If I may, what Akechi says to Joker in game doesn't mean "Give up on me and let me die". What he's saying is "I'd rather be dead than live under someone's say-so". Akechi didn't want to die. He just doesn't want to live as a pawn, like he did for Shido or Maruki. Akechi would rather die on his feet than live on his knees

When you really think about it, Akechi truly was the only person that Akira could trust during this arc. Which is ironic considering their history of betrayal. Joker was betrayed in this arc. Betrayed by Maruki, for creating this world. Betrayed by Kasumi, who couldn't live as Sumire. And worst of all, betrayed by the Phantom Thieves, who had forsaken their oath so they could live their happily ever afters. Akechi, for all his faults, for all the evil things he's done, was the only one who didn't betray Joker. The only one who willingly rejected the lie and stayed true to himself. Spoilers: Very late vanilla end game stuff, as well as a detail right before 3rd Semester talked about. . . . . . Emotions are very fickle... Akechi saved Ren/Akira's (Akiren, if you're so inclined) life two times in a very short span of time. The first time being after "Crow" and "Joker"'s final fight, where Crow made himself go berserk. Akechi poured his heart out about how he doesn't understand why Ren has such a great group of friends, but is cornered by Shido's cognition of him. Instead of letting a very worn out Joker and Co. attempt to fight the cognition, Akechi shoots the button that raises the bulkhead, locking Akechi in with Shido's Cognition. In the original game, the two Akechi's have a stand-off, and end up killing each other. In fact, from what I remember, they do in Royal as well. Akechi felt that there was some tangible debt that needed to be settled to Ren. When he was 'resurrected' on Christmas Eve, however, he saved Joker's life again. Joker was thinking of giving himself up in order to fully lock down Shido and get him convicted. No doubt in his mind that he himself would be imprisoned as well, though... But Akechi shows up, instead throwing himself to the wolves so that AkiRen would stay a free bird. I know this part is quite a bit of head-canon here... but to me, Akechi and AkiRen aren't that different. They're both "Wild Cards". One could even call them both Tricksters. They both had their lives stolen away by Shido, but forged new ones in different ways then their pasts. Perhaps AkiRen can see that, and senses such similarities... and how he doesn't want to lose someone again, just like how he thought he lost Morgana on Christmas Eve. True, it would be "karmic retribution" to say that Akechi should stay dead... For him to pay for his crimes in the afterlife. But the Phantom Thieves as a whole are teens. Sure, teens with amazing senses of justice (save the obvious outlier), but teens nonetheless. Teenagers form bonds rather quickly, and I feel that, even with Akechi betraying him, AkiRen would see Akechi as a comrade in arms. One of his teammates, someone he has to make sure sees the next day. After all, a leader makes sure everyone comes home.
