    You knocked it out of the park, bro. Home run. The sound on that 12 string with the tuning is so rich that I'm jealous. I have a nice 6 string, but that beauty of yours, wow. The fingering was a bit more complex than I thought it would be. It's complex in standard tuning, and I thought it would be simple on the open tuning. Didn't look simple from here.

    • @8MinuteAxe

      Hey man! It's not too difficult. Getting the nuances of the rhythm is trickiest part. I watched Page and Plant play it live a few times and then I played along a couple of times until I really felt like I had it down. Even though I do the cuts in the video, they're for dramatic effect and to shorten the length. I did the entire song in a single take. I did leave out one tiny part. At the end of the second verse he goes up to chord he plays in the outtro once before he goes back down for the verse resolution. I used the two strongest verses rather and forgot about the small change. Just take your time with it. Carl Brown from guitar 365 has an excellent tutorial. I thought about doing my own (Carl is an excellent teacher but he doesn't really address the rhythm which I think is what most students are going to have the most trouble with). I may still. After I finish responding to all of the comments, I'm going to give the Takamine a restring and start working on a cool Beatles idea I have. Thanks again for your support! Very much appreciated! be well. -Mark

    • @8MinuteAxe
      @8MinuteAxe  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hey Doug. I responded to another one of your comments a little bit ago without seeing this one. What do you think of the Takamine? I put way too much time and effort into finding the best 12-string under $1000 and I really think this is it. The workmanship reminds me of a Gibson J series and the sound is huge, balanced, and exactly what I've been looking for. I'm going to change out the strings this evening and do a slight neck adjustment. The neck is a little thicker than I prefer but I'm sure if I lower the action just a bit, I'll be happy with it. The only 12-string acoustic I played with a thinner neck profile is actually the Mitchell that I've been borrowing from a student. And I don't think it's that much of a difference. It probably has more to do with the fact that I've gotten used to it....and I put at least 5 hours into getting it set up exactly where I like it. Anyway, I'd love to hear your thoughts on the guitar. Thanks so much for watching the video. I appreciate your time and your comment! -Mark

      @@8MinuteAxe Well I couldn't agree more with you. I had a J 200 that sadly I had to sell. I love maple in a guitar body for the tone and volume they produce. I confess, I bought my Takamine sight unseen (except for the photos on Sweetwater), and was very happy with the choice. It rings, it sings, it has plenty of volume and yes, it does remind me of my departed J200. I put on a set of Elixirs and to me it sounds exactly what I want in a 12 string. I tuned mine to this tuning and started re-learning Rain Song last night. It just sounds so amazing to my ears. I should probably get mine set up, but honestly, it seems to be just fine. If I can do a barre F on a guitar, then it's probably perfect. I can do it on this one. Beautiful flamed maple on the back as well. I love this guitar.

    • @8MinuteAxe
      @8MinuteAxe  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey Greg. You know, I already had the Mitchell tuned to open G and I started playing this thing on the Mitchell and I finally stopped being lazy, tuned up the Takamine....and I'm glad I did. It sounds so good. The video doesn't even do it justice. It's not too difficult to play. I put the tuning in the description. Be careful with that second string. Slow and easy or you're going to pop it. I remember playing this one when I was about 14 (I had been playing for about two years at that point, but I'm self taught so there wasn't a whole lot of progress) and the song wasn't too challenging but getting the guitar into an open tuning was an adventure. One of the things I've done over the past three years, is I try to learn a style I've never played before every six months or so. This really helps my teaching as well as expanding my playing. It allows me to remember first hand what it's like to work out the rudiments again. For instance, I took both of Tommy Emmanuel's finger picking courses last year with no prior experience and I literally started from scratch: playing E, A , B7 and getting my thumb independence down. I even did a video what at the time was a really challenging riff to play th-cam.com/video/ANXFMrTpbIo/w-d-xo.html. Give it a try. It will frustrate you at first but with a little practice, you'll get it. And it's fun!! Thanks again for all of your support. It really is appreciated Greg. -Mark

    • @zeppelinmexicano
      @zeppelinmexicano 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@dougww1ectebow yeh, that tuning on a 12 string would take me all day the way I used to snap the harmonic strings. I got lazy and learned to play it in standard tuning, but it don't be sounding as good as the open tuning. You just get a lot more resonance from open strings there.

    • @8MinuteAxe
      @8MinuteAxe  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey Doug. So, funny story. I'm not sure if you follow the channel but finding the right 12-string has been a bit of a saga for me. The Mitchell I play is on loan from one of my students. I bought a $300 Ibanez, used it for about 5 videos, and decided that the laminate top was too thin sounding. So I watched way too many videos and played way too many guitars and finally settled on the Takamine GJ72 (the one I'm playing here). In my previous Zep video, I used the Mitchell again because I didn't want to jack up the action on the Tak by changing the neck tension (I do Travelling Riverside Blues and That's the Way, both in open G) so when it came time to do the Rain Song, I almost went with the Mitchell again. I learned it and practiced on the Mitchell and finally, I'm like, this is ridiculous, I bought a beautiful new guitar and I'm not even using it! So I tuned up the Tak and POP! Yep, the lower B string went flying. Anyway, I tuned it up to pitch, let it sit for 6 hours so that I didn't have to keep tweaking when it came time to record. That's always been my reluctance to play the Rain Song. Now that I'm doing music full time again I play 5 or 6 of my guitars pretty regularly and I don't mind open tuning, drop D, or whatever it takes. Thanks so much for checking out the video. I appreciate your time and your comments. Take care and be well! -Mark

    • @8MinuteAxe
      @8MinuteAxe  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Very well put Jeremy. I included the Rick Rubin quote because it captures much of how I feel about it too. It's sad but doesn't make me sad. It's mysterious but the ending is so uplifting. Page is such a genius. I feel like he knew where he wanted to take us but he wanted us to end up feeling good so he added the ending. The ending was the only part that took a little practice on the 12-string. It's funny, I had the entire thing down on the first take...and then as I got to the outtro, I got in my head. I started thinking...ok, you've really nailed it, don't mess up the end. And then I choked out one note and half choked out another and I was like....F$&%&K! I listened to the playback and I thought that the spirit was there and a little mistake here and there isn't the end of the world. Hell, the Stones recorded the entire Exile on Main Street album without even tuning their guitars. And it may be their best!! Thanks so much for watching. I appreciate your time and your comment. Take care and be well. -Mark

    Great instrumental! Cant get enough og the 12 string stuff. I enjoyed the Zep factoids going by as you played, reminded me of watching "pop up video" on vh1 back in the day, but better - no dumb sound effect when they appeared : )

    • @8MinuteAxe
      @8MinuteAxe  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey Brett! I think three other people made the pop up video reference and the funny thing is that's exactly how the video started. Then I realized that I didn't zoom enough and I wanted to make sure that viewers who play were able to get a good look at my hands. Once the camera started moving, it didn't jive with all the little factoids I picked out. So I chose the 5 that I liked the best and added them in the second half of the video when I thought that some may be losing attention. I really appreciate your support man and I'm glad you enjoyed the video. And yes, the sound effect was the worst part of pop up video. Maybe I'll try that on an upcoming video. See how long it takes for another copyright claim. I wonder if pop up video slaps as fast as Eagles or Zeps lawyers. I say Zep's lawyers because I know Page isn't behind the tight control. At least I'd like to think it's not him. Take care. Have a great evening. -Mark

      @8MinuteAxe  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey Wezley. It's really not much harder on the 12 string. The little repeating arpeggio he does is maybe a bit more challenging and there are a couple of spots where I'm intentionally trying not to ring out both strings in the string set but overall the 12-strings all add to the mix. Thankfully, I didn't have anyone give me an earful about ....who do I think I am trying to question the original. LOL. Two people wrote that about one of the songs (I forget which one). As if that's what I'm implying. Some of these tunes just sound really nice on the 12. Thanks again for your support of the channel. Very much appreciated. Take care and be well. -Mark

      I use dadgad a decent amount on the 12. The Mitchell is always in some kind of open tuning. I'm doing a collaboration with a viewer this weekend. He recorded a sparse version of Wild Horses with vox and standard guitar. I'm gonna add the 12 in open G and try to emulate a Nashville tuned guitar on top as well. I appreciate the dialog. I've learned so much about the 12 string from everyone's input. I'm going to start doing some live streams soon. I'll have s theme and a lesson planned but I'm hoping that a lot of the regulars will add to it. It would be great if you could join us. I'll give you a heads up beforehand. Probably in a couple weeks. Take care. -Mark

      Hey Lowell. Yes sir! I think so. It sounds amazing, stays in tune incredibly well, and looks incredible. I did so much work on getting the action on the borrowed Mitchell down that the Mitchell actually plays a tad better than the Takamine right now. I'm going to change the strings tonight and do a slight neck adjustment and see if I can get the action just a little lower. I really appreciate you watching the video and for your support of the channel. Tonight I'm going to start working on my most ambitious video yet: a Beatles medley that covers their entire career. I haven't decided if I'm going to go year by year or record by record. I guess it depends on whether or not I get lazy. Take care my friend. -Mark

      Thanks so much. I've thought about doing a more personal video but I don't want to come across as self important or give the slightest idea that I'm any better than anyone else. I'd really like to start doing live streams with a group of us, sharing ideas. I figure I could lead the discussion but let it goes where it may. Another viewer mentioned a lesson on the Rain Song. I'm thinking about doing that as a live stream. I'm working on what I think is a really cool Beatles video and then I'm going to do a duet with another viewer on a Stones tune. Maybe after I can get things together and do a live stream. Getting back to the personal stuff, my intention with my video right before this one NEVER GET A BAD GUITAR GIFT AGAIN th-cam.com/video/0AbqvjdCZwA/w-d-xo.html was to give people an idea of my sense of humor. Rather than making it lean I intentionally let the camera roll a little in sections to show my mannerisms. I know that I'd like to get to know my favorite YTers a little better so I totally understand where you're coming from...and very, very humbled. I also did a video retelling many of the dumb things I've done over the years at gigs. You may enjoy it NEVER DO THESE THINGS AT A GIG! th-cam.com/video/DhHhwKxTtg0/w-d-xo.html. And I actually shot a video that was supposed to be a complete behind the scenes tour, I tested it with a few friends and they gave me the thumbs down. I actually used about 1 minute of the idea in my Norwegian Wood cover th-cam.com/video/BwC3ORfYXKg/w-d-xo.html. If you have time, let me know what you think of this one. You'll get the idea of where I was going I think. Regardless of any of this, I do very much appreciate your support of the channel. People have written to me about how they can't believe I only have 1000, or 2000, or 3000 subs, but I can honestly say that I'm grateful, very grateful to every single person who watches. Take care. Hey Carter. Yes sir. I've seen it and it's awesome. Hendrix on a 12-string is definitely coming soon. The more I play the 12-string, the more comfortable I get with it. Finger picking is no longer an issue and I even take a solo now and then. I actually uploaded a video where I do a solo on the 12-string. I was really excited to do the video. It's such an easy way to literally instantly improve soloing on electric, 6, or 12...but no one was interested. I even changed the title a few times (something I rarely do) but not many takers. Check it out if you have time. I think you'll get something out of it and again I do a 12-string solo at the end BEGINNER SOLO TIPS (IMPROVE INSTANTLY) th-cam.com/video/gLC4aeISGo8/w-d-xo.html. Mark, fantastic job on this and would love to see its tab (as well as the one for That’s the Way in open G). Good advice on raising the B string to pitch in this tuning for Rain Song, such a great choice on the 12.

    • @8MinuteAxe
      @8MinuteAxe  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks so much Robert. There are a few different versions but this is definitely how Page did it. I read a story where he was in open G and said what happens if I tune to a sus chord. and voila! I actually did pop a string on the new guitar. As a matter of fact I just popped a damn G on the Takamine. I'm restringing the thing. It amazes me to hear about guys that can keep strings on for months. I have to change strings all the time. I sweat a decent amount and I'm notorious for moving from guitar to guitar without wiping. I even have cleaning cloths laying all around the studio. When I'm teaching I may move from the tele to the LP in back to back lessons and the last thing I'm thinking about is wiping down strings. Carl Brown from guitar 365 does an excellent lesson on this one. Carl is an amazing teacher and a great player. I may upload my own lesson based more on the rhythmic elements of the song. It's not complicated but it's not straight up either. For beginners and early intermediate players, I don't think they'll find the rhythm intuitive. Unless of course they are among the handful of my students who actually listen to me when I say USE THE DAMN METRONOME. ITS THE MOST IMPORTANT THING YOU CAN DO. IT WILL MAKE YOU GREAT AND DEFINITELY IN DEMAND. But, eh, very few take my advice. Hell, I didn't take my advice for 10 years. I'm going to try to get to the tab on the weekend. I just started a new Beatles video that I'm excited about and them I'm actually doing a collaboration with a viewer. I'm hoping to make it a regular thing. Take care. Thanks again. -Mark

      Thanks so much Dan. You reminded me of one of my greatest disappointments. Many years ago, I bought a well maintained B3 on ebay for $1100. I rented a truck and got two of my friends to help me move it. It was paid for and the seller gave me his address. When I got there, he refused to open the door (we could hear the family inside). He ultimately gave me my money back and sold it to someone else a few months later for $4000. LOL. That was back in CT. I'm sure the thing wouldn't have ever made the trip to Atlanta where I currently live, but I still think about how awesome it would have been to have one. It was complete with working Leslies, nothing dried out (at least according to the description). As far as the Tak goes, I love the sound. I've since switched to the Taylor as my primary 12 as it's easier to play but I still use the Tak a lot when a tune calls for a true blue full 12. Have a great day and thanks so much for checking out the video. -Mark

    • @8MinuteAxe
      @8MinuteAxe  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey Joe. You know, someone made a comment recently about the blocking and I think there's a lot of truth to it. A lot of the older musicians still have old managers. Old managers who are old school as well. Rather than adapting to the times and understanding that the cat's out of the bag and they are only hurting themselves by doing all of this blocking they hold on for dear life. Like MZ says, I can't imagine Jimmy is personally responsible, nor does he care about limiting the use of the content if it's done in a reverent way, but the company protects Zep hardcore. Eagles and Zep both filed copyright claims immediately on all of my videos. Here's something. I haven't monetized. I've been offered it by youtube (you have to have 1000 subs and 5000 watch hours) but I don't want you guys to have to sit through ads so that I can make $50 a week. When it becomes more sustainable and I can pay my bills and feed my family, I may reconsider. So anyway, if you're watching one of my videos and you see ads, you'll know that the it's been claimed. I'm really glad you enjoyed this one as much as I did. I'm gonna eat some dinner, restring the Takamine, and then start what I hope is a really cool new Beatles video. Take care. talk soon. -Mark

It sounded great for the money but just not the sound I was looking for. I didn't find a whole lot of difference in sound quality as I moved up from $300 to $500. Maybe the Guild. You can probably get entry level Martin 12 used for around $450ish but I wasn't that impressed with it. One of the viewers just gave me a rave review of the D'Angelico. I believe that one is around $450-$500. You may want to check that one out. If that's more than you want to spend I would be patient and try to find something used. I would imagine FB marketplace in the city would have just about anything on the planet that you'd be looking for? Anyway, thanks so much for checking it out. The Ibanez I returned, the new Takamine, the borrowed Mitchell, and my friend came over with his electric Danno. It was hard enough to plunk down $700 on the GJ72, I mean the guitar is a steal but it's still a 12-string and even as much as I play it I would have liked to appropriate my funds elsewhere. Like a new guitar with p90s. Anyway, thanks so much for checking it out. Did you catch my other open tuning Zep video? LED ZEPPELIN PLAYED ON A 12-STRING th-cam.com/video/E8ZUO4W15Jk/w-d-xo.html. Notice in that one I was too lazy to even tune up the brand new guitar. I left the Mitchell in open tuning. Thanks so much for watching the video. I really appreciate your time and your comment made me laugh. Take care. Have a great evening. -Mark

    Nice guitar work! It’s maybe my least favorite song on the album though - surely in the bottom 3.

      Least favorite. What do you put below it on Houses? Dy'er Maker? The Ocean? The Crunge? Dancing Days? I would say it's my second favorite after No Quarter.

    Well done, but slow it down a bit. The tuning I learned for this was DGCGCD.

      Hey Doug. Yep, that's the tuning I used. I played it about 4 bpm faster just so it didn't drag. Thanks so much for checking it out. I am grateful for your time and constructive feedback. Take care and have a great weekend. Mark.

    Good version. I will always associate the song with the medieval fantasy sequence with Robert Plant in the “Song Remains the Same” concert film which is where I heard it first. 411

    Great version Mark! A little less "up-stroke" than the studio version gives it an alternate vibe.

      The guy who taught me to play it played it like that at somebody's wedding. I thought that must have been a cool wedding. But there is a blend of feelings in this song and it amazes me that it seems to fit a variety of situations like weddings, even funerals, and seemingly anything but a birthday. You know, birthdays are happy face time, the time for the B52s or Bob Marley.

      Hey Andy. I really appreciate it. MZs comment is interesting. I included the Rick Rubin quote because I thought it really captured how I feel about the song. It really is without comparison, at least as far as anything I can come up with. It's happy and strong and melancholy and moody. MZ, as far as B52s, I live in ATL my friend. And they love their local bands here. I've heard enough B52s, Drivin and Cryin, and REM to last me a lifetime!! Thanks so much for watching Andy. Have a great evening. -Mark

      Hey Greg. Carl Brown from guitar 365 does an excellent lesson on this. He's a great player and an even better teacher. I'm thinking about doing a video lesson anyway, however, focusing more on the rhythmic structure. I've been playing in bands for 30 years and I've been lucky enough to play with drummers and bass players who demanded great timing. That being said, probably half of the let's say 2000 shows I've done over the years have been solo acoustic, where I've been able to take as many liberties as I've wanted with timing. I guess the result is that I have pretty good time. Page is very deliberate in the way he executes this song, as he is with everything else he does. People see the aloof rock star persona and forget what a perfectionist he is. This song demands a pretty solid feel in order to get it to sound good (just my opinion as is everything I say. LOL). If you want to check out Carl's video, get the chords down and then I'd be happy to go over the feel with you. Email me and we can set up a skype if you'd like. Even better would be if you can drum up a few people or anyone reading this, and I'll do a live stream lesson. I haven't done any live streams yet but I would love to start doing some. If you want to connect with other viewers on here or you have friends that want to do it, it would be fun. Either way, shoot me an email and I'd be happy to assist in any way I can. All the best. -Mark

      Hey man. Yes it is. I put in in the description but it's DGCDCD. If you shoot me an email at markaranalli@gmail.com I'll send you the tab. Don't worry, it's 100% free. I don't have anything I'm selling and I don't have an annoying mailing list. No catches. Just free. It would be great if you'd subscribe and ring the bell but I'll send you the tab either way. I really appreciate you taking the time to check out the video. Have a great evening and take care. -Mark

    This is indeed a weird tuning, because this is the only version with the "G" string tuned to D instead of G. I broke the high G string on my 12 string trying to figure it out. All the other tutorials have it as G. All the tabs list it as G. But this tutorial lists it as D. Is it D or G?
