand a bit better. I'm really sorry for anyone you lost...
How incredible that you were present at such legendary concerts as the final show of Sui Generis! And I can imagine Seru Giran would have been very impressive in concert. I do know the joy of seeing your favourite band live, I was thrilled to see my beloved King Crimson in 2015 in London and 2019 here in Guadalajara. Unfortunately I haven't had the chance to see my other favourite band live, Genesis, but they are currently planning a tour this year, so it could still happen!
I am originally from Kent, which you probably know is South East of London, and I did live in London for a few years in my 20s as well. So you're living in London now? It seems we swapped continents! 😄 Thanks again, Alex! ✌

@@jonnykhatru the 'fab four' title seemed to me always to have suited better Sui Generis than Seru Giran (the only coincidence there is really the 4😀) because as a social and musical phenomenon I can't recall any other band apart from the Beatles and Sui G where basically almost every song (not just some hits) of their first two albums is a universally known classic (in Argentina I mean)
For people like me raised in the XX century Charly García IS Sui Generis, anything done after - specially his solo career - is like McCartney after The Beatles.

it's the first time I see that someone catches the irony of the song "la grasa de las capitales" (even here in Argentina it goes unnoticed) It's about progressive and jazzy rock as opposed to that kind of very basic dance music (which is ridiculed ¡¡dont stop dancing!!). Our rockers were very resistant to the whole culture of electronic music, especially in those years.

@@jonnykhatru I disagree with him haha, while charly's solo part is great if you liked the prog part and more focused on the atmospheric "Peperina" and "Bicicletas" are for you. In those albums and especially in two songs "Cinema Verite" and "Desarma y Sangra" both of the best of charly, emerges a sentimental and unique style characterized by that strange mixture of classical music, sometimes jazz, sung as if it were pop haha. Songs in the style of "Viernes 3 AM" from this album. Personally as a fan, those are the songs that made me highlight him as something different from what I've heard worldwide.

@Perreke augusto You can tell I'm more of a prog rock fan 😉 I think Bicicletas will be the next Charly Garcia album I check out since I did really love this one by Seru Giran. But I will get around to more of Charly's solo stuff too eventually because I do like new wave music too and Clics modernos was brilliant 👌 thanks for all the tips!

I'm sorry to tell you this but you've listened the album in the wrong order. It was a problem with the remasterization, and it's sad beacause it ruins most of the expirience and feelings that Seru was trasnmiting.
This is the original order of the songs:
    1) La Grasa de las Capitales
    2) San Francisco y El Lobo
    3) Parro Andaluz
    4) Frecuencia Modulada
    5) Paranoia y Soledad
    6) Noche de Perros
    7) Viernes, 3AM
    8) Los Sobrevivientes
    9) Canción de Hollywood

I did notice and I have since listened to it in the original order. I rather like the new order though, I like that Viernes 3AM comes earlier 😄 if I ever have the pleasure of owning it on vinyl though, it would be good to have the original order. Cheers!

the problem you have is that you don't understand the message, the content of the lyrics.

I did enjoy the album so why do you think there's a problem? And besides, I understand Spanish well. I live in Mexico. I don't concentrate on lyrics very much even in English though, especially not on first listen. I am more about the sound and feeling in the music. I have come to appreciate a lot of the lyrics on this album though, especially Viernes 3AM.
